Raceday - Le Mans 24 Hour (1966) | Shell Historical Film Archive

Based in France, Le Mans is the world's fastest long-distance motor race, in which two drivers alternate at the wheel to cover the greatest distance in 24 hours. This film documents the Le Mans 24-hour race day. In June, at four o’clock on a Saturday afternoon, 55 racing cars line up at the start of the competition. The vehicles race around the track, occasionally stopping at the pits to refill with fuel and swap drivers. During the night, one driver sleeps whilst the other takes over at the wheel to continue racing until dawn. Cars are crossed off the list of competitors as spectacular crashes put them out of the race. By four o’clock on Sunday afternoon, after 24 hours, only fifteen cars complete the circuit.
This year, the victory goes to a Ford, in one day, the two winning drivers have, between them, covered over three thousand miles, the equivalent of Paris to Moscow and back. And in a year’s time, in June, the crowds will return for the next 24-hour endurance race at Le Mans.
