- We spent three days traveling Niigata thanks to the Niigata prefectural government! Our first 24 hours were on Sado Island. The taraibune area with the red bridge is 矢島経島 (Yajima/Kyojima; the name of the two tiny islands connected by the red bridge), and the gold smelting facility ruins are 北沢浮遊選鉱場跡... There's no official English translation for that, but I guess it technically translates to the Kitazawa Froth Flotation Ruins?? That's a very unsexy name, so you could call it the Kitazawa Gold Flotation Ruins, maybe.

I was hoping to be the first to point out what those red flowers were so instead I'll include some extra information about them. They are known by many other names including corpse flower, resurrection flower, equinox flower, red magic lily, hurricane lily, and its scientific name, lycoris radiata. Buddhist monks would plant them in cemeteries to honor the dead hence their more ominous names. They flower in late summer or autumn particularly after heavy rains hence the hurricane lily moniker. They are also associated with signifying the coming of autumn. Because of their association with death, they're not given as gifts. One urban legend says that if they grow along the path after a loved one, you will never see them again. The bulbs of the flowers are poisonous so they are planted around rice fields or Buddhist temples to keep pests and mice out. I first came across them a year and a half ago in South Korea. They are still beautiful flowers and definitely unique.

@@Mr2Reviews Higabanas are very enchanting. They're seen in some anime(the only one I know in which they're seen is Inuyasha's ending credits). There was even a song written about them; Anju's Higabana, which was featured in Fatal Frame 5: Maiden of Black Water. Just some cultural uses of them. ^^

Yes, it does. My Japanese is far from a conversational level yet but even I often cut to Japanese that way when I'm only talking to myself or my fiancee. It especially happens a lot when you internally pick up the nuance of various words and that nuance is different from similar words in your native language. So sometimes using a foreign word will also feel more correct to what you actually mean.

Rachel & Jun's Adventures! The boat you guys went on is called a hydrofoil. The way it works is, the engines are attached to these v shaped fins (called hydrofoils) that are on the bottom side of the boat. As the boad gains speed the fins, because of their shape and angle, will lift the boat out of the water reducing drag and that allows faster speeds. Boats with the fins are also called hydrofoils.

Hi Rachel and Jun! The flowers Rachel at 15:55saw were Lycoris Radiata AKA red spider Lilies. It’s a plant related to onions. The flower and stem are the only parts of the plant visible. When it’s not flowering the plant is dormant. Most species are red, however, I have seem yellow and white varieties. There’s a beautiful Chinese legend surrounding this interesting looking flower. Legend goes that this flower entered our realm of the living from the barrier of the Chinese afterlife Huang Quan. It’s lack of leaves symbolizes the things we leave behind in this life as the flowering stem guides the departed onwards.

its a Hydrofoil Boat - it works basicly like a plane, you got "wings" (hydrofoils) under the ship and when you go fast enough it generates enough lift to push the ship out of the water that way the drag is greatly reduces making the ship quicker and reducing fuel needs at high speed, but at low speed you have more draft as the "wings" are not completly submurged under the normal draft of the ship. also they hav ehte engines (or at least screws) realy low so htey are still fully submerged while "flying".

I’m sorry, but I gotta nerd out over the weird boat you went on!! The boats are called hydrofoils, and they have a flat bottom and a curved top. The general way they work is the water gets separated into two paths: one part goes over the wing on the curved side, and the other part goes under the under the wing, on the flat side. The physics behind this next part are a little weird, and even I don’t have a solid grasp on it yet, but the general idea is that the water particles want to meet up in the same place at the same time, on the other side of the wing. The water on the bottom can go at a normal pace, but the water on top has to move faster in order to make it on time because I has a longer distance to travel. The faster moving water then becomes lighter than the slower moving water, and it rises up. Sorry for the stupid long comment, just something I find cool :D

That's the coolest boat ever! I guess the jet thing underneath kinda balances the body so it doesn't bob up and down so much at that speed. I've tried riding a fast passenger boat under high wave condition and at 24 knots it feels like half the time the boat is speeding under water (super cool). Boats are so awesome XD!
