Great video! I naturally love it whenever Willow is put under the microscope. However, there a couple things I disagree with. 1) I would have put more emphasis on the difference between the Sears and the clothes that Willow seems to have picked for herself in S1. Willow's style may be initially modest, but it is at the same time loud, quirky and colourful. I would not say her colours are muted at all, especially compared to what Buffy and Cordelia wear. 2) I disagree about the similarities between vampire Willow and Dark Willow. That little bit of colour, shine and extra skin makes all the difference, and these personas express completely different aspects of Willow. And I don't think it is an accident that Willow is the most overtly sexual vampire of the entire show. Willow talks a fair deal about sexual matters. She's very interested in Buffy's love life and she will complain about being sexually frustrated. At the same time, she is quick to use shaming words about herself and other women. Similar to how Spike reinvented himself as a suave lover, vampire Willow was able to become someone who is completely comfortable with her body and her desire, even the homoerotic desire that Willow hasn't yet admitted to herself that she has.

I know I'm a bit late to the party but I'll leave this here anyway; I definitely agree with the idea that the way in which Willow's wardrobe evolves throughout the seasons is reflective of her improved self-esteem, however you appear to be making a general link between revealing and/or trendy clothing and confidence that I disagree with, as revealing clothing does not necessarily equate to confidence just as modest, quirky clothing does not necessarily equate to lack of confidence. I watched Buffy as an extremely insecure highschool freshman; at the time, Willow's wardrobe was my favorite of all, and I, funnily enough, wished I had the confidence to dress like that - even if for her it was signifying lack of confidence. I felt like I would never dare dress in such a colorful quirky fashion that would immediately make me stand out (similarly to Willow, I was quite shy). It is only when I did start to gain confidence a couple of years later that I began dressing in a similar way to her, experimenting with styles that are usually worn by people younger than me: pigtails (think Harley Quinn in Birds Of Prey, not Suicide Squad), white tights, childish accessories. I definitely stood out, but the childishness of my look didn't stem from lack of confidence or maturity, and in fact I got quite a few compliments on my style, because I clearly had one and the confidence to wear it, even if it wasn't the trendy. Since then my sense of style has evolved, and I'm now still in highschool, as a senior, but I no longer have as much interest in that same type of quirky, shapeless, childhood clothing, and I prefer more well-fitted, mature looks. But it's not because I'm any more confident than I was before: the way in which I want to be perceived has simply changed. And that's what important. Some girls want to be perceived as cute, others want to be hot, others still want to be quirky; it's not a one-size-fits-all matter. What matters is that we dress in a way that reflects the way in which we truly want to be perceived, which is different for everyone. A woman who wants to be perceived as conventionally sexy dresses sexily if she has the confidence to do so; dressing in unflattering clothes would reveal lack of confidence as she might not believe she can pull off the sexy look. But dressing sexy can also reveal lack of confidence for a different type of woman, who dresses and presents herself in that way because she feels pressured to and believes that her body and sexuality are all she has to offer. Same goes for wearing trendy clothing. While not wearing trendy clothes can show a lack of confidence and a feeling of not being "cool" enough to dress a certain way, something I have definitely experienced myself, dressing in trendy styles could also mean lack of confidence and lack of trust in your own sense of style. It could simply be conformism out of fear of not having a good enough personal taste or fear of standing out. A sexy and/or trendy wardrobe is not required to exude confidence, and in some cases it is even proof of a lack of confidence instead. It all depends on the woman, and what SHE wants.

Willow is a fictional character from the mind of a man. Therefore, she doesn’t want anything. Why is that relevant? Because she doesn’t have inner thoughts, emotions, desires, etc… she is a representation of type of women (which can be done from well to horrible, but here I think it was done well). The author has to show that developmental from reserved and insure to self assured and confident without outright telling you that happened. How do they do that? With cultural shorthand, in this instance women’s fashion represents to most people. We as society generally agree that the things list in the video translates to a women being confident. That is precisely why loud insecurity often manifests itself as wearing trending or revealing clothing. It’s a means of appropriating an aesthetic that is associated with confidence so they can project a trait they do not in fact have.

I know this comment is from two years ago, but I wanna say I'm so seeing myself in what you wrote! I'm quite a bit older than you, but I remember dressing like my classmates even though I didn't feel comfortable or even cute in those, because dressiing like Willow would make me stand out too much, and on the rare occasions when I tried something different I would be immediately teased and even bullied to the point I rarely even looked at the clothes I really wished to wear when I went shopping. This slowly changed throughout high school, and I started experimenting more. In uni I started wearing more colorful, cute things, braiding my hair, declaring out loud that I liked certain things and laughing with other people who be laughing at me. More years have passed, and I'm now more confident in heels and "mature clothes", but I've finally gotten the confidence to also wear Willow clothes whenever I want, just because I can. I hope you're thriving in your life, sorry for the long ramble and thank you for putting into words something I've felt ever since I first watched the show!
@J_Mock92 Жыл бұрын
Umm, what? Not once did she say that "trendy" or "revealing" clothing equals confidence, so I'm not exactly sure where you're getting that from... She literally says the peak of Willow's style was in season 5, and hardly anything the character wears is "revealing" in any way, and really wasn't particularly "trendy" at the time either. I mean, I get your point, but Willow is a fictional television character from over 20 years ago, and you're viewing this from the lens of a teenager/young adult of today. You weren't even alive when the show aired, and I can absolutely tell you that all of the points made in this video are completely valid. The way that Willow dresses in the first two seasons (circa '97-'98) is literally how CHILDREN were dressed (usually by their parents) at that time. You're conflating "tailored" and "mature" with "revealing" and "trendy," and completely missing the point. She mostly only uses the word "trendy" as a comparison to the way other characters dress (Anya, Cordelia, Buffy), but doesn't ever imply that "trendiness" necessarily equals confidence or is the pinnacle of style. The most positive connotations are associated with Willow's wardrobe when it's her actual size, yet still quirky and less "revealing" or "trendy" for the time, than what other characters with more outgoing personalities wear....

Willow's outfits are the only ones that would have passed a high school dress code in the 90's. The other girls" skirts were always too short or showed too much cleavage. They would have been sent home to change or been told to put on their gym clothes. Most of high school Willow's outfits were cute, even if they were baggy or clashed somewhat. A lot of teenage girls wear baggy clothes for a reason. That look was certainly more obtainable to regular girls in high school at that time than what Cordelia or Buffy wore, which was clothing that was too expensive and too sexy. At that time, most parents would not have let their daughters out the door dressed like that for school, but they would have dressed like Willow. Willow brought the cute hat into fashion for a few years even after she stopped wearing them and she certainly brought back overalls for girls.

I love this video but agree with some of what Willow from Buffy posted. Willow's always dressed quirky and, even though she dresses in baggy attire at first, it still shows her alternative/quirky nature and serves to show how she's different rather than to be invisible as you're not invisible when you dress differently to everyone - you stand out! The difference is that people either leave her alone or pick on her. I'd actually argue that, whilst she doesn't fit in and wants to be left alone, she still won't change her dress sense just to become invisible because it's not her. She stays true to who she is whilst she's discovering that. I agree that Vamp Will is foreshadowing what's to come - being gay and becoming Dark Willow - but I'd say that Vamp Will is enjoying what she's become and sports a sexy red and black outfit, whilst Dark Willow is purely out for revenge and has no red because she's not feeling sexual but grief-stricken and allowing herself to fly off the rails to avenge her girlfriend.

I like will as a character, but the way magic was used both as a representation of queerness and drug addiction is… uh… tone deaf? Misguided? In the earlier seasons, up till season six (in fact even in season six as they use for Andrew and Jonathan) magic heavily represented queerness. They then mixed the metaphor to be drug addiction. This is really tone deaf as that same talking point has been used to attack queer people. That it’s a temptation, a drug, something that you “experiment” with a get dragged into, and ultimately self destructive. This is a shame as BTVS was a great representation and breakthrough for queer people and I’d argue it was the shows largest flaw.
@swordablaze92592 жыл бұрын
@@gamingwhilebroken2355 I see where you're coming from. I'm not actually convinced that her magic was meant to be connected to being gay, though. She started her magic with Oz, only Jonathan of the magic using trio seemed to be gay, and Giles used magic who was straight. Also, whilst Willow lost Tara, she still found Kennedy so I never actually saw the gay part as the addiction - purely the magic. The only issue I had with the gay part was that I wasn't sure if she was actually bi rather than gay. She had feelings for Xander and Oz before falling for Tara, so I wasn't sure if the show handled the labelling well.

I just discovered your channel, and I thoroughly love your videos. This analysis of Willow's outfits throughout the show is so compelling! Her clothes and their evolution really reflect her journey as a character, and you demonstrate it brilliantly. (I'm happy to find such a great essay on one of my favourite characters!) Your essay is as rich as Willow's wardrobe, which is saying something! I hear your analysis of Willow's clothes in the final episode... I have a different opinion, though? To me, Willow's clothes seem to be between beige and light green, indicating a strong association with nature/earth. It reminds me of her exchange with Giles in England (in which she is also wearing brown/greenish tones), in which she explains that everything is connected, and she has understood that magic connects her on a deep level to Earth and nature. I have to watch season 7 in detail again, but in my memories (and some of the extracts in your video), I remember that Willow often wears brown colours at that point. I'll have to observe when she wears lighter or darker colours (btw, she seems to wear dark brown when she performs magic to retrieve Buffy from another dimension and ends up sucking Kennedy and Anya's energy, which I find quite meaningful, especially compared to her last outfit). In the last episode, she wears very light brown tones, which is representative (to me) of her deep connection with nature and her confidence in the lightness of her magic Additionally, the tone is close to skin colour, so it's also associated with Willow's intimacy, her own nature. In that moment, she is raw, "naked", the artifices are stripped away. Plus, uh... The idea of skin tone resonates all the more when you take into account the sexual aspect of the spell. Willow is obviously going through a deeply intimate experience, the scene when she looks up with her hair white looks positively orgasmic, and her attitude afterwards screams post-coital (lying on the floor, panting, deep satisfied sigh, "That was nifty!") I especially adore the evolution of Willow's wardrobe in seasons 3 and 4? I like the fact that it's not linear, but keeps going back and forth between confidence/sexiness and fluffiness. Willow is evolving, but it takes time and experimentations. It seems very real to me. (and oh, my heart every time she has a style associated with magic! Her long red dress with a magical symbol in "Choices" - the episode in which she is kidnapped by the Mayor and is basically super suave while risking her life - screams confidence and self-definition, and I LOVE it!) I feel like it's also important to mention her rainbow sweater in season 4 (A New Man)? At the beginning of the episode, she performs a spell with Tara (the super-orgasmic rose spell). Later, in a discussion with Buffy, she is secretive of where exactly she had been that night, but tells her best friend about the spell which ended up being explosive. All the while wearing a beautiful sweater with a great rainbow (... and colourful stars covering her breasts, now that I think about it). That outfit is absolutely brilliant and I love everything about it. Anyway, enough ramblings about Willow's outfits!! To be honest, I would love to see you analyse the evolution of Willow's hair throughout the show one day? I understand it might be redundant with this essay, though. But wow, I feel there are so many things to say as well! Your video inspired so many thoughts in my mind xD Thank you so much for sharing your compelling analysis!

Willow's outfit in the last scenes of the final episode has at least two layers: a sparkly sequined top that shines through her earth-colored paisly long-sleeve. I think it represents the magic (sparkle) within the natural powers (beige-green paisley) that she uses. Buffy's outfit in the final scenes is beige (although a lighter shade) as well. Both characters have found their balance within this season.

She’s my top favourite character of the show. I actually started to watch Buffy because of her. I even had a dream where we did incantations together ))))

I remember someone used to make huge Blog posts about all the characters on BTVS. Xanga and Blogspot had some really in-depth essays on the meaning, reasoning and background story telling of the costuming per episode. I miss those days!

@Rachel Macdonald, as a long-time "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fan, it makes me so happy to have discovered so many Buffy themed videos on KZbin. I loved your take on Willow's character and personality, being reflected in her clothing choices.

I love the outfit Willow wears from the final scene of Tough Love through to The Gift. The green turtleneck, beige corduroy pants, and brown western-style button down. It's interesting that she's in those earthy colors after performing her darkest magic so far to fight Glory. It's also pretty butch for Willow, which makes sense given how much she takes charge in those eps.

Very interesting and profound. I like the way you search for ordinary-ness beneath the excessive-ness of all the vampires and witches and magic and killing. (I could probably write that sentence better, but this is good enough for now.) I see Willow and Cordelia (n season 1) as two parentheses around Buffy: Willow constantly hiding her breasts, while Cordelia shows them off with both clingy and low cut clothing, while Buffy is right between them, showing her breasts in a sublte way. Yhe relationship between Willow and Tara is profound, because both girls hide their bodies, and wear no or little makeup so they do not seem beautiful.

I feel personally called out when she says Willow's S01 clothes are meant to show she's emotionally immature cause I'm 35 and wish I could dress like that every day 😂. Highschool Willow's wardrobe is iconic! And I don't think she's any less mature than her peers at that stage. It rather reflects the innocent, sunny, childlike side of her personality, which is a nice side, despite the fact that we see her embarrassed by it in her S04-"Restless" nightmare. The embarrassment has to do with how others saw her during her early years (as uncool, nerdy, not a woman yet) and not how she saw herself at the time, when she was pretty comfortable in her skin.
