Күн бұрын

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the incredible Louis Damani Jones. A revert to the Catholic faith with an incredible story to tell, an African American Catholic with a rich experience of Catholicism to talk about, and a social justice leader in the community, deeply rooted in Catholic social values and the work of some of the best and bright Catholic theologians.
You don't want to miss this episode.
Raised in an activist household Louis had to learn quickly what it meant to take action against oppressive structures from a Catholic point of view. After drifting away from his faith as a teen and young adult, Louis began to dig more deeply into Scripture, the Early Church Fathers, and Church history - and an amazing conversion journey unfolds there, too!
This is a spectacular episode about Catholic social teaching, justice, race, what it means to be an African American in today's North American Catholic Church, and what the Church, says Jones, is the absolute best vehicle for mounting social change and has the best vision of a just world too: with Christ as its centre.

There’s a former Pentecostal minister who is black & became Catholic. He explained to his church why he was converting & the whole church converted to Catholicism with him. I think he had been working Catholic teachings into his sermons as he studied Catholicism, & that’s a big part of why the church converted. I can’t remember his name to save my life, but I’ve seen him on EWTN & in Catholic stuff over the years. Unfortunately, I think he died in the last couple of years.

I was baptized Catholic and attended a Catholic school, but my parents were weak and only went to Mass on Christmas and Easter. My Catholic school was comprised of poor, working class, and middle class kids, and we were racially diverse. Our teachers had high expectations for all of us, not matter what our circumstances, and they treated us all with dignity, taught good virtues, and strong academics along with the Catholic faith. I left Catholic school after 6th grade and fell away from Catholicism for a long time and like Louis, I started to realize that I was substituting politics for religion. I have come back to the Catholic Church fully, and I totally agree with Louis about how the Church does real social justice well. I learned from the examples of my teachers and from the teachings of Jesus that all people should be treated with dignity regardless of socioeconomic status, skin color, or any other superficial category one might dream up.

Great conversation, thank you for sharing. I am so impressed with converts who have read their way into Catholicism through the early fathers and councils. I know the laziness of my spirit, so God was merciful in making me a cradle Catholic, but these stories have really inspired me to go deeper into the truth and majesty of our Church. So grateful for this podcast!

“God was merciful in making me a cradle Catholic”, I’m so happy you stuck with it. Many cradle Catholics have fallen away. I’m a convert of 30 years ago. I did so to be united with my husband and my baby son. My reason was practical whether than out of desire for Jesus in the Eucharist and the fullness of faith. Now I see that my reason was weak but my faith has grown stronger and stronger.

I have a couple of work friends who are Coptic. I am fairly close to one. He is quite sympathetic to Catholicism but I'm not sure he understands the theological differences. He even has a rosary hanging on his rear view mirror. I'm not sure of the differences myself. But given those 21 martyrs of a few years ago I have a warm spot in my heart myself. Great story.

NO works of Charity ( GOOD WORKS ) gets you this damnation 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then they will answer and say, oh carp lord but I'm born again and works don't save you you cant work for your salvation...He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

This is what Protestants get wrong about Catholics. They believe that we are doing charitable works to earn our salvation and fail to realize that our works by faith is because of our salvation. We know that it is through grace and only grace that we are motivated to make acts of charity without expecting NOTHING in return. No recognition no labor pay no self glory, all glory goes to God and none for me. I’ll be honest..the only thing that I’m looking forward in regards to reward are graces.
