Recently, I really freaked out my party when I said my character was only seven (He was Aarakocra, obviously). One guy was even saying, "F***, we're not kidnapping you, are we?" It was great.

I have an Aarakocra Monk named "Kah!" who insists they aren't birds in origin. When people ask him why he thinks that he looks at them (always appearing to have a blank expression), holds up his arms and says in a deep but squawking voice: "NOT birds. SIX limbs. Bah. Ska..."

Character backstory concept: Aarakocra falls asleep while gliding in the elemental plane of air. Wakes up in the material plane confused. During the campaign their goal is to find their way back home.

Three years late to this party! But just wanted to comment because I'm running an Aarakocra Monk and it's so damn fun. The dex and wisdom bonus gives you a killer AC and some solid damage per turn. Very interesting race no doubt.

For movement, the nice thing is they have 50 feet of flying speed 25 feet of ground speed, which is a 2:1 ratio. So, for every 5 feet they move on the ground that's 10 feet less they can move in the air that turn. Basically, they have 50 feet of movement in the air which is they're normal speed, but not being on the ground is like difficult terrain so it just halves their movement. If you think about it like that it's easy to combine them on the same turn. i.e., Run 5 ft, fly 10 ft, run 5 ft, then fly 20 ft.
@dascientist8443
@dascientist8443 4 жыл бұрын
You can walk 25ft, then fly another 25ft. When you start to use a new speed, it's treated as if you had been using that speed the whole time. This does create the awkward situation where you can walk 25ft then fly 25ft more, but you can't fly 25ft then walk another 25ft. So I don't see any real issue ruling it the way you suggested.

I made my first Character today. They're an Aarakocra who is six feet tall and 1,050 lbs. I am extremely religious and believe that tradition should never be broken, as I was taught by the priest that took me in after my parents died. I misquote sacred texts in every situation. I have a wand and dagger, and am Lawful Good. My name is Mom.

3:58 that’s about right, in nature the average for wingspan is 3-4 times height even for extinct birds around the same size like the Argentavis or Haast’s Eagle/Harpagornis.

Both of you are awesome for a podcast, just getting into D&D myself and this is super helpful for lore as i'm looking to DM soon in the future. You get some minor stuff wrong from other D&D stuff i listen to and all the books i have but it doesn't even matter because both of you have such high charisma scores.

Im trying out an Aarakocra, but in order to keep things easy for my DM who is super experienced (and im not experienced as a player) I had him be born with malformed wings that cannot sustain flight, and as such he was abandoned by his family at birth spartan style, and so part of his drive as a character and his reason for adventuring is trying to find some way to become whole, and to rejoin his tribe.

It is a real thing that various animals do reach maturity very early. Like for example, most mice live only to be between 6 months and 1 year, and reach maturity at about 1 month

I think the best part about the Aarakocra, is that they ARE so alien, so it makes a lot of fun to play them, for me. also, Birds are just cool, who doesn´t want to be a bird ^v^

I’ve an idea in my next campaign that there is a civilization of tropical Aarakocra in a dense jungle. They are currently fighting a war against some Yuan-ti that have somehow discovered a dark magic that can corrupt the arrakocra into Kenku. The yuan-ti mainly want them as slaves, but rumor has it that the leader wants some ancient artifact the the Aarakocra have.

The Elcor from Mass Effect communicate emotion via smell, that's why they need to say it out loud for outsiders. Not subtle inflection. Just an FYI.

Knowing you're playing with winged characters just means you have to be careful in how you plan missions. Going through tunnels the wings are no advantage, and going into situations where if you go alone (if the rest of your party isn't winged) you'll end up dead your extra mobility isn't going to help much. In tunnels a Druid who turns into a Giant Spider is more use than a Aarakocra. Sure, above ground there'll be situations when the character has an advantage, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Let them steal a pie from a tower window occasionally.

Also introduces some cool RP elements- someone used to flying in the open skies is going to get really claustrophobic in a tunnel or dungeon really quickly.
