I spent my childhood in the countryside of Finland. We had a huge wild garden. I loved animals, saw lots of them around. I liked raccoon dogs, but I never saw even one, even though I really wanted to. Then, when I was 20, my parents had to move out of the house into a city. It was emotional, saying the final goodbye to my old childhood home and all the places around it, filled with memories. I spent the last night there, and woke up into the last morning in the old house. A beautiful bright midsummer morning. I went into the living room and looked out of the window into the back yard.... and there was a raccoon dog there. Just casually going about its business. I had never known there were raccoon dogs in the area. It felt like a gift, a parting gift.

To be honest, I wonder why Tanuki are not extinct. Tanuki have a characteristic of stiffening up when startled, and are often hit by cars. They also care for their partners so much that they will not try to have children if their partner dies. If their partner gets hit by a car and dies, they will go there frequently and eventually get hit by a car and die just like their partner. They do not have weapons such as sharp claws, fangs, or great strength. They are quiet and timid in nature. They do not try to attack people. Perhaps the reason why they are not extinct is because they are not tasty and have charming looking.

Despite being the subject of legend, they're hardly understood or thoroughly studied or even cared for in Japan. What we actually know of their social habits is the fact they're monogamous lovers that mate for life (often birthing 3-4 generations in their lifetime); and how multiple families share a singular feces pile that allows them to exchange information on food quality/quantity and available sources/types in their habitat. After the introduction of Procyon lotor (true Raccoons) to Japan in the 80's, the overlapping niche has caused the raccoon dog's habitats to be contested; and with a more aggressive opponent the raccoon dogs are very slowly being pushed into endangerment.

In Japanese Folklore tanuki had such massive balls they would sling them over their backs to carry them. Gaara from Naruto, being the jinchuriki of a tanuki, shares many physical traits with them such as the dark marks around his eyes and his gourd (which is shaped like like a ball sack). I can't believe you mentioned the Tanuki suit but not Tom Nook, arguably better known than the Tanuki suit. (Even though Mario is obviously much better known than Animal Crossing, the Tanuki suit is one of the lesser known items in comparison to things like the Fireflower or Super Mushroom, while Tom Nook is arguably the most major character in the Animal Crossing series apart from the player character). Tom Nook is a Tanuki from the Animal Crossing series. The English version calls him a raccoon, but he's actually a Tanuki, in fact, the name Tom Nook is a pun on Tanuki. He is one of the main characters of the series as the character you buy a home from, and a major part of the Animal Crossing games is paying off your debt to him. However, he doesn't charge interest and lets you pay at your own pace. He has two young apprentices named Timmy and Tommy that are also Tanuki and they are just the cutest little bbys

The reason that certain parts of their anatomy have become such a...big deal in folk lore is due to old medal working techniques. Their pelts were used by smiths when hammering out metal in order to reduce dents and tool marks on the metal. They would lay the pelt on the metal and hammer away with the pelt in the middle as a buffer. Over time certain parts of the pelt would get flattened and stretch to sometimes comical proportions. This led to the legendary status of their boy bits.

If you have trouble telling one from the other, just notice that raccoon may stand in two legs, hold the food and climb, while the tanukis are just like your regular dog.
