@patrickfahey6722 It is done so that people from all backgrounds can afford to become an MP. The alternative would be only very wealthy people would be MPs and that would not be representative of the public. Travelling to and working in London is expensive. They spend a lot of time away from their families. Such rubbish is spouted about their expenses. They get a good allowance of £25 a day if they stay in a London hotell. That's why they get subsidised meals. Of course the subsidised meals are for all of the staff who work on the Westminster estate. A large proportion of MPs do not have other jobs or financial interests.
@EgoChip
@EgoChip Ай бұрын
@@dianefarnden8577 I get that, but many people have similar costs related to their job, but most people have to pay their own rent, travel, fuel, food etc. Isn't that what a salary exists for? When these politicians are clearly not in need of those expenses they claim, while at the same time, taking away from those who are not only in need of the pennies they pinch but are put in mortal danger because of it, then it's extremely unfair. If you cannot see the injustice in that, then something is seriously wrong with you.

sssh, don't give the game away with logical arguments like this. But don't worry, nobody administering parliamentary expenses is going to investigate fraud against the taxpayer - it is a proverbial "free for all" and part and parcel of the Westminster "gravy train". The biggest insult and hypocrisy of all - financing a violent extreme right wing nationalist regime - while sending innocent grandmothers to jail as "right wing terrorists" for writing things in frustration at government incompetence that they don't really mean. Utterly pathetic. And worse still, the 600 million pounds will make zero difference to what is going on in Ukraine - it will probably be "pocketed" by somebody and stashed in a bank in a tax haven somewhere - well, at least the money that remains after the usual "administration charges" have been skimmed off the top. After all, who accounts for how this, or any other, money is "spent"?
@pmkeith

We live in a village, miles from supermarkets or larger shops, and have a very infrequent bus system. To expect the elderly to catch a bus to travel at least five miles to do their weekly shopping and get the bus home again, then carry the heavy shopping from the stop to their home, is totally unrealistic. Any local shops are always more expensive, so are only used in emergency. Most elderly who,own a car only use it for these reasons.

And the bus takes 90 minutes and the car journey would take 40 mins. Re the pension being a benefit. They are trying to make it that way. It's not a benefit at present as you dont' have to apply for it. A benefit has to be applied for - like they are making people apply for the pension credit. This is why so many old folk won't do it. They don't want benefits.

How can someone struggle on a such a high salary? It comes through life choices! If you decide to live in a large house, drive expensive cars, have a varied social life, have multiple meals out and take-aways, etc.etc. then the money won't go far. If they cut it back to the nub, then they could life very well. i.e. down size house, car, social life, their overheads will be minimal. How is it that the average salary is £35k and people live on it. Even double salary homes get less than her, assuming that the second salary is the same. More than likely it will be less.

If these people are struggling on that amount of money they need to put a pensioner on their payroll to help them manage their money. If they think of taking the bus pass away maybe they should pare back their transport too. A folding e bike should be given to them for transport or a rental e-bike with trailer if needed.
