This video looks at the tyre camber which is important for improving a race car's performance in turns.

you answered a question thats been bugging me for ages: when is it ever useful to choose positive camber. Kudos for exploring that idea, even if it isn't practical it aids in understanding how and why its used. 🤙

Positive Camber is used a lot in Drag Racing, it is used to increase the amount of tire contact when the car is accelerating in a straight line. The more tire contact you have going in a straight line, the more grip you have.

wouldn't you have better straight line traction with neutral camber? or is it effected by the unique flexing of drag tires?

To tell you the truth I lost passion for racing sims, plus the videos weren't as popular as I'd hoped so I decided to focus all my time on flight sim.

I guess it was obvious, seeing the quantity of flight videos you got. Did you end up selling your wheel?

+sukaNEWT That's very kind of you to say :) No I've still got it, I also play DIRT Rally occasionally. I've just not had a desk sturdy enough to take the constant hammering from a wheel for ages which also contributes to my lack of racing.

Wow thank you. I keep getting told that Negative Camber is bad. That isnt the case then. It may be bad if I am a daily driver but not if i know I'm gonna be making hard cornering. My negative camber is about -2 - -3 right now. I think I will go buy the parts to try to keep it in -1. I am seeing really bad wear on the inside after 20k miles.

you Forget 2 important Things: turning in changes the Camber and what does make a car roll and what not? What is rolling more a f1 car or an old Mercedes A-Class

While making a left turn won't it better to have positive camber for the left wheel?

I think my dads car has something smiler on the front wheels to give it a tighter turning circle.
@MiniRacersRC
@MiniRacersRC 5 жыл бұрын
This might be right for the back wheels. But when a car steers, the front wheels lean to the side that they steer, so this makes the loaded wheel with a negative camber, touch the ground even less: E.g. Car turns left = weight on the right = right wheel leans left because of the steering = negative camber makes the right wheel touch the ground even less ... I'm not a tech but this is how a car's steering system operate. Same goes on my RC cars, with a negative camper on the front gives wear only on the inside of the tire.

To be honest, there's a very small chance I'll do another racing sim tutorial. As you might have seen, my channel is predominantly flight simulation and I might be stopping making videos altogether very soon. Bad news I know but real life stuff will take priority soon.

Positive camber in karting tho
@projectilequestion
@projectilequestion 4 жыл бұрын
I can't really think why a go kart would want camber- they don't roll in cornering. I have heard that positive camber can make a car more stable if it has 'primitive suspension'. Maybe it makes a kart more stable, since as it has no suspension. It might also be, because of the king pin inclination, a go karts wheel might turn to negative camber when the kart is turning, so the positive camber would cancel it out- which is a good thing.
@lume.3887
@lume.3887 4 жыл бұрын
@@projectilequestion yeah, your second point. It increases the contact patch whilst cornering. Kart adjustments are usually the complete opposite to what you would expect in a car
@projectilequestion
@projectilequestion 4 жыл бұрын
@@lume.3887 Unfortunately, I have no experience in modifying karts, so I can't really say. But with a car with double wishbone suspension, if the top wishbone is very short, the top of the wheel actually tilts in when the car corners. 50's and 60's F1 cars used to run positive camber quite a lot.
