Damn, you are the only person that has taken time to put out a video so helpful for beginners like me, so thoughtful and soulful to inspire others to continue learning. I really like to see the process of becoming a great player. As a beginner I wonder if other piano players have the same thoughts and problems while learning and your videos are very reassuring and is great to see how you approach each piece. Brilliant! and very much appreciated.

Josh you're probably numb from reading all of those comments about saying how we're all grateful but I have nothing else to say that you're a jewel to us Pianists that want to learn more and more. I'm immensely joyed that you offer world class advice on playing the piano and always look forward to your new videos. One request though, are there a set of books that you recommend on piano technique? I'm talking about academic level books not beginners. I've been playing the piano semiprofessionally for the past 25 years. Thanks - Kal

I really love your interpretation! Especially for the agitato part. "don't be a metronome"... I think its more beautiful that way. Your 20 minutes lesson helped me more than my hours of lessons for this piece with a university prof. Thanks. I wish all teachers could appreciate the different interpretations.

THIS VIDEO IS JUST GREAT.! As an amateur bass player in a rock band and a completely 'middle of the road' amateur pianist as well, I chose this beautiful piece to be my next project after Scriabin's Opus 2 no 1. Both pieces are far beyond my comfort zone because I can hardly read notes so I have to memorise a lot, but with the help of my wife, who is chief conductor and who inspired me to at least to start trying to read scores in the first place, I can play Scriabin now at a reasonably acceptable level. Your video will certainly help me a lot in my beautiful 'struggle' with this masterpiece of Rach😊 Thanks so much.!

Five or six years ago I would’ve (foolishly) tackled this piece...and I probably could’ve done it technically, but not musically (I somewhat muddled through the g minor prelude around that time). Now I’ve got the 24 Preludes sitting, waiting, on the corner of my piano as motivation. But first... I’m working through Bach’s two and three voice inventions, French Suites, and Partitas. Holy cow...talk about learning voicing! It’s humbling what I didn’t learn earlier on...but now excited how it’s totally changed my playing. Anyway...still have to sneak a peak at the preludes from time to time, hence watching this video. Thanks Josh!

Practice piano 4 hours a day, 7 days a week! - As for the video, thanks for the tips. I have some struggles with that piece I've started learning last december (so 7 months ago). These struggles are just so normal, since I've started piano a year and half from now (and, in fact, not quite... 17 months now!). I'll go check the other video you recommand. :)

My teacher as a child used to do this all the time and it annoyed me so much because 20 minutes later, she would be like, “ok. That’s 30 minutes. Times up. See you next week.” And I would think to myself, “but.. but.. I only played for 5 minutes and you gave an impromptu recital for the rest of my time!!” Lol. I was too young to protest though and so I just stopped going after a while.... I guess she thought she was a KZbin channel before there was KZbin

What a wonderful video, i learned a lot! I especially liked the part where you talked about keeping your hands loose in the free hands video! I'll try to apply that when i practice :) I'm struggling with the really complicated part of the piece, my fingers just don't cooperate! I can play the first 10 seconds of it, but then things get difficult. I haven't gotten around to teaching myself notes yet, let alone any music theory. I watch synthesia and listen to the piece all the time(played by Vladimir Ashkenazi) and try to recreate what i hear. Do you have any quick tips? Unfortunately, i've never played the piano or any other instrument until i started about a year ago when i was moved by Debussy's piece The girl with the flaxen hair and so i taught myself that piece. After that i've been quite obsessed with playing the piano, although i don't own one unfortunately. Luckily there's a 100 year old upright Steinway & Sons piano in the physics building at my university that i can use :) It's just stowed away in some old room beside the lecture hall I attend. I'm 23 now so my shot at being a really good pianist has probably passed by, which is kind of sad.

Eloquent, exquisite and dedicated lecture/video!! I have been practicing this piece for some period of time and this vid will be going to help me for considerable amount! I particularly found it amusing the fact that this vid is not only focusing on technical versatility but also on how to interpret it, that is how to 'think' like an artist and on the beauty of the piece and music general. I totally do agree that we human beings these days became too materialistic and pragmatic and lost the passion/enthusiasm for arts and scholarship after the 20th century. We will need an another Renaissance in our future lol Anyway, great video! I indeed enjoyed it and your humble character. Liked and subed. I hope that I will conquer this piece and hope you all the best!! Sincerely.

In the 5th measure in my 1925 G. Schirmer copy it's an E7 chord with d natural in the left hand octave and yet my ears are hearing E Maj 7 with D# in the left hand octave. Which is correct? I have heard recordings of both.
@toddbebbington73975 жыл бұрын
In all the recordings I have heard it seems to almost always be played as a D#, including those by Rachmaninoff himself. I notice that Ashkenazy plays a D natural.

Hmmm... One of my students found this and I agree with almost everything you say, except... I don't think the triplets should be played that fast to begin with. A lot of my students like to get right to doing the triplets at a 1000mph and end up getting stuck by the 3rd grouping. Ease in to it, then get the cascade going. Just a opinion 😉
