Looking back at it, Skullface was the deepest MGS antagonist. He was both cartoonish (agent of chaos who wants to justify anarchy) and non-cartoonish (the torture of chico, the rape of paz, the disregard for the consequences of war to further his power). Him being written as someone whose interpretation of the Boss' will is based on the hatred of the language of the most successful colonizers is both brilliant and brave on Kojima's part as an artist who pushes message across through his medium of choice. MGSV wasn't perfect but it really pushed all the boundaries. It saddens me that Konami couldn't see how much of the groundwork Kojima did (his refinements in direction in writing, the impressive power of the FOX engine) could have made Konami into a pioneer in the upcoming future of video games. It saddens me that all of us fans deal with this phantom pain That being said...Death Stranding next, Max? :D

I think all of the shit that happened around this game, it was supposed to happen. Like it's a closely guarded secret, and making it set off ALL alarms. However, if you haven't figured it out for yourself? Luckily we all know and sought the guidance of an obsessive autistic philosophical investigator named Max Derrat.

Playing through it again, I really appreciate how dark the tone is. There’s a strong feeling of impending doom over the whole story, and pretty much every character will be dead by the end of the saga - the real tragedy though is that many won’t know the truth, like the full extent of Skull Face’s duplicity, Zero being unable to reconcile his mistakes, and the fact that half of Big Boss’ legend isn’t even his own. I think it’s a good story when you step away from it.

That's how I felt. I played thru it raw, didn't see anything about it until after... I felt like I didn't even start playing the game until chapter 2, where all the plot holes and lies started making sense. But when you got to the mirror and midre starts playing, the tears came instantly. I has believed the masked man was a figment of our imagination like ocelot said, that subversion being overturned 130 hrs later to suppling us, the fans as the real legend of big boss, is priceless. This game was underated, players weren't ready for a game series that took itself so seriously and delivered in ways we can't even imagine. I always hoped tho that thered be a 6 where the character big boss comes back to defeat us as venom, to save us from the unending war we wage to keep him anonymous.

A lot of people were disappointed that they didn’t see Big Boss’ big fall. But Venom Snake’s very existence was that fall. He allowed Venom Snake to be used as his tool and puppet, not unlike how the Government used the Boss in such a way that Big Boss despised. He could’ve told Venom the truth as soon as they’d escaped and let him choose whether to willingly pretend to be Big Boss but he left it until what was probably the last possible moment to be straight with him, and even then he didn’t really give the medic a choice to stop.

the problem really is chronology. you see big boss' fall in the first metal gear games; the ones before MGS1. this introduction of venom snake was necessary to reach some resolution without this entire game just being "big boss goes from honoring the boss' will to becoming a maniac" (which to be fair could've been interesting, but wouldn't feel that great to play). although that still happens (in the background, and moreso covered by peace walker). its hard to write a story like this with so much lore already being pre-established

What I like about the cutscene of Venom realizing his identity is that when he punches the mirror, it's his only act of giving into revenge. He let's his pent-up emotions all out with one final punch towards not his own reflection but that of Big Boss. And right afterward, he walks away into the shadows, into the final boss of Metal Gear 1, to fulfill his duty for Big Boss and accept his fate.

It's the end of an era, but it had to end eventually. Not even a series this big can last forever, but it leaves an impression unlike anything else. Pretty crazy how Kojima had no interest in developing more MGS games after 2, and he didn't seem too thrilled about leading that project. But, he kept at it regardless, and it all led to this game, MGS V. The ending always gets me when Venom's dialogue is also speaking to the audience, and it's basically Kojima giving a heartfelt thanks. I'm really love how it ended on such a great note as far as his perspective on the series and the game being awesome despite the madness behind the scenes. Appreciate this vid, you did it justice my good man.

Regarding Skullface's plan to give everyone nukes. If he views peace as the absence of war he knows even one madman pushing the button led to humanity's extinction, peace would be achieved either way because the fighting would and we weren't worth saving anyway.

A little bit late, but here are some things that I wanted to elaborate on with some of the points you made: 1. In regards to why Paz would be captured and tortured at a Cypher facility, wasn't it implied that Skull Face had gone rogue by then? Given that he still has control of XOF during the events of Phantom Pain, he still had a great deal of control over some portions of Cypher before his assassination attempt on Zero. He tortured Paz so that he can find Zero's location. 2. I'm glad that you brought up the ambiguity with Huey's involvement with what happened with MSF and DD. While you did bring up a good point with how Chico could have told Skull Face about MSF's location, it's important to bear in mind that Huey was going behind Big Boss's back way before Chico ran away from MSF to find Paz. Huey went out of his way to invite the IAEA to Mother Base even when both Big Boss and Kaz agreed to not meet their demands for an inspection. Since the inspection happened so soon after Chico's message was received, it makes no sense that Skull Face could possibly somehow man a large-scale ambush that quickly, while also knowing that Big Boss would come for Chico. The fact that Huey alone was taken away by XOF during the attack, and most damning of all, the fact that Strangelove had left Mother Base so soon before the actual XOF attack shows that a lot of what happened was premediated. I personally feel that Skull Face had planned the attack on Mother Base for a long time now, and Paz's capture and subsequent reveal of Zero's location was the nail in the coffin. That, and Huey's actions in Chapter 2 which were definitely proven to be true by Kaz, only help reinforce the fact that Huey was a genuine villain. It also helps contextualize his eventual suicide with Ocelot's dialogue about him in the end. Personally, I think the more important person to discuss in this video should have been Kaz instead. Huey was easily shown to be a garbage human being, Quiet's story showed a story of redemption and love, and Liquid's/Psycho-Mantis's story helped contextualize his hatred for his father and his plans for revenge in MS1. While the game does leave the tiniest bit of doubt for Huey and whether he was guilty or not, Kaz feels the most suspicious. Huey was technically correct during his torture in that Kaz WAS an agent of Cypher aka Zero during the events of Peace Walker. He also worked with Zero again after the attack on Mother Base to protect and watch over Big Boss during his coma. While I don't think his desire for revenge was fake, I feel that his revenge was focused mainly on Skull Face and the Cypher organization he partially controls. Not to mention how Kaz might have been supported by Zero the same way he did in PW by financing DD and providing them the money and means to deal with Skull Face and support Venom. It would explain why Big Boss decided to leave him and DD/MSF behind after the attack, why Ocelot assassinates Miller before MGS1, and why Ocelot subtly guides and manipulates solid snake throughout the series. Even if you end our discussion of Metal Gear with this video, I do hope you can discuss a little bit about Kaz's motivations throughout the series.

But so many things could've been done. 4th wall breaking things, survival mechanics in the open world where getting spotted and injured would be a problem, having to find food to heal (like in MGS3) would be cool, etc. Having Venom Snake be in different big strange situations, maybe with Mantis, etc. Just a field for so many opportunities.

That was beautiful Max. There’s something really special about iconic bad ass special agents/super soldiers who make the impossible seem possible. We watched Solid Snake grow and become the good hearted hero that he has created to be, and Big Boss also live long and realize that fighting the world is pointless because you only ended up losing yourself and everything that truly matters to you in the end. Then we also recently had James Bond finally find a reason to fight, die, and live on that truly mattered to him after all the pain, betrayals, heartache and loss that he had experienced in his long action packed journey. Heroic bad ass Iconic Legends who saved the world against ruthless evil people time and time again and inspired vast generations of men in the process. “Heroes never truly die, their legend lives on forever”.

As I was listening to this video and before you mentioned the word that would describe the whole series, I had the exact same though of the word "will". Everything in this series makes you question what, if anything, are you willing to fight for and why. And I think in each game ending but especially in the 4rth that ethos is very well summarized. It's not about enforcing you change on the world and others, but instead to respect others will while fighting for your own. So many parts of this game in that sense remind me of the matrix and the oracle. Memorable bits where the context of the world and the context of the authors morality and narrative align in a moment to give you as truthful an insight as they believe in. I'm a huge fan of a lot of your videos and I work as an artist in this entertainment industry. I think people like you are now, more than ever, necessary in the trenches of video game creation and experiences. I would love to one day see that happen!

This is deep, I actually cried a little for Venom. I felt the pain, the agony, and the hurt he must have felt. I genuinely struggled within myself as I found myself defending the actions of Big Boss, then denying that Big Boss would do that to a comrade like Venom, hating Big Boss and wanting to be better, to actually accepting it all and not wearing my avatar face in the game thinking that I should fulfill my duty and not break my disguise so my mission to Big Boss is fulfilled. Venom Snake sacrificed everything for Big Boss, willingly, and Big Boss cared for him. Big Boss wanted to see his face one last time before they changed it, was worried about him potentially not being able to carry the name... This game is amazing.

The way I saw or how I played MGSV was that the Boss (Venom) was himself during the game, a Medic, a helper, a loyal soldier. Even though Naked's image was upfront the choices made by Venom was his own, the guy even kept pictures of his soldiers, the love of his life, took memories of building Mother Base because he wanted to. Instead of turning the children into soldiers, he just let them do basic jobs, let them be educated, a chance for a normal life would Naked do this? The guy even love his soldiers because he even turned them into ash and brought them to his missions, Venom could have easily killed Huey, Quiet, and Skull Face even but no, Venom to the core had the will to keep on keeping on and chose to be the Phantom because Big Boss knew he is the best among all of them and Venom trusted Big Boss the same.

I really wish MGSV had the structure of the first 4 MGS games. Burying so much of the story in audio tapes is a huge bummer for me. I've personally always enjoyed the big flashy cutscenes.

Idk, I felt I got most of the story from the mission breifing and dialouge. Every scene eith skull faced got watch tho, almost nuerotically. I was randomly shouting "REVENGE!" at work for a few days ngl... good times.

Something I think that is fitting with skull face is that with his lack of identity taking on the persona of a phantom, he has the biggest revenge on the world by causing much of the conflicts in the series such as crippling Zero making it impossible for him to give him the possibility of making amends with Big Boss, destroying the original MSF pushing Big Boss to create a doppelgänger who would create the blue print for the war economy. Yet in the end he isn’t mentioned in any of the metal gears (obviously cuz of retconning) but it’s similar to Monster’s Johan, and to someone like Skull Face he would welcome this.

so well explained, and brings the story to such depth... however how deep does one have to look to get this information... Its too deep sometimes for me. Still amazing. Thanks for the video.

I personally think metal gear solid 5's story was great. To me it really conveyed the confusion and secrecy of the world and its characters. Really feels like you're being deceived and used by allies and enemies. Made to think you're a hero making actual change to the world

A fascinating video essay, as always. Still, I hope you were bluffing when you said this will be your last MGS video. So much is still left to explore. Just of the top of my head, how about more musings on... * considering ideas as being alive just as much as any organism is (think of Dawkins' conception of memes as the cultural equivalent of genes) * Nietzschean philosophy, in particular his notion of the 'death of God' (meaning: the end of metaphysics) and the necessity for the new man (Übermensch) to overcome nihilism by creating new values. * the coming of superhuman AI in the form of the Singularity * the cyclical nature of history and politics * the concept of negativity and how it appears throughout the MGS saga, i.e.: people with no name, no background, no nation... the dread of nothingness that awaits when you realize that you've build your identity on a pipe dream Forgive me if you've already covered any of these in great length. I'm just here to encourage you to keep sending your thoughts into the world.

MGS on PS1 spoiled me, It made me expect more from video games. MG3 amped up those expectations. Playing that game gave me the same feelings that watching T2 and Jurassic Park in theaters as a 12yr old boy gave me. It's absolutely my favorite all time game.

A bit late to this but what burned me the most were the implications of the plot twist within the series itself. I get where Kojima was coming from. Making the player a part of big bosses legend. At the same time we're the body double of big boss the same guy who is forced to sacrifice himself for big boss during Zanzibar.
@Scamalasaurus

I've followed Kojima for over 20 years now. The man, at many points in history would have been put to death for what he sees. Ask yourself "What is a greater threat? A virus or what the errant mess of human communication and modern connectedness makes of it and the reactions that are provoked because of that?" Now, look at what the world is now and then know that he was working on this and being stifled at every corner a good 7 years before you ever even heard of COVID. This man envisioned what the smart phone would do back when flip phones were the coolest thing, KZbin was an infant and Facebook didn't exist. If you don't understand, then that's ok but shove the ego aside and respect and learn because his true legacy is to teach and there is great value in the mystery that is Hideo Kojima.

i can't believe i'm saying this, but this video made me realize that mgsv is really personal to me. i struggle with revenge and race, with both are intertwined. i was bullied a lot because i wasn't as athletic due to my horrible asthma and/or "manly" (whatever their definition of masculinity was, i wasn't that). it was at this time that i encountered metal gear saga, starting with mgs3. since then i always had revenge in my mind on those that made me suffer things. it helped me persevere through hard times, be it college, work, or being an active person overall. but it is destructive and self-fulfilling. i started fantasizing about their downfall. it took a toll on me and my mind. i'm anxious all the time and i might have some sort of mental illness (i'm thinking of going to a therapist to give my condition a name, but not right now). worst of all, i'm angry at almost everything. i'm angry at them, at the world for making them doing such terrible things at me, and at myself for not strong enough to struggle. holding on to revenge is like holding on to a hot burning coal in a intense blizzard. your hands are burning and it hurts, yet you have to do it to keep yourself warm. now that i'm days away from turning 25 years old, i have no desire to exact revenge. i'm tired. it's time for me to let it go, and to let the world be. i don't know if i can forgive them and myself, yet i know i'm willing to let the anger go. but what remains is this empty void of excess hate that i'm not sure what to do with it. now that i let go of the burning coal, all i have now is a burned hand. it hurts me, like a phantom pain. i hope i have the power, will, and the strength of character to keep going on and just live. this profile picture of otacon from mgs2 that i use is the symbol of that hope. i really hope the best is yet to come. thank you for the great retrospective series on metal gear saga, and for all the other quality videos that you made (my personal favorites being your take on heart of darkness, shadow of the colossus, and silent hill). your videos have helped me appreciate video game as a storytelling medium and, to a degree, myself. here's to you, max!

Congratulations on finishing the series! I had been looking forward to this video for a while, and a great way to close the chapter of this book That being said, if I may, I think there are a few things I would've done differently. I feel like the topic of "RACE" wasn't covered enough. With a game that took place in Afghanistan and Angola/Zaire, the theme is very prevalent and shows some of the worst sins that man can commit, and can also reflect how it reflects the world. Maybe it could've been two separate 60 min videos, Pt 1 and 2, but I don't know what your situation is like, and I trust you when you say that you don't have the proper resources available Still, it was a great ending of the retrospective series and I look forward to watching more of your analysis videos in the future! Take care!

I know we'd be missing out on a ton of the game if we opted to kill Quiet, but it does raise the question, if she is the reason the base gets infected, then what happens if she isn't there to make that happen? Also there is a point where the game taunts the idea of extracting The Man on Fire, say we did, what would happen? Personally for Huey, I never liked him. I never got far enough to where I learned how evil he was. But it felt way too obvious even tho I had never played Peacewalker or Ground Zeroes yet. The cowardice, the unrealistic levels of "woe is me" radiating from him, the fact that he claims innocence despite all the evidence contrary, everything about him screamed that he is guilty, but he'd rather play the victim even tho he knows he is far from being a victim. Now after seeing it, now I'm left with wondering how the bloody hell he survived at all as it was very clear that he was hated by both sides. Plus the nerve of him, asking for help from people he betrayed twice. Ironically, the ones who deserved the title of victim more than Huey were Kaz, Snake, and Skull Face.
