I’d never bothered with luxury brands as I was field biologist at the time but 16 years ago my boyfriends’s mother (who was a classy, well dressed woman) bought me a Coach hand bag for my birthday. It looked and felt so luxurious and I thought it was the most beautiful hand bag I had ever seen. I felt so proper and glamorous whenever I used it for formal occasions or going out. Good memories! I still have it to this day and it’s still gorgeous.

I went through the exact same thing with my vintage Gucci lunch box type bag. The inside was BLACK sticky, peeling, junk. It got on EVERYTHING!!! Then I just dunked it in the sink. Hi Rachel, I have always wondered how people did designer bag rehab. Thank you for showing me your process! I’m super impressed with how it turned out. It definitely doesn’t look like the same bad at all! My first designer purse was a Vera Bradley that I bought in the early 90’s (not even sure if Vera is considered designer or luxe). Anyway, I bought one of her mini backpack purses because it was so beautiful with the African safari zebras and it’s perfect for the 80% travel schedule I was on. Its price shocked me, and I was lucky to get it on a 1/2 off sale due to the store’s downsizing. I loved it!

My parents bought me my first Gucci handbag (similar to the small Ophidia bag) for Christmas when I was 13 years old. I sold it 10 years ago and wished I would’ve kept it. Great job on refurbishing this Gucci bag!! It looks gorgeous. I had the same issue trying to remove the sticky stuff over the summer. That stuff got everywhere and I did it outside! I had to wash it several times. I left it as it took forever to remove the sticky stuff & it has three compartments. The only part that is leather is the thick strap but it’s a very unique bag.

THIS WAS SO AWESOME!!! Thank you for bringing us along for the ride...learned soooo much! I restore bags/wallets as a hobby and re-sell them on Poshmark. I learned that patent leather is just a lacquered layer on top of a painted layer and I guess the lacquer on your patent leather interior just broke down. I just bought a COACH wallet where the inside leather is chipping as though it is fatigued foam...I have not ever seen this. Great job on your restoration!! I think you did a fantastic job on rehabbing this bag!!!! Anyone would love to have this to carry year-round! My first "designer bag" was also a Dooney & Burke. I, too, saved up to buy the bag. Mine was black pebble leather with the duck on one side. I was so proud of myself when I could buy that bag - I took it home and my young daughter colored the eye of the duck with a black ink pen! I could have strangled her! lol Years later, I saved again and bought an LV from Neiman Marcus in Dallas. I did not register either bag, and years ago, I gave the LV to my daughter to carry. She carried it for a short while, then stuck it up in her closet unprotected. The leather dried out and there is a tear in the leather on the front of the bag. I've wondered if I could take the bag to a shoe tailor to see if they could sew up the tear, then I could work on rehabbing the leather. I've had the bag 40 years, so it is about to be considered vintage.

It's so sad that so many of the vintage gucci bags are plagued with this cheap sticky lining. I found a *sublime* Tom Ford-era fall/winter 1996 runway bag with gold-toned brass piping. You absolutely do know what you’re doing and you’re learning through a creative process of attempting and trying, which is all you can do! You did an amazing job good for you!!!!. You need to have more confidence because when you’re saying, you don’t know what you’re doing and we’re all watching your video for help how to learn how to do something. It helps to buy into the fact that you’re teaching us something and we’re gonna learn but when you say you can’t, it makes me feel like I can’t and I definitely know that I can try this THATS WHY I CLICKED ON YOUR VIDEO! I just uploaded a video redoing a painting and i think my verbiage was more along those lines. Wording matters, youre right and I don't want mine to sound negative. I tried to teach my kids not to say "can't " and to instead say things like "I'm not able to yet". I have some videos where it's a process I've done before and I feel more confident teaching. This one was definitely us learning together. 💕

Best way to clean a vintage leather bag is a warm bath of Dawn and water using a soft brush. Soak for about 20 mins. Rinse well under cold water. Dry for a couple days using rolled towels inside to keep the bag's shape. Condition the bag after. ❤

Love watching you rehab a bag! Honestly I’m not a designer purse kinda girl, but I have relatives who are and would love the LV vent buttons! I do have a nice leather Jack George’s bag that I thrifted to sell, but decided to keep and use for myself. Nothing fancy but nice quality.

I totally agree with washing it and getting it wet. Leather is very durable and surprisingly resiliant. I have thrown leather bags in the washer...also with the thought of can't make it worse. Good job on your dedication to fix this piece up.

Same here.. 46.... but this year I was at a church sales and a rich lady donated some of her old bags and I got 30 bags... 10 bucks each lol! They are real! And u know what. I'm still using my vintage ralph lauren bag I got off ebay for 90 bucks.. it looks just as good.... not if better than most of them. Even fossil bags feel better than the Gucci bags I got! When I told my family the story..then showed up for Xmas. They thought the bag I was using...my rl one was one from the ladies lot.. ... so goes to show...irs not the brand its the quality

What an amazing job! You gave me hope ( and tools) for my 2-3 Guccis that have deteriorated inside. They were perfect when purchased. I would really like to know what causes this deteriorating on seriously expensive bags. Mine were purchased pre- loved, but still. Thanks for all your tips and tricks.!

I haven't worked with those exact pens but from doing art I thought maybe if you put it down and then instantly dabbed with your finger like blotting and blending it out if that makes sense. I know stains dry super fast so every second counts. Plus the towel probably soaked up any leftovers as opposed to your finger or a glove absorbing less and spreading more. Doing it over huge areas though obviously your finger would be a pain but for smaller faded areas it would help better I think. The bag turned out so pretty and how perfect was it the exact belt you wanted was at the store. Just meant to be.

I think you are doing a great job with this purse but that would have been an outside job because of the sticky stuff. I enjoyed your transformation of the Gucci bag. My first designer bag was a Dooney and Bourke, which I brought about 43 years ago. I didn’t know anything about Dooney and Bourke. I just like the leather style doctor bag. I also brought the bag from Macy’s. I Donated the bag to Goodwill as the handle twisted and I did not know that I could send it back to Dooney and Bourke to get fixed. True story.

This is very cool, I loved your ingenuity, and the little touch that Gucci is still making the same bag but has added a belt to stop the bamboo handles straightening out! I did wonder if you could reshape the handles with hot water, but I'm pretty sure that would destroy the finish and you would have to completely refinish them. So probably better not.

People think designers just got cheap recently, those 80s and 90s bags also had fake leather lining so that's why it's such a mess inside. I think that's fabric with a plastic fake leather coating that's peeling.
