Absolute love your car, it's beautiful and badass...and hats off to you for all the blood , sweat and tears you continue to put into it. Personally I'd love to have a classic like this but I simply don't have the time, mechanical skills or patience to deal with things constantly not working or needing tweaking. Seems like it's never ending. Makes me appreciate how hard it is must be for manufacturers such as Ford, Dodge, and Chevy to make high horsepower cars such as a ZL1, Hellcat, GT500, etc that are actually reliable.
@gregkersey61062 жыл бұрын
You'll get it ,takes time. You don't want car to squat, but you need to control how fast rear rises, looks like you're unloading rear tires. Rear rises too fast and pulling tires up too. Stiffen up rear shocks, Also make sure you have enough shock travel. If shocks are topping out, that will lift rear wheels off the ground too. Change one thing at a time. Good luck.
@budlanctot30602 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY. I think Greg hit the nail on the head. Rear shocks are too short, pulling rear tires off the pad. Maybe the front shocks are too short, too. Either that or the LCA pivot bushings weren't tightened when the front suspension was in neutral, 'loaded'(holding up weight of car at desired ride height) postion. This is kind of a pain to do, but its important that the bushings are tightened when they are in 'unloaded'(suspension NOT in jounce or rebound but still holding up the car on a level surface). Maybe try loosening the front shock top nut so that it's just barely threaded on the upper stud, and/or put worn-out shocks on front. You do NOT want squat. Squat is what you see on IRS cars. Yours(rear leaf springs, solid axle) should RAISE the back end when rear suspension is loaded by acceleration. The pinion snubber should control the axle rotation on heavy applications of torque. I know nothing about cal-tracs, so I don't know how that affects the equation.

Joe, you need to grind out the 2nd gear stop on your shifter. My 340 Duster Super Stock had that modification. Same for my street cars with a reverse valve body. You don't need to have your hand on the shifter till you're ready to hit 2nd gear. You only need the button for 3rd gear. My car ran 11:30's @ 122mph with a 9" J converter. No trans-brakes back then but it is still a simple mod today. Takes the worry of going from 1st to 3rd and wasting a run. Slap 2nd gear (no button) and shift into 3rd with the button. Easy Peasy! Try it. You'll like it! Mopars rule!

The starting line is more like no prep....front end is not loose enough and sits to high. And 90/10 shocks would be fine with .880 torsion bars. Need at least 5 inches of travel to give those caltracs some help. I'm also not a fan of the trans brake but if your gonna run one get it off the wheel and mount it on the right side to something solid. 2800-3200 rpm.

@circletrack75382 жыл бұрын
When you use a 2 step your not pre loading the suspension ! It shocks the springs which I believe causes the wheel hop !!! Not having full throttle could also contribute to that !! Try a couple times on the foot and see what it does !! Experimenting is always a good thing but one step at a time so you can pinpoint what caused the change !!!! Launched hard but consistency is the key to bracket racing !!! How long is that track you run at if I may ask ??? Would love to see it on a quarter mile !!!!! That car could be sweet show piece too !!!!! One other quick tip if I may never use K-N filters they flow less air then common paper filters ! They also have lube on them which can gum up a carburetor !!
@circletrack75382 жыл бұрын
There's a possibility the converter maybe wrong yet too !!! Your suspension could possibly too soft also !!! Remember a transbrake is the brake so the suspension can't load !!! If your not happy with the 60 fts I believe your problem is still the converter !! Again disengage the transbrake and try footbraking a couple shots ! Almost sounds like the converter slipping instead of locking up !!!! Could also be the trans itself slipping !!! I believe from what I saw could be a spring problem !!! Footbraking it will dispell that !!! Eliminate one step at a time !!!! Not enough gear is an outside chance but possible !!!! I still think it needs stronger springs !!!! Drag racing can be very frustrating !!!! Been there done that !!!

I can't remember but there something you can remove of grind on shift get when it won't look. Try checking tube out or form. I had my roadrunner when I had it with a reverse shift pattern. Basic had a reverse slap stick shifter.

I think I've seen a Winters shifter mounted in a mopar console, and it looked like there was nothing cut up on the console. Looked like it was made for it. Cope sells a shifter thats supposed to be really good. I would call John to see if his shifter works in a mopar console. I thought too, that on your second run, the rear lifted too much, almost picking tires up off the track. I'm not a big fan of pinion snubbers. My 68 roadrunner would launch that way. This was back in the day before caltracs
@carman30612 жыл бұрын
Have you looked into something like what cope transmission sells. It's a bolt in shift gate that turns your stock shifter into a reverse pattern shifter.
@lastmilehangon2 жыл бұрын
You can grind a ramp on the 3rd to 2nd tooth. When you pull second gear it will go without using the button and stop then you only need to push button to get 1st. Works great on the reverse valve bodies you can't miss a gear.
@SimpsonsSpeedShop2 жыл бұрын
Oh sweet! Thanks for the tip!
@lastmilehangon2 жыл бұрын
No problem. When you grind don't take all at once. Just do a little and see how it feels. I stuck the shifter in the vice and tried shifting until I got it haw I wanted it. Mine had a bit of a stop so I didn't start off in second by accident, but if I pulled it harder it would jump that 3rd 2nd tooth. So it felt pretty much normal. Back in the 70s my dad even did it to his column shift roadrunner. Mine was a 69 gts dart with the same shifter as yours.

Hey muscle, head you are as right as rain. I had a 69 GTX, new I had the same problem off the line she would skip and bounce, flipped the torq bars in the front, drag bars and air spring shocks in the rear, remember we are talking about 1970, now at high speeds in a turn rocking back and forth was the kiss of death, you had to be stiff, the car leans and holds out of the turn, Mopar ruled top end I can remember ford and chevys blow,n up on the long runs, see what we would do was let the cubes take over. Now do you understand? I,m talking about 50 years ago. Keep it real.....BB

Looking good Joey! Its trying for sure! From the looks of it, you need to lower the nose of the car so you get more travel. Its trying to wheelie but the track isn't quite there. Also the bouncing typically comes from not enough nose down pinion angle.
