A quick guide on making adjustments to the tyre Toe or Tracking and how that effects a car's performance.

Remember: Driving fast is dangerous and probably illegal where you are so save it for a racetrack or controlled environment.... ok? :)

A very slight toe out in the rear can be very beneficial for taming understeering FWD racing cars.

what about 4wd? i would use toe out on the rear to help the car rotate more around it's axis in a turn, and maybe some toe in on the front to give the car some "safe" understeer. mid turn that would be mitigated by a higher ackerman value(by higher i mean higher radius difference compensation when turning)

I drove with toe out when I installed an aftermarket suspension on my truck and left skids all over my street lol

thanks. our crv year 2003 drifted a little during turning left then front-right-wheel-rim hit sidecurb, front-right-wheel-rim got bent as a consequence. we replaced that bent-front-right-wheel-rim. i wonder whether honda checked toe-in setting during tire-rotation-service. i worry that sidecurb-impact-event changed toe-in setting for front-right-wheel-rim. addition --- tire-alignment service checks toe, caster, camber, so maybe toe-in setting were checked. source : 'caster', 'camber', 'toe' in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_alignment from wikipedia-search (tire alignment) result 2

I've found that putting the rear toe at 0.01 creates under steer at high speeds, not sure if that's real but so far most Sims I've played have this physics

Tor out in the rear is good for Fwd car it has better turning and less understeer .

Thanks, I may still come back to rFactor, part of the reason I don't play is because I moved house and no longer had a solid desk to attach my wheel etc to but I may come back to it again one day. Always wanted to understand how to setup cars in a race sim.

Funny, Drifters use the exact opposite of your video. Toe in, in front will make under and very poor directional stability while toe out at rear is extremely unstable and slippery. I think even if I was grip racing I would keep a setup close to drifting: the safest and the most controllable!

In some games where it gives toe as a negative or positive number. Which value would be either toe in or toe out?
@Doofer911

I might be wrong but I think Toe In is the positive value. I could be wrong though, it's a long time since I looked at race sim stuff.

Doofer911 I think you are right. Toe-in is positive toe angle.

Hmm..., I'd kind of contradict you a bit about the front toe in and out effects regarding stability. Just using logics or theory, with front toe in, if you'd even be in a low force turn (let's say in a 0.5 lateral G turn) towards the right for example, the car would be rolling left for a given amount (depends on CG relative to the ground, sway bars torques, suspension stiffness, aerodynamics, etc.) due to the acting centripetal and reacting body inertia forces. The left front tire will have a greater grip force than the right front tire and as such, the overall force will listen to the lateral component vector of the left tire more than that of the right tire. The lateral forces of the front tires are both inwards due to toe-in, but the tire with the greater downforce will lead the resultant lateral force which will self grow up to a limit or equilibrium. Due to this, the car will be continuing the turn on it's own even with the wheel held straight. So basically, the car would only want to keep itself in a left or right long curve without being able to keep a straight line. During tighter cornering, as you've said, it creates understeering and the wheels will start squealing prematurely as the inner curve front tire would be kind of pushing against the outer curve front tire which already suffers from supporting more of the resultant forces. The same principle applies for the toe-out, but with opposite effects. If the car would be in the same rightward turn, the same way the left tire will support more downforce than the right one, but now as both tires naturally create an outward lateral force component and as the left tire force is again greater that of the right, the car would reduce the initial turning force applied and it will settle (this is the word) to a constant turning rate quite quickly. So, the toe-in should give an unstable turning response (you give it a slight turning twitch, but it will keep on turning on itself) up to a limit as it won't be able to make the car spin around because the greater force front tire would be sliding (and losing a bit of grip) before the rear would, while the toe-out would allow for very precise wheel responses, but at greater lateral forces may have both front tires start slipping later than the rear and it may spin out, but on straight line and not too great turns, the toe-out should lead to greater directional stability.

Pretty confident that it is not so much about which tyre holds more grip, but about what the turning circles of both tyres are. I believe toe is mostly responsible for initial turn in where the car still has a flat platform. With toe in, the inner tyre wants to drive a wider circle than the outer tyre which makes the car less willing to rotate. With toe out, the outer tyre wants to drive a wider circle than the inner tyre which makes the car rotate around itself. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Makr pavidis rc driver world champion said. That increasing toe out on the front will make initial steering slower. You are explaning the opposite.. hmm
