Living in Brisbane Australia - What we hated and what we loved

I think one of the huge pro's of Brisbane versus Melbourne and (especially) Sydney is the ability to live near the culture despite it having less than those two. I was able to buy a large family home set amongst trees, creeks and nature in inner Brisbane but still be close to the facilities of a large city. In Sydney for example I would live in a boring hot flat suburb many many miles from Sydney city for the same price. All the culture in the world is irrelevant if it isn't easily accessible. This means I can ride my bicycle to work, cycle to museums and city attractions and treat the city and inner surrounds as my place. Rather than a dull outer suburb being my place with long tedious daily commutes. This is of course is still subject to budget, but a lot more doable than the other two. I'm a city person at heart so this is what works for me with a family.

I grew up in Brisbane and left with my family at 14 years old in the year 2000. It has changed dramatically since then and I would never move back. I now live in a small town I. The mid north coast NSW and I love it. Weather is milder, more nature, less traffic, friendlier people, safer, cleaner, commute shorter, cheaper and lifestyle better. I have lived in Melbourne too and I liked the shopping, the boutiques and alleyways of the city and the food but everything else is a con. I’m a small town girl all the way.

I lived in Brisbane for 8 years. Horrible place and people. So glad i left that place and that country. Disrespectful supremacists. They're friendliness is superficial and especially to a person of colour. People just like to paper over the cracks in that dense and controlled society

Just a note, - in relation to Brisbane being cheaper than Melbourne, I have been in Melbourne for just under 2yrs now, & Brisbane is about half the cost of living in every single aspect, - Rent, property prices, transportation, car prices, tolls, traffic & congestion is about 1/10th so you will save A LOT on time & fuel, I think the biggest expense in Brisbane would be the air conditioning bill (electric bill) because you’ll have it on 24/7 for 8 months straight (not a joke) so make sure you have solar 🙂🙌

If you let the water run for a little while it will get cooler (though not cool). Never drink the first bit of water that comes out (in summer). This is particularly true for water fountains in parks.

Originally from western Sydney and moved to Brisbane in 2015 to buy a house and best move we made there is definitely adjustments like heat and that things are slightly less acessable e.g opening hours etc but do not regret our decision

I moved from North Ryde in Sydney in 2013 to the Bayside area in Brisbane, man, its amazing sunset view is just mind-blowing and it never gets old for me and I am still loving every minute of it. If I had remained in Sydney, I'd have been cooped up in a tiny studio somewhere in Paramatta right now. Don't get me wrong, I know Sydney has its Opera House, Harbor Bridge, the Rocks and fancy city shopping areas and everything but to me, Brisbane is just a better place to live in.

@@fullsendit292 I rented for a while in the southern areas of Brisbane after moving here then I moved to the Eastern suburbs and bought a property. IMO, the property price is rising rapidly across the entire southeastern QLD, especially in areas in the south of Brisbane.

I’m the opposite to this. I am from Brisbane and want to move to Melbourne. The times I actually get to experience it, I adore Melbourne’s weather. Cold? Windy? Wet? Miserable? These are all conditions I love. Brisbane is absolutely UNBEARABLE during the summer.

100% agree, although I just got back to melbourne from brisbane 1 year ago... melbourne city is very drab in comparison, zero iconic landmarks here and no local nature whatsoever... & its geographically flat... like VERY flat! (no nature, Just lots of gorgeous parks) everything is a 1hr+ drive (like Geelong, Dandenong Ranges/ YarraValley etc)...Melbourne its a colossal concrete jungle with a frustrating grid type street format & 100 billion traffic lights lol... The temperatures are absolutely amazing down here though, there's no humidity, like ever! And summer exists for 3 days a week over a total of 8 weeks haha! that's why I came here in the first place, but its no Sydney or Brisbane city... prepare the mind for a complete different world living here... (visiting is a different story).

Each suburb doesn't have a large Westfield style shopping mall? Four very large ones around 12-15km out from the CBD. One north, one east, one south, one west. If you live closer to the city people shop in local high streets. The restaurants are often on these high streets and in converted Queenslander homes dotted around the inner suburbs. Some example high streets: Caxton, Given and Latrobe Terraces in Paddington. Nash St, Rosalie. Kedron Brook Road, Wilston. Ashgrove Central and West Ashgrove. Bardon. Everton Park. Alderly. Racecourse Road, Hamilton etc. Coorparoo. South Brisbane. West End. Stones Corner. Bulimba. Hawthorne. Morningside. I agree if you are talking about living in the outer suburbs. That is far more mall based.

In think brisbane need to expand the cbd on the south side as well and bring shopping experince (like modern shopping) on the south side instead just park and mesuem. The media also need to sell things brisbane do well. Not just on the olmpic.

I'd say the lack of high streets and shopping mall prevalence is due to the density of brisbane being low. You only have to go outside of about a 5km radius of the city before highstreets turn into malls which is astonishing.

Loved the video, some of the points were way too relatable IoI. For some of the curious comments, I'd highly recommend going through suburb profiles or driving around if you can, but for a general pov from a brisbaner, in general, the area just south of the CBD has some of the best suburbs (Annerley, West End, HoIIand Park, etc). On the other side, suburbs such as IndooroopiIIy, Sherwood, GraceviIIe and Oxley seem to be popular especially with the train Iine, but do tend to have much more flood prone areas. I personally really Iove the Holland Park /West area since its super cIose to the city, fIood free, has high elevation with city views and good transport network systems. The north is also rapidly growing so there's plenty of great suburbs.

@@vidmeelabs9688 If it's any help, as someone who has lived on all sides, generally the highest socio-economic suburbs in Brisbane are on the westside/northside. Still plenty in the south though. Middle ring South West: Chelmer and Graceville. Middle ring West: St Lucia, Taringa, Chapel Hill, Fig Tree Pocket. Inner West: Toowong, Bardon, Paddington, Ashgrove, Auchenflower. Inner North West: Wilston, The Grange, Newmarket Inner East: Bulimba, Hawthorne Inner North East: Clayfield, Ascot, Hamilton. Inner South: Coorparoo. Inner/Middle South: Highgate Hill, Yeronga, Coorparoo, Norman Park, Holland Park West. Lots of other suburbs are nice. These are just the more expensive fancy ones if budget suits.

i moved to BNE from Mel in 2014. I love it up here, but the CBD in Mel is def nicer, That's one of the few things that BNE can't beat. The yarra is nice as well, pending on what section u go, upper yarra is great. Overall Brisbane is great! I miss trams though. And since I was born in Europe, Mel def has a bit of that feeling, Brisbane def got nothing of that. ... and you get used to the humid and heat, 2 years in average. ( Mel weather sucks) . .. I haven't seen xmas beetles for years up here, I only saw them in SYD when I lived there over 10 years ago. it's only hilly in the west and north west. ( red hill, yes ) , most other areas are flat . so that is overstated. Racism against asians is worse up here. ( or racial bias) . ... and you miss a lot of other advatage of Brissi .... ;-)

Maybe I know what Nick means about the small town mentality. I used to live in Bris for a very long time. It's a friendly and relaxed place with great weather (apart from four or so hot and sweaty months). But if you go to a lot of dinners and BBQs in the suburbs you'll find that the favourite topics of conversations are home renovations, 4x4s, the footy etc. Felt pretty bored towards the end of my time there tbh. But it can make for a nice change for a number of years.

@@TheRenju No it is not dangerous to leave children in the backyard. We see the odd python or green tree snake but they are harmless. As a family with two imports from cold countries, you get used to the nature and often eventually embrace it.

Hi Annie, I think you will enjoy Brisbane. Personally my favourite suburb is West End. Also I like Coorparoo. If you don't have a car it's best to be close to a bus stop 🙂

@@jyotsnatrivedi7647 hi jyotsna, I'm Brisbane born and bred so I know the place backwards. It all depends on what you are looking for as to where you should research to live. The education system here is a mix between public and private schools. As to what type of area to choose to base yourself, it comes down to taste. If you like cooler conditions then the eastern side of Brisbane is the go especially nearer Moreton Bay area as these areas a a few degrees cooler because of the sea breezes. As for house, a north eastern aspect is desired as this will be cooler in summer and warmer in winter. If you go for an apartment, avoid a south or western aspect as you will pay a higher power bill trying to keep cool in summer especially. As for flooding, basically Brisbane is a giant flood plain. Generally we get a major flooding event every 30 years. Some areas are subject to localised flooding during rain events and even during King tides. The local councils to provide accurate flood maps which are worth checking prior to purchasing a property. Hope this help

Hey, advice from Brisbane born and bred is caution on crime rate data- you’ll notice worst crime suburbs are actually attractive suburbs. For example I believe west end appears in top ten but as mentioned in video is a popular suburb. Appears the crims target these nicer liveable suburbs

HOT, HUMID and TOO much SUNSHINE, nothing nice about being in hot weather, i just move here, and after three months, i miss melbourne already.... melbourne has the best weather...NO HUMIDITY, NOT HOT and NOT much SUNSHINE... i do regret i move to brisbane...

Mt Coot-tha is around 6km west of Brisbane. Red Hill/Paddington are in the foothills of Mt Coot-tha as they run down to the city edge. It is a notoriously hilly and beautiful area of Brisbane. The trick in this area is to live along one of the ridge line streets (eg Latrobe Tce) or buy near a local creek that provides a nice flat path along the creek edge to the city.

If you think Brisbane is hot wait until you go to Sydney they get hotter then Brisbane hottest it's reached here is about 41°C whereas Sydney can get to as high as 48°C

Been in Australia for more than 9 years I still can't get used to the big balconies in newly built apartments. I think that's a big waste of space that can actually be moved into the inner side of the property.

Some of the suburbs I liked in Brisbane are Toowong, Camp Hill, Cannon Hill.

Depends if want apartment or house living. Also depends on budget of course. Some very inner examples worth considering: West End/Highgate Hill/South Brisbane including Southbank. New Farm/Teneriffe/Newstead. Paddington including Rosalie. Milton. Kangaroo Point.

Personally I like Camp Hill, West End and Kangaroo Point. Mansfield has great schools and is good for families. Hope you enjoy it up there 😊

There are 400 suburbs and many are great depending on your needs. Any narrowing down without knowing budget, interests, work etc is really hard. Understand you may not want to share those things on this forum but if you can I will try and help.
