Thank you. I have a 2013 ram 5.7 hemi with only 77k miles. I've used the synthetic oil and change the oil frequently. One issue I have seen is that, the design of the engine, where the lifters are close to horizontal, and trucks used where they idle a long time are causes of this. Several videos out about this topic.

Hey Alex, GREAT video. I'm 70 and am going to be doing this on my nephews 5.7. But I think instead on going back with the MDS lifters I'm going to replace with non MDS lifters, remove the MDS solenoids and replace with factory block off plugs, and flash the ecm to turn off the MDS system. This way the lifters will be supplied with pressurized oil to the lifters all the time and not just when the MDS system is activated and it will run on 8 cylinders all the time. I did something like this on my son's Honda so it would run on all 6 cylinders all the time. The engineers that came up with these systems have done so at the expense of the consumers. It 's a shame. But automotive engineers will keep us mechanics in business forever. Good luck with your family business.

I just had this exact thing happen to a Dodge Journey and it was caused because the old timer was using conventional oil that sludges up the engine. It was also way too thick. It was at least 20W. For everyone out there, please, when your engine and manual say 5W-20 full synthetic, use that oil. It was designed for it. If you think you know better than the people who spent millions of dollars developing that engine it will cost you 1000’s of dollars in repairs. Just do what the manual suggests, please and thank you. Also, Alex, you are a stand up dude. I just found your channel today and I love it. Good stuff, man.

I have had my 2012 ram 1500. I don’t use the recommended 5w-20 I instead used 10w-40 and that’s on all my vehicles. Motor has 210k miles on it with no tick at all. Thicker oil helps and also the fact that my MDS system doesn’t work due to MAF sensor. So all cylinders run all the time. Eco mode never cuts on. To each their own though my friend. I just think that it being an engine with more miles then the piston rings and other components have weared down some and not necessary to use the 5w-20
@SirHoffinator1013 ай бұрын
Um….using the proper viscosity oil is important however, if you change your oil at proper intervals based on oil type (good quality conventional vs good quality synthetic) it will operate the same. Engines are designed to run based on oil viscosity (especially Hemi with MDS and shutdown solenoids) not on synthetic vs conventional.

Man, let me say it’s a lot easier then you would think. Only stupid issues is the lightweight torquing, because the little bolts/screws love to snap. I will say, only thing I knew about vehicles is oil changes, brakes replacements and spark plugs. But when my Cam and cylinder #8 lifter took a sht I couldn’t afford the to pay a mechanic $4000+ for 22hrs of labor and parts. So I researched YT like crazy and bam magically got it all completed, couple little bumps in the road, like 4 snapped oil pan bolts, 1 camshaft plate screw snapped, and had to replace the timing cover crankshaft seal twice cause wrong directions left and right(don’t not lube seal at all, anywhere no it). I upgraded the oil pump from the cheap OEM JGC 5.7L(idle around 24+psi) stock one to a direct bolt on Hellcat/SRT 6.2L oil pump, because it’s basically a high pressure/high volume pump part# 68195993AD (idle 35+psi). Upgraded the CAMSHAFT with a Scat pack 392 6.4L MDS/VVT CAM part# 5038419AB (direct fit no modifications at all, still used the oem stock but BRAND NEW rods, 16 lifters, and valves. Just upgrade the springs from that cheap crap MOPAR used to their NEW ones, way better quality.) And then I just throughly cleaned everything, since I was deep in there. Replaced all gaskets, water pump & thermostat(from 203degree to 180degree), timing chain and components, upgraded the OEM alternator(weak 160amp or something like that) to a 300amp for really no reason just great deal and a few other things. The job is just time consuming and can feel tough but it is doable with the right info of direction. But like he said, use a high quality oil. 5.7L says 5-20w but I’m using RP 5-30w has almost 10% better viscosity with BG’s MOA.

Nope 3 months later and $3500 later they replaced the lifters with aftermarket and replaced the cam as it ground it down now. 500 miles later and the same code just popped up again. Went to different shop and they said due to the metal shavings in the system they would need to now replace the engine with a remanned Jasper $11,500 or Dodge dealer offered a factory rebuild installed for $14,500. Any ideas why the repairs didn't take? I just want my vehicle to run right its been almost 2 years now. I would also like your advice if the engine can ever be reliable again or if it needs replaced. I had similar code (I don’t remember what cylinder) but that cylinder had the lifter with the seized roller. It took the lobe off the camshaft causing the intake or exhaust valve to not open enough. Since the code is reoccurring, I would HOPE the mechanic at least checked your coil pack and out. If it’s still happening now, swap a coil off a different cylinder, clear code and drive it. If the code follows your coil, it’s the coil otherwise. Good chance they didn’t touch the oiling system the first time and the lifters weren’t getting the oil they needed and had the same Problem come back. I HOPE they did an oil change at the bare minimum after the original repair.

Lots of theories going around about these engines. I have a 2015 with 80K and I am hearing a tick, but it's ever so faint. If I have to break into the engine, a little hotter cam will go in along with non-MDS lifters. One of the prime theories on why these engines eat cams is excessive idling where the oil pressure is low. Police vehicles or service vehicles in general seem to be notorious for failing lifters. This makes me wish I kept my 2004 which was running flawlessly when I traded it for the 2015. I wonder if you had to replace some exhaust manifold bolts. They tend to break a lot on these engines. I wonder how many miles the truck in the video had? It might have been mentioned, but I didn't hear. Great video!!

Trading my 2019 now with 33k miles off before 100k miles for a newer Ram. For some reason it has 50 lbs. per swuare inch oil pressue most all the time. Use moter craft full synthetic 5/20 oil. Staying with Ram as Ive seen a lot of newer 5.3 GMC and Silvarado engines blow up rods?, lifters, cams at 60k miles. Said they got a bad batch of lifters, rods, and cams from China. The GM 5.7 vortec also has cylinder deactivation. Never messed with buying ford with their small turbo chsrged engined. Sadly Ram is going to replace Hemi after 20 years with 6 twin turbo. @@coloradoamx1 sorry to hear that. I've been happy with my mopars so far. That can happen with anything these days I guess.

@@coloradoamx1 I've heard that long idle times will damage the cam and lifters in the hemis. Is that what you have?
@coloradoamx15 ай бұрын
@@rightwinger1505 I don't idle the truck at all. The longest idle time is sitting at red lights, and if that is too long to idle until the light turns green that's nuts. I don't even let the engine idle during the winter the warm up the truck. I generally start the engine, let it run long enough to get the oil moving and drive slowly until it warms up. The Internet, especially YouTub, is swarming with Hemi's with this issue. Significant design flaw it seems.

My 2012 Dodge challenger RT had a full lifter + cam swap and is still ticking and just got a engine light for misfire . What would you recommend thank you so much
@peatmoss49462 жыл бұрын
so how it...ive had the lifers and cam shaft done 3 times in the last 4-5 years...(napa canada OEM parts)...last they didnt last ayear .and here we go again......is there a high performance shaft solution than replacer...better type of lifters....and change oil pump from high pressure to a high volume one. or just buy rebuilt.....just about same workload....more cost......but piece of mind?!

We purchased a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 hemi 5.7 L on Feb 28... It was in the shop by March 1. The shop kept it 2 months. Replaced lifters, camshaft, oil pump, water pump.... warranty we purchased would not cover because it was a pre-existing problem. Picked it up on a Friday and by Sunday the check engine light came on and the truck started shaking. Took it to O'Reilly's to be scanned. It showed injectors I believe. So took it back to the shop on the next day, Monday. The mechanic said it's a stuck lifter. It's been there for a month again and he has yet to even start on it 🙄 this has been one of THE MOST frustrating things we've ever dealt with!!! Wish we could have y'all fix our truck!!

Dang, sorry to hear that! I wonder what brand of lifters they used?? 🤔

My ram had lifter and cam failure. just sold it two weeks ago. Ridiculous money pit.
@d.l.horton209310 ай бұрын
My theory on way the lifter and cams get destroyed is.... the lifters are too solid and push too hard on the cams and rockers. And when something like that happens something has to give and its the bearings and cam shaft that gives up first. The lifters need a bleed off hole? What are your thoughts?

Hellcat oilpump will help w this issue. A lot of tick is because when idle there is not enough getting sent.

I have done a bunch of these at my shop I have 2 at my shop now. One the customer has a warranty one of the lifters came apart the roller was good still the cam wasn’t worn but has slight chatter marks which go the opposite way the lifter and cam rotate so the length of the cam which makes sense because the lifter had excessive lash so the cam lobe was smacking the lifter from the lash but the warranty company doesn’t want to replace the cam they want to replace lifters on one side well I specialize in engine work and that’s not gonna happen I’m not gonna have the customer come back in 6 months with the same problem.

Alex, I have a question for you, brother. I hope you don't mind. When replacing the Camshaft and valve lifters. Should one also replace the Oil pump and pickup tube and timing chain ? Or is it not necessary? If you don't have time to answer, I hope you and your family are doing amazing and stay safe. God bless.

We just purchased a 2012 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi. A mechanic looked it over before we purchased it, said lifters and timing chain were good. The day we picked it up it was making a noise similar to this video. We brought it back the next day. His mechanic said sounds like rear main.... Now a week later he's saying bad rear bearing and we'll need a new engine. We did purchase a warranty thank goodness. But it feels suspicious that it was "checked out" 2 weeks ago & when we picked up it's making a loud knocking noise & needing a new engine 😕 I have a video of the truck running but can't find how to add it to comments.

Just now seeing your reply. The mechanic ended up replacing the lifters, camshaft, oil pump, water pump. We took it back within 2 days because the check engine light came on and it started shaking. I'll send a video of the sound it originally made. It still makes a ticking sound after all that work though.

im surprised the engine didnt get damaged from all the metal in the oil. how bad do they have to get in order for engine to be shit? my buddy has a 12 ram that needs cam and lifters. i can do it but not for free lol. i just did the entire front end on my 06 commander. i mean everything you can think of too you name it and its new. put new seals in transfer case as well. it was alot of work but damn did it need it. the lady i bought it off of never took care of it. it only has 114 on the clock as well.
