This is Rachmaninoff performing Liszt's marvelous Hungarian Rhapsody number 2. This was recorded when Sergei was 70 years old, before his death.

This is a very personal way of playing Liszt,it sounds like Rachmaninoff like to play this rapsody and that it is not difficult at all! Fantastic after my taste!!!

Actually, Rachmaninoff died a few days before his 70th birthday, which means he recorded this when he was 69 ...

In spite of all the versions I’ve heard of this piece I had to listen it three times in a row to make full sense of his interpretation. Great. A real pity the very poor sound.

the volume of every key press is tuned in a very special way this sounds so good i knew Rachmaninoff wrote complete bangers but i didn't know he played the pieces which were written by Liszt (which i adore and currently consider my favorite) in such a special way im crying as i'm writing this

This is an upright piano right?
@rich8037
@rich8037 Жыл бұрын
Possibly, given it's an acoustic (pre-electric) recording and upright pianos were easier to record, but by 1919 I suspect most labels had moved to grand pianos, which pianists would certainly have preferred.

He was 46 years old and recorded this on an Edison disc. 1919. He then switched a short time later to RCA, with whom he stayed for the rest of his life. Edison generally thought he was too powerful for the piano, believe it or not. That of course is nonesense. A great creative genius.

In my point of view a pianist should have his own interpretation, now days this idea is limited to the very best player's that have the permission to play as they want to, but if someone who didn't gained the respect yet would try, they (teacher's, "expert's") would say thay he need to correct the way he playing

I don't know if there's a way to know for sure (for example a published record label), but I can say this definitely sounds like Rachmaninoff. He had a pretty distinct style of playing, and it's pretty easy to tell when a recording is his (similar to heifetz on the violin).
