Had a great time changing the brakes on the Hyundai! It is a pretty straightforward job and if the pads are not worn and grinding, it is most probably just a matter of changing the pads! The rotors were very smooth and had no gouges, so this was just a sample swap out.

Great tutorial. Some suggestions, though you already did it fine. 1) Place the car on a car jack stand. The portable car jack can be unstable and should be used to lift the car onto a car jack stand. 2) Car work gloves keep your hands cleaner. 3) When unscrewing the next screw, do the screw on the other side of the center axle, not adjacent to the screw you just unscrewed. 4) Rubber mallet makes it easier to unscrew the tougher screws with the torque wrench. 5) After brake pads are changed and tire is put back in place. you can lightly step on the tire wrench so the lug nut is more secure.

Great tutorial! One of my favourite book series as a kid was “A Series of Unfortunate Events”. If you’ve never read them, they’re a fun read if you ever get down time. You remind me of the oldest sister of the three main protags, Violet Baudelaire: genius inventor, witty engineer, and a charming brunette to-boot! When I see such talent, intellect, beauty, and humility in one person, it seems almost paradoxical. If I have daughters, I hope they can be the same way. No idea if you read comments, but don’t put the brakes on the many things you’re doing - the sky’s the limit! Big respect from across the pond 🇬🇧 ~

Rachel, it's cool as hell that you're willing to do mechanical work at all. Most people nowadays think work like that is beneath them. There are several things about this job I'd like to point out. The brake rotors should be pulled and machined, even if they don't have any grooves or damage. You really need them to have a freshly machined surface so the new brake pads wear-in properly. At each caliper bolt position are sliding mechanisms that should be taken apart, cleaned, and reassembled with fresh caliper grease and rubber boots. Sometimes you'll need new pins as well, as about half the time you'll find they're scored up and don't slide freely. Lastly, you should really use a proper torque wrench when reassembling the calipers to the spindles, otherwise you're guessing as to how tight the bolts are, and too tight is as bad as not tight enough. This is pretty important on brake, suspension, and engine work. Oh! A couple safety notes! The car's weight should be on a proper jack stand, not the scissor jack the car came with. A good redundant safety measure is to take the wheel you're removed and stick it under the car adjacent to the jack stand. Although extremely unlikely, if the jack stand fails the wheel can prevent the car from crushing any part of you that might be under the car.

You did a fairly good job, but a pad swap is never recommended if anything I would at least recommend cutting the rotors this way you know that the rotors are smooth as can be and you won't feel any vibration when you press the brakes and also doing them in pairs is a good idea. Lubricating the slide pins and replacing the shims are a good idea too. I've had a few times where the slide pins froze, and I had to torch them to release them. JUST TO BE CLEAR I'M NOT HATING this is just friendly advice. I had mention this before, but I was a mechanic for Hyundai for several years so don't think I'm a random dude hating cause I'm not. It's good to see the owners of the vehicles doing the work themselves not matter who you are!

Great work, I would put copper grease on the back of pads (to stop brake squeal, if you get it - although tends not to happen on newer cars with ABS). Definitely check the wear on the brake disc/rotor, this maybe the reason for the uneven wear. Typically minimum wear these days is only 3-4mm from original (on front), because of ABS.

Love the content! Just have a few tips if you aren’t already aware. You should definetly be replacing the pads on both sides when you do one side so they wear and perform evenly. I would also remove the slide pins from the fixed part of the caliper that you’re leaving on the rotor and grease them up to ensure that the sliding piece of the caliper operates properly, this could be why the inside and outside pads are wearing unevenly. Also I’d recommend investing in a torque wrench even a cheap one from amazon or harbor freight to ensure your lug nuts are tight enough as it’s hard to do with the small lug wrench that comes in the car.

One note on the jack -- I would NOT use the scissor jack to do car maintenance, as I have seen them collapse or otherwise just have issues. You can use it to raise the vehicle, but put a stationary jack stand underneath in case the scissor jack fails. Just talking from experience (having to replace a tire and having a scissor jack fail and having to call a tow truck instead).

When you press the brake piston, did the brake fluid overflow from the brake tank? You can prevent this by first sucking up some of the fluid from the brake tank. Be careful, as brake fluid can peel off the paint if it gets on the car body. Also, when tightening the wheel nuts, it is best to tighten them with a torque wrench at 100NM as much as possible. Or, if you tighten them so that you put about 50kg on the tip of the wrench you have on hand, you can tighten them at about 100NM.
@rachelmichellepizzolato
@rachelmichellepizzolato Ай бұрын
If the brakes were full at the factory…and I didn’t add any to the system…Don’t think it should overflow…unless there is air in the lines…Didn’t open the system…So, I should be fine…What do you think?
@okatashiyoniku
@okatashiyoniku Ай бұрын
@@rachelmichellepizzolato If the fluid did not overflow, the amount may have been small to begin with. In any case, it's good that it didn't overflow. When replacing brake pads, it is essential to check the brake tank fluid level first. This is because the fluid will flow back into the tank as much as it pushes the piston back. I hope this skill will become yours.
