I was working in supermarkets when the challenge 21 (and later challenge 25) came in. It is an absolutely ludicrous scheme but our employers made it very clear that we would face disciplinary or dismissal if we didn't follow the rules. With your supervisor breathing down your neck and your bosses hiring undercover shoppers to make sure you stick to policy, you're not going to break the rules if you need the job (and back then, I needed that job!). I got a written warning (two written warnings in a year and you're fired) for serving someone who (according to my supervisor) looked under 25. I knew he was over 18 since he ran the pub down the road but they said it didn't matter - I still should have ID'd him. The whole scheme is based on subjective opinion and makes no sense. TL;DR - The cashier isn't to blame for the bullshit corporate policy.

I worked in a shop briefly when I was 16 and spoons used to come up on the till as "cutlery" which also included forks and some quite large kitchen knives. The knives obviously had an age restriction on them, but because they were all just classed as cutlery, the till would flash up asking for ID even when it was just a spoon.

The funniest one I've been IDed for is wood, as in kiln dried kindling, wood. It hadn't been treated in any other way other than being dried. The funny thing was, they were selling kiln dried timber, so more wood, a few meters away. So wood is fine for anyone to buy, except when its been chopped into small pieces. Though come to think of it, I could have asked the attendant to chop the timber into approximately kindling sized pieces which wouldn't get ID checked.

We were having a BBQ on the beach and they'd happily sold us matches and a couple of knives, but spoons were a no go. I don't think this is simply about ID checking, especially with regards to that first story. It's about you having your ID and still not being able to buy something because you are in a company of someone underage/without ID even if you are the one doing the shopping. It happened to me and it is laughable. I had to ask my friend to wait outside the shop so that I can do my groceries.

If a group of 17 and 18 year olds are buying alcohol, even if an 18 year old hands over the money, it would be reasonable to assume they will all drink it. If the hop assistant sells them alcohol they would be breaking the law. Now, the 17 year olds could just wait outside, but then it would just be them and their friends breaking the law, not the retail assistant.

@@AvPTomo yes it does work like that if you have suspicions that an age restricted item is being purchased for or on behalf of an under age person, and you sell them that item and it is for an under age person, You can be fined, it is the law. Anyone who works retail knows that, and what you said about parents with kids/babies that's stupid dude its obviously not for the kid and they wouldn't be refused. Also If a group of people come to my till with alcohol and they looked under 25 I will need to see all their I.ds, and if just 1 of them didn't have it, the sale wont be made. Not worth the risk of job loss and fines.

The same kind thing happened with me and my mates. We were in Asda, I was 19 my 2 mates were 18. I had ID and my mates didn't, i was buying the drink when 1 of my mates put a bottle of coke on the counter and said here's the money pay for it with the booze and gave me £1. The woman behind the counter than asked him for ID, he said "you seen me put a bottle of coke down and you're asking me for ID"? She replied you're all together and I can't serve you unless you all have ID. We left £30 of beers on the counter and said okay we'll go to Tesco then. Got it from Tesco with no problem at all. And I wonder what if the person at the counter doesn't look over 25? should the person buying the drinks ask them for ID to make sure they're old enough to sell it to them? I might try that next time.

so is this common to a lot of places over seas? i know in the US we don't card the whole group. but alot more places are just starting to card no matter what age you look like. i went to a different state last year and i know every place we went to we got carded. * im 35 and the person i work with was 53. pretty easy to tell we are far from 21 lol * but even now in my home state restaurants have started doing this. guess it is just easier to be safe

Supermarkets have a Challenge 25 (or even 30) policy, so staff asking Rachel's brother for ID (who was 21) is perfectly reasonable and acceptable. Admittedly, him being covered in tattoos is a giveaway, but that's still no excuse not to go without ID... Having said that, asking grannies for ID is taking it a step too far.

I have never heard of a law where you need ID to walk near someone who's buying beer. That seems both ridiculous and completely uninforceable. How do they define who's 'together'? Wouldn't people just go up to the cash separately and meet up again afterwards? Or wait outside? What does this accomplish? What if you're buying beer and bump into someone you know (who is underage and isn't buying alcohol) and start chatting near the cash? Are they suddenly going to say you're 'together' and so you can no longer buy alcohol? Do you need to get a babysitter to go to the grocery store if you have kids? She had ID and so she was allowed to buy alcohol, so the fact that her brother happened to be there too was irrelevant.

RoyPhee When you worked as a cashier, did you ask people for ID if they _weren't_ buying alcohol, though, but were just tagging along with a friend or family member? That's the part I find crazy and have never encountered. IDing someone to buy alcohol - yes, totally normal and expected everywhere I've lived or visited. IDing someone for accompanying another person? No, that is strange and is not the law anywhere I've lived or visited. As a child I often did groceries with my dad, and that included when he was buying a bottle of wine. Similarly I've been out with friends who wanted to stop and buy some beer, when I myself was a non-drinker. Never was I asked for ID simply for accompanying someone else who was buying alcohol.

junbh2 The sales assistant has to make a judgement whether they believe the alcohol is being bought for the individual or the group. I understand what you are saying because if a 60 year old pensioner came in to buy cigarettes with his 13 year old grandson; then it is likely that he is buying cigarettes for only himself and probably will go through the sale without ID'ing the 13 year old. If a group of young adults (say 18/19 years old) came in to the store buying a 12 pack of beer, then it is not unreasonable to suspect they are all going to be drinking that beer. Even if the individual that hands over the cash is over 18. Therefore ID'ing each individual is expected. Of course if the individual over 18 buys it and gives it to a group of 16 year olds around the corner outside, then there is nothing the sales assistant can do about that.

As you say, there's nothing to stop the younger friends from just waiting outside - it's a completely trivial thing, and if they do, then they and the person who gave them alcohol are breaking the law, not the clerk. And there's no way a clerk can accurately judge what they 'think' someone buying beer is going to do with it - I have often as a non-drinker been hanging around with people who do drink. That's kind of what Rachel is talking about -- people thinking that a job gives them way more authority than it really does. Their job is to follow the law, not appoint themselves police and randomly refuse service to people.

As a person who works at a grocery store the law is if they look under 25 you have to ID them if you fail to do that and the person was a test purchaser they can revoke the license from the store, the person selling the product can technically have a fine too, get your point but it's not worth not doing.

Yeah and it generally is not that hard to carry your ID in your wallet, especially when you know you are in your early twenties and are going to buy alcohol. Its not like people do not know about this law and the fact that you can't just tell peoples age by looking at them. It gets ridiculous if the person is 100% old enough, but that is only easy to tell when they are really older, and not just by 10 years. Otherwise there is reasonable doubt. What is a bit weird however is when its about an adult that can ID himself buying alcohol with a minor present. Unless there is reason to believe it is for the minor/potential minor than it should not be a problem. Otherwise its starts getting ridiculous. But in the story Rachel told, there was indeed reason to believe that the alcohol might be also for the potential minor in the group, so she shouldn't be bitching about it if the youngest person in the group doesn't have their ID on them. It gets weird however when adults take their children shopping and simply can't buy alcohol because of that. And I get why the workers are overly careful, but in these cases it really does become more than just a little inconvenience.

My friends and I were in Alton Towers last year and wanted to buy a beer in of the pubs there. The person behind the bar asked us to show our IDs, which was ridiculous anyway, because we were all 22 and certainly looked old enough. We showed her our standard Belgian ID cards, which she said she'd never seen before and wouldn't accept. We then went on to show her 3 other types of identification (driver's licenses, student cards from uni and our isic cards) and she still wouldn't serve us.

I'm 55 with a grey beard. I was in a Walmart and my Drivers license expired. My nephew was with me (he is 38) and we wanted to buy a couple of beers. (I normally do not drink which makes this more amusing) I tried first and discovered that my ID expired so I could not buy it. Stupid law but I understand and did not get upset until the clerk refused to sell to my nephew because, and I quote: "He could give it to you" like I was underage! I asked her if that would be "Contributing to the Delinquency of an Elderly Person" and she did not react. What's more is that she acted as if we were going to cause trouble. I almost NEVER drink and we were heading home to drink once we were home. She was being an idiot! We just went elsewhere and I did not go in. problem solved but man! How frustrating!

Maxdecphoenix. As a student I philosophy I just can't pass this up, so here are few points to that. Yes its Government infringing on your Rights, of course it is, that is what a Governments job is. Every law is infringing on peoples basic rights, which naturally include everything, since by nature we have absolute freedom to do whatever the fuck we like. So we have government to make up reasonable rules. And while I agree that the numbers are just that, numbers, there is some basis to a lot of those, and they are usually based on philosophy and psychology, which are the experts in that field. To go with Immanuel Kant, who is considered the champion pro personal responsibility and the existence of free will, even he said that most people only have the possibility for a free will, but are living in self-imposed immaturity. So going of Kant, most people are not to be considered mature enough for a lot of stuff, regardless of age. But for laws and a working society, we have to make up basic rules and guidelines. So we have to find an age that we can assume someone at least has a certain point of maturity, even though age isn't proof of it. We have to make up an age at which we can start to charge people with crimes, usually 14, and an age at which we start to charge them with crimes as actual adults, usually 18 or 21. And we have to set up an age at which people can consent to sex, in Germany thats also 14, in California its 18. I am generally happy that I live in Germany were we have a justice system that isn't strictly going by the numbers. For example 14 to 16 is a somewhat grey area on this stuff, they can still be deemed to immature for their age. And while adulthood is granted with 18, a 20 year old can still be charged as an adolescent, rather than an adult. So its more nuanced and based on the individual over here. But you have to put up some basic rules based on age. The best example would be voting rights. You would not grant a 5 Year old voting rights, clearly. A 14 Year old, maybe, you can make arguments for that. Most countries go with 18 for the big election and 16 for local ones. But you have to put the border somewhere. With alcohol and drugs in general its the same thing, you would not say a 5 Year old can decide for themselves if they want to drink alcohol or do heroin, obviously and of course that is not what you meant I assume. And at least over here in Germany, you can by light alcohol like beer or whine at the age of 16, hard liquor at 18. But yeah, it does make some sense to restrict at what age someone is deemed mature enough to make that decision. Of course in reality its not so simple as to just put a number on it and it is not fair to every individual, but you have to decide on some border. Could of course just make everything like sex, voting, alcohol, drugs, driving and so on legal at the age of 14. Just to be sure to not infringe on anyones freedom more than absolutely necessary. But I don't think that would be the best course of action.

Especially if its the Law and they very well know it. Its not some unknown little law, everyone knows it and should know that when you are in your 20s, you should carry your ID when buying alcohol. I never understood the problem anyway, its not the only situation where you might have to ID yourself, so I just have it in my wallet anyway, how hard is that to do. So when I am leaving the house I can always ID myself, its not like I constantly loose my wallet.

I once wanted to buy a chopper/knife thing in a chinese supermarket here in Scotland and the girl serving was VERY reluctant to sell it to me, I couldn't understand why as I was about seventy at the time and I don't think I look too hooliganistic although I have to confess I am one of a dangerous group, guys that think they can cook! Anyway, a more senior member of staff OKed the sale, saying I didn't look dangerous, which I found a WEE bit insulting!
