😵Great stuff Matt! What I find interesting is that if you were trying to win a world major marathon, that's exactly the level of effort you would want at the start. You wouldn't mind running low on glycogen at two hours because you'd be within sight of the finish line. As it happened, you might have been off by just a handful of watts and holding back a bit on the big downhill would have made a difference as you noted, but you gave yourself a chance for a breakthrough day and came away with some data that tells a story. As for me, no serious challenges to report for my week. I matched previous one with 41.5 miles again, this time with a speed workout on Wednesday that seems promising and an 11 mile long run on Saturday. Thanks for the interesting deep dive!🤿

🥵 When I saw your graph I thought you bonked and then you said it so 100% in agreeance. Pace down, HR down & trying your hardest is a bonk. As for me I had my 1st 50km trail Ultra in NZ 5:05:04 came 6 in age 50-59 and I'm 59.3 years old. I was aiming for 6hrs mainly Because I was worried about my hip issues I've been having but I have to say I'm now recovered from that. Didn't feel it and didn't feel it 48 hours later. 3 days on still DOMs in calves and quads. When I check my graph out my HR was at the highest at the finished. I had 4 Gels, 2 small bananas and a OSM bar. 1.5litres of Tailwind.

Yeah, there's no doubt it was a textbook bonk! Oh well! Wow! You really came through on your 50k! Absolutely phenomenal racing and WAY under your goal! I'm so glad your hip was fine. I'm sure it was scary to test the hip with such a long event, but it came through and now you can be 100% sure you're healed. Enjoy your recovery time! You earned it!

Great vid. There must be different categories of Bonking. Your slow down looks gradual and your heart rate corresponded well to the easing of the pace. One year, I did a marathon way undertrained. I had no business running it. Of course, I bonked but even with the slowing of my pace my heart just kept pumping too fast the last few miles. I think when you run out of fuel and your body tries to inefficiently burn fat instead it can expose how well or how poorly your aerobic base training is. That must explain why some can run all the way home to the finish line and others can barely lift a leg after a bonk. 😵
@its_Matt_B_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you’re probably right about the different kinds of bonking. I haven’t heard of the differences but it makes sense it would present differently depending on circumstances. It just felt like I was out of energy and my legs felt like lead.

😵 I appreciate the detailed analysis ... and especially how a veteran racer can miscalculate. Stryd's race predictor is a useful tool, but can't be trusted blindly, especially when used as an enabler for wishful thinking. I had a great week of running. 86km in total. Two hard interval days on treadmill inclines. Back-to-back long runs (24 and 21km respectively) on a flat -- and mostly free of snow/ice -- bike path to gauge my effort level. Tweaked my back on decline chest presses, but it was short lived. And I continue to be injury free. Told the wife that I'm racing Canyons 25k in California at the end of April ... "well, aren't you becoming the adventurous one" with a mix of jealousy, disapproval, and admiration.

Your warning of not to blindly trust the race predictor and it being an enabler for wishful thinking is just so spot on! I'm happy to have re-learned the lesson! You really had a great week of running and i'm glad wifey is on board with the Canyons 25k. FYI, our partners also get to benefit from our races by dropping it into conversations and bragging about us (although that is something I would never explicitly say to my wife and I highly recommend you don't say to yours🤣).

Hey Matt...good analysis of how your race unfolded. I have a question about your use of power. Are you watching your raw power number or one of the two Stryd Average fields for power (3 second average or 10 second average). I find the raw number to be too noisy to be of any use. What do you find? Thanks.
@its_Matt_B_ Жыл бұрын
You’re right about there being a lot of noise with the real time power number, but that’s what I was using. I was looking at my watch fairly often so I felt like I had a good idea of my power at any given time. I’m sure it would be better for me to use a 3 second average.
@TimGrose Жыл бұрын
Interesting about Stryd. I have found their estimator very "optimistic" - so much so that, as you found, best not to take it as gospel. I think it is partly as their suggested power seems slightly inflated over what you can do based on Auto CP. If I reduce the power suggestion to something I think is more realistic the prediction aligns much better with the ones on my Garmin Forerunner 955 which has been surprisingly accurate over 5K to HM. Am about to see over a full marathon.
@its_Matt_B_ Жыл бұрын
That seems to be exactly it, Tim! I've found my Garmin marathon prediction to be 10-15 minutes more optimistic than i'm capable of. I look forward to hearing how accurate it is for you! When is your marathon?
@TimGrose Жыл бұрын
@@its_Matt_B_ this Sunday in Seville ! At least it is pretty flat there so pace will do me fine. Another problem I find with the Stryd (even the Next Gen one) is that Air Power is often a bit hit and miss. I think my CP came from a 5K race when I got more than I should have done and that obviously bumps up the marathon target power too. I think Stryd are aware of the prediction issues as had some FB "chats" with them.

That's not so much flipping the script as adhering to the script. I went off-book in this race, for sure. Running "easy" in the beginning is definitely the right way to run a marathon but the challenge is finding that line of what's not exactly easy but we can still hold on to.
