Good topic tonight. Proper oil viscosity is critical. So many people think the 0-30 spec is "too thin" and run thicker oil. Bad move with the MDS system. Several videos on youtube show the failed lifters as well as how to check the MDS valves and VVT for debris. The factory service bulletin says if there are metal shavings in the MDS vavle the motor is toast. Big thing is to catch it early. Like tooth cavities, ignoring it gets painful.

Another spot-on video from RacerX. Thanks! I've had 4 vehicles with the 5.7 Liter (345ci) HEMI Engine and 1 vehicle with the 6.4 Liter (392ci) HEMI Engine. The 5.7s all had the MDS system and easily traveled over 250,000 miles combined with zero HEMI ticks. My 2015 SRT 392 has a 6-speed so it doesn't have MDS and only has 29,700 miles on it, but also doesn't suffer from the HEMI tick. Perhaps, in part, because they all received regular oil changes with Full Synthetic engine oil and "better" oil filters.

Bro is that possible that non MDS 6.4 wont have same parts and wont have engine ticks? I am rlly curious
@RollinIsbell3 жыл бұрын
@@arkansasturin8144 I haven't had the HEMI tick in any of my Dodges. I think using a quality oil and changing on (or ahead of) schedule minimizes the chance of having lifter problems. It's worked for me. But ... IF ... the problem is the lifters in the MDS equipped cars, then the non-MDS cars (the ones with a manual transmission or the MDS has been turned off via tuning) whether they're a 5.7 or 6.4, should have fewer problems.

About 4 months ago, my 392 srt8 started ticking. A week later I started to get misfires and it was throwing p0300 codes. I took it into a dealership; they pulled the oil control valve and it was sprinkled with metal shavings. They did a teardown and said I needed a new long block and rebuild costing $12k! Fortunately I bought the warranty when I bought the car. FCA approved the replacement and the dealership did the work in about 3 weeks. I got the car back with a new long block and all I had to do was baby it for 500 miles. It runs great now! The only change in my driving habits is, since I have an automatic, I drive only with the autoshifter(to keep it out of mds mode)and do all my shifts manually and I don't leave it idling while parked. I love my dodge challenger. It is so much fun to drive and my wife loves it too! RaceX, I love the channel and keep up the good work!

Just want to make a point of this. I am an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician, of 18 years. I drive a 2016 RAM 2500 Laramie 6.4L, the recommended OFL interval is 10k miles. I change my oil every 5k miles. I use only AMSOIL Signature 0w40. Today, 02/22/2021, I developed a lifter tick. I have replaced dozens of Lifters & camshafts, on hemis, due to bad lifters or the rollers on the lifter seizing & wiping out the cam lobes - I always thought it was due to customers not changing their oil regularly enough and going 10k miles between changes which I have always thought was asinine!!!! Very good explanation of the tic problem, both. As a lifetime mechanic and gearhead, I cringe when they try to tell you to go 10k miles on the oil. Your 5k mile is ok but pushing it. Should go with 3k if you're serious about pushing the engine. Watch the pressure gauge. Some engines have lower pressure that's why I never use 0w anything! 5w30 regardless of what's called for.

As a owner of a 2015 Charger Scat Pack with 96K miles there's 3 things that helped my 6.4L engine to keep it clean: 1 - Oil catch can (get this as soon you get the car, there's a lot of oil that gets back to the intake from the EGR) 2 - K&N air Filter (for those who got the car with no cold air intake) 3.- Engine Intake cleanup Service every 50K miles (I did mine at 80K, should done it sooner) As of now no Ticks, around 60-70k miles I rarely noticed knocking on cold idling but went away as the engine warms up it completely went gone as I got the intake cleaned and the spark plugs replaced around 80k miles. I kept the car with the scheduled oil changes with the dealer although the other recommended services such as differential oil change and Intake cleanups were done later as some of them are not cheap but as long you have your trusted mechanic they're totally worth it. People think new cars can run without maintenance and never want to spend a dime on them until they break, all of them need to be maintained. In my Family I've driven Fords, Chevy's, Honda's and Toyota's and all of them let us down the road, the two cars that I actually Owned: 2001 Chrysler 300M during the recession and my 2015 Charger after the recession and have never let me down the road, and I made sure to maintain them in good shape as I could.

I have seen in the last few days other videos about this and have looked into it. I own a 2015 Ram 2500 6.4l and a 2020 scat pack shaker. Some of those videos and stories I read scared the crap out of me at first. But you're right Racer X, REGULAR MAINTENANCE goes a loooong ways. And it's not just with oil changes but trans and dif services as well. Driving these performance cars are extremely fun, maintenance can be expensive. But it's necessary for the longevity, safety and resale value of the car. We spend a lot of $$ for these cars and all the mods we put on them. So looking at what it would cost you to repair/replace lifters and cam ($3000-5000) an $80 dollar oil change every 3500-4000 mile is totally worth it! Trans service every 30,000 $140 +/-. Plus there are some really great fluid additives you can add in for a couple bucks for added protection. I think the ones that fail (2-5%) are due to lack of maintenance. Running them low/empty of fluid and not changing the fluids regularly. And I NEVER go by with what the vehicle tells me, that oil life indication/gauge. I change it at least every 4000 even with synthetic oil. I've had several 20 year plus dealership mechanics tell me that the cars with a regular 3 to 4000 mile oil change, synthetic or Conventional rarely come in for any kind of engine issues or failures. Just my thoughts on all this. Great vids X! Enjoy them all. Keep up the good work and info!

I posted above you the problem I see.Many dodge owners--many younger ones get in over their head and then do not have the money for maintenence and premium gas and changing the oil sooner since those same guys are dogging the shit out of them everywhere.Almost half if not more of Dodge SRTs at the car meets I goto have bald or balding tires--I see them putting normal gas in them also.I am wealthy enough to afford one but I chose an AWD Stinger--because it is as fast in a str8 line as the American V8s--has a 10 year warranty and gets much better fuel mileage. The insurance is also way cheaper because SRTs wreck a lot and get stolen in the top 3 of cars. I was going to get a Jeep SRT--but dodge would not give a longer warranty and basically said exactly what I posted--that the customer base abuses the cars is why they break down--it is that and spotty reliability--also the MPG over a weekend was at 10 mpg and it was DRINKING premium fuel.I would buy an AWD chrsyler or charger SRT--but only with AWD--longer warranty and under 60k.Dodge lo gives one of the lowest on trade ins--but wants max price for their cars.

When I goto meets I cringe at what Dodge owners do.Pretty sure most finance and then do not have the money to maintain these--all while dogging them everywhere they go.I see many with bald or balding rear tires--not going to do a 4 second 60 with anything less then new tires and warm flat pavement.I also see many with the 392 putting normal gas in them instead of premium. One guy recently had no tag on the back--I thought it is because he street races--yeah he does that but said he has no tag cause he could not afford the tag and registration--I mean if you can not afford to own one and maintain it--and then not maintain it and dog an already spotty reliable car--folks are setting up for a disaster.I have an AWD StingerI own it--have dragged it--but I maintain it at the dealer--use premium gas and do not race evryone that comes to a stoplight--with AWD it hooks up so good that i can dust most cars off from a dig anyway.I was also paired with American V8s at the ast drag--have the videos and was fasster then 80% of them because they could not hook up--balding tires and sure some had regular fuel--then wonder why they run a 13 plus 1/4 mile and come nowhere near the magazine times.I beat the magazine time in my stinger--a 12.7--with no launch control.

@ViolentMLG3 жыл бұрын
I would send the oil to a lab and get it checked out. Are you highway driving or city? There is allot of variable factors there. If its HW, in a short period of time, then that's fine, that's usually what these companies are referencing in their labels. Nothing wrong with going 20K miles on 1 oil change if its all HW over a few months. If its city/HW and done over an entire year or more, that's bad IMO. I would change my oil every 4K-6K, maybe 8K tops if its a cheaper daily from a reliable brand. Oil is allot cheaper than an engine. 170K miles isn't allot of miles either. That's par for the course of any vehicle. Most modern cars should hit close to 200K. Most people run some garbage quick-lube oil in their cars and can hit 200K without an issue. Maybe talk about how your oil change interval is impressive at 300K-400K, then you might have a case to be made. At 300K-400K+ is where the legends are made. Shit, even 250K+ is a feat, because after 200K is whenever a car really becomes a problem.
@kkellerk233 жыл бұрын
@@ViolentMLG there is abundance of evidence on Amsoil reliability on internet. I've used it in all my vehicles including my Porsche Turbo without any issue. I've used the 15k or 25k oil change without issue, because they back the oil they sell as well as the data to prove it works from independent companies. I can't help if people don't believe what is being said or done. Just take a look for yourself and see if you want. I've gone down this road many time with folks who are stuck in their ways. I'm a tech and my wife is a Nuclear Engineer, so we both have done our research and came to the same conclusion, Amsoil was the best choice for us. And haven't been proven wrong yet. 🤷♂️ We went from Mobile1 to Amsoil years ago and haven't looked back since. I showed them and they told me that's in factory spec, which was a major lie, on the 4th, yes 4th svc call they again said there's nothing wrong. When they were bringing it back to me the radiator blew. That's the beginning of my nightmare, not getting into hot air but, the other issues I'll mention are the a/c, transmission, 2 rear ends and the computer took a dump and they never did anything about fixing my car. They didn't even care to, the final straw was when going through town at 30mph the #5 piston went and damaged internals and I finally lemon law my Challenger, 22svc calls in 24 months I was so pissed as I wanted to keep that car. The info you shared about the 5.7, and the 6.4HEMI ticking and I never heard, the motor just died. One characteristic my car also has from new: start from cold, make short drive and stop before motor reaches full operating temperature and get valve clatter for 1 sec at the next start. Park car after its reached full operating temperature and the next start, hot or cold, is quiet - no clatter. Did the same after the dealer would service 300 with their standard Mopar filter and their full synthetic oil. 300 still breaking in with less than 15k miles, burning 93 E0. 😊

So, my 2015 charger SRT developed a tick that was out of the normal sound. It had 75k miles at the time. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the cam and lifters under warranty. I actually got a check engine light due to a fuel imbalance. The rumor is, the lifters are failing because of the needle bearings in the rollers. It's not dodges falt, it's the manufacturer of the lifters. I now have 134k miles and no issues since.
@hellcatredeye-g65823 жыл бұрын
Its the needle bearings inside the roller on the lifter that goes bad..I’m rebuilding one right now.. I probably did a good 15 or 20 of them last year..For the exhaust bolts the dealer does have a replacement ones that supposed to solve the problem.. I just did them on my ram Six months ago no problem so far👍

I have had several of the late model Hemi's, one of which had the exhaust leak tick. The newest Ram truck (E-Torque) has had the lifters replaced due to bearing wear. Once again it is now back in the shop again with the same issue. The truck is a 2024 with low mileage and has always received the correct maintenance. I have heard from another web site that the oil pump volume (not pressure) may not be enough. He suggested a oil pump from a hellcat but use the pressure regulator spring from your current pump so that your vehicle does not throw engine codes. The Hellcat pump outputs a high oil volume, thus will keep the lifters lubricated. I also want to stress the point on how important you keep your oil changes to 3 to 5 thousand miles.

I've read that another way to stave off MDS related issues is to never punch the throttle while MDS is active in 4 cylinder mode. Make sure to increase the throttle slightly til you feel it go back to 8 cylinders and then you can go full throttle.

Ex mopar dealer mechanic here.... the “hemi tick” generally comes in 2 flavors. One is considered normal valve train noise (good luck trying to get a dealer to warranty that, though it is possible but It will come back) and 2 is the failure of a lifter that wipes out the rear of the cam. It’s caused by the oil ports being too small on the upper end of the engine. I should note this is usually limited to 4th gen rams years 09-18 but I usually see 09-14 with the most problem.

When I bought my car used it had a slight tic on cold start for 10 seconds or so. My first oil change i used full synthetic oil and I havent had a tic since. The header tic in your video is not the tic my car was doing. It was a subtle ticking sound that I attribute to lifters. I assumed cheap oil and I think I was right. Dodge says 5,000 mile oil changes... same with my harley... nope 3,000 in my home. Oil is cheap compared to an engine. I dont let new vehicle engines warm up long. Just don't punch the throttle until the car has warmed up. But you can drive cold, it allows the lifters to get pumped up.

Glad you touched up on this. Tony's Garage was saying it's lack of lubrication and a flaw in the design of the newer HEMI engine. Mabey the lack of lubrication is a result from sitting at idle. Oil changes and Idle times go hand in hand in this case. Do you oil regularly and don't let that HEMI sit idling!
@RacerX93 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly.. the cam is located much higher in the engine than in the LT and LS engines.. thus they get less oil splashing up on the lifters .. which in this situation is not ideal

Surely a manufacturer can do better than this. I do love the car. Even my Dad would give this the nod over the '70 Challenger if he were still alive. I'll be pulling the motor and adding oil dribblers in the valley. I believe I'm also using this as the excuse to build the forced induction bottom end as "insurance parts" lol. Time to research how much power the short block will handle!
@JohnSmith-zw6tr2 жыл бұрын
WRONG, it’s NOT the MDS. We’ve had plenty of HEMIs with manual transmissions (NO MDS) have cam/lifter failures. It’s related to idle times due to the lower oil pressure at idle which is why it effects FLEET vehicles more often. Hellcats aren’t effected as much because they have a HIGH VOLUME oil pumps. And, the Hellcat oil pump bolts right on to a 5.7 HEMI just fine. Normal Gen III HEMI 5.7 oil pumps at idle average 20-25 psi. A 5.7 with a Hellcat oil pump averages 46-50 psi. Almost DOUBLE.
@westwasbest16 күн бұрын
Doesn't matter how much oil pressure or volume that you have, the issue with these motors is the distant area that needs lubrication only obtains it from splash off off the camshaft, particularly at low idle not enough oil splashes up into these areas, doesn't matter what type oil pump you have it's still a physics issue.

From the research i've done a big problem is the angle of the the lifters in the valve train and the addition of an oil gallery which blocks the lifters from being properly lubricated. Basically, in a normal valve train there is a certain amount of slinging oil to provide lubrication. In the Hemi that additional oil gallery blocks that oil. There is a theory that when the engine is at idle, there is no slinging oil but at speed there is. So yes, there are two trains of thought. 1. spending excessive idle time does break down the oil by time, not by miles. 2. spending excessive time at idle does prevent proper lubrication. I don't let my engine idle for more than 5 - 10 minutes, Just turn it off, a starter is much cheaper than an engine.

I’ve got a 2004 Ram Rumble Bee and the engine has had the Hemi tick for the last 10 years and I’ve had 2 different short blocks in it and used the same heads on both. On the second short block I had the head milled, ported and polished and used all 6.1 top end parts and a Comp 260 in both. Still have the tick to this day with zero negative effects, and that’s usually the case. As he said the intake manifold bolts like to back out. If your cowl seal is bad and water pools on your intake, when you start you engine it could suck that water in through that gap and vapor lock your engine and you’re going to have a bad time and since liquid won’t compress something has to give. When using headers I’ve found that using factory gaskets prevents the exhaust leak, learned that one the hard way! As for the MDS, I don’t have any experience with it. Try using Redline 5w30, a lot of people have had great luck with it as far as almost if not completely silencing the tick. Mopar lifters are cheaply made and just suck half the time. Some people have used Crower lifters and that eliminates the tick, they’re pricey though! @astcomjakecw3 жыл бұрын
I just wanna make a few mentions here, when people say hemi tick, they usually mean the chatter under the hood from valves and lifters. Thats not what we are talking about here, chatter is fine, its normal... The trick is not normal. The lifter tick is a different sound and can end in a dead cam lobe and noticeable power loss as a result. The shavings from the cam can also get into bearings and destroy them as well. So if you hear it, get it fixed before it does more damage. Its also not just the MDS engines, the non MDS manual cars do it as well, just not as often. As for why it happens at all, its because the Gen 3 hemi block has horizontal lifter bores where normal SOHC engines use vertical lifters. This is a problem because they cant get as much oil from the crank weight splash. They have trouble pumping up, the lifter bores go dry and scuff the housings up, and the roller bearings go dry and bind (which is wat causes the cam lobe damage) If you let them run below about 1500-2000RPM for extended periods, they will starve of oil and it becomes a higher risk. Give it a gentle rev every couple minutes and make sure they are staying wet. And yes it does happen to a LOT more than 2% or 3% of engines. The 6.4 seems to be the worst offender, MDS or not. It happens so much in the Scat packs that you see several posts every week about it from people in the facebook groups. Dodge refuses to recall the engine for obvious reasons. But they will fix it under warranty. They are snaky about it though. The default answer at dodge for anything in these cars seems to be "oh thats normal". So make sure you know what youre talking about and show them that, so they will cut that crap out. That service tech knows damn well theres a lifter issue if he hears it. They were told to say its normal. The engine will last past its warranty period with the problem so if you walk away and accept it, by the time it dies, well, Dodge doesnt care. And before you say "well dodge does care" no, they care about profit margins. Go look at your trunk and hood alignment, and you fender pinches. But back on topic, some of the 6.4 guys (even the stick shifts) have been in 3 or 4 times since the car was new (and theyre only like 5 years old) to get lifters and cams replaced. Which is a hint as to why they tell everyone its normal and try to get you to go away. The long term fix is hellcat lifters (they are designed for much more severe use and can handle it better), but it will void the warranty. So pick your poison. - An engineer

Good trade😂 but honestly the SRT motors are a stable platform

@@RacerX9 I took it to 2 different dealers.. both told me it was the lifters. Had 15k miles, on time oil changes, didn’t idle long. Just unlucky I guess. They replaced the lifters under warranty, but I wasn’t going to keep that lifter eating 5.7 long term. So I traded. Scatpack at 12k miles so far so good 🤙🏼

Frequent oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals is the key to prevent this. I’m at 86,000 and there’s no tick. Always drive it on sports mode if you haven’t deleted the MDS mode. Drive it hard frequently especially if it’s garage kept. I don’t recommend thicker oil but I did 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer and 6 quarts of 5-20 full synthetic I would then drive it around hard to get the Lucas on all the components inside then change the oil again with 7 quarts of full synthetic. That way dry starts aren’t harsh on the engine.

If a modern engine can’t idle for hours on end day after day, then the engine is poorly designed.

Then that’s pretty much every engine....

@@joshkrause2977 seems to be. Ford, dodge and Chevy all have this issue. They didn’t 20 years ago. Seems engines are more advanced but poorly designed.

@@ohboy2592 it's all this new tech. Cars just are throw aways now days. I wouldn't trust a honda with a turbo engine and a CVT either now days. If you drive alot and finance a extended warranty is a must these days. The only really reliable car left that can do 200k+ miles no major repairs consistently is most likely lexus.
@ohboy25923 жыл бұрын
@@MLProductions.1 I hear you. We have a’13 crv and was going to get a new one when it is time but not now. CVT are junk, that turbo motor has issues so no more Honda CR-V for us after this one. Honda should have left their engine and trans alone. Both are more costly and worse for the environment right now.
@MLProductions.13 жыл бұрын
@@ohboy2592 yup. They do have good tech that lasts ect. But what good is it when the power train is falling apart at 80k miles. The only car I'd really trust now days is the simple Toyotas. And lexus. The new IS500 will be a beast and absolutely a tank. The IS350 is proven it's a decade + old power train. The es350 all of them their old school with new tech. But I like to drive what I enjoy I don't keep my cars 10+ years eitherway.

I had a charger scatpack and never knew I'f my car would start when I needed it to .the radio would turn itself on and completely drain the batteries 3 different times. every time I took my car in they would give me the run around to avoid replacing the radio .so I traded it in and now I'm actually happy peace of mind I know my car will start with no problems. Will never buy a Mopar again was fun but definitely not worth the bs .theses things are a problem waiting to happen

Recently had the same issue, but with the 5.7 charger. Came out for work, everything dead. Actually, the info screen briefly lite up, then everything dead. Wouldn't take a charge, had to tow it to dealer. Of course, they couldn't figure out anything, asked if I was sure I didn't leave anything on lmao. Hasn't happened since *yet, but there are def electrical issues with Dodge

@@216standonit4 yea they definitely do have electric problems. The way I found out my radio would turn itself on was one day at work I walked passed my car and I could hear music playing so I walked up to it and the info screen was on and the radio was playing music .I know for sure I didn't leave it on but dodge just couldn't figure out what was wrong with the car so had to get rid of it
