I was in a choir for several years. This was our 'Party Piece' so to speak. In 2007 we were given the chance to sing at mass in St Peters in Rome. We sang this at Communion. We weren't professional singers, just a hobby choir and wondered how we could be heard in such a vast space. But we were standing beneath Michelangelo's dome and every note we sent out bounced back at us magnified a thousand times by the dome. It was an extraordinary experience, which I will rank as one of the best in my life. Thank you Michelangelo and Rachmaninoff.

This does not breathe the Russian soul at all. The broad, profound, and introspective Russian soul is a myth. They only worship aggression, death, and hate. Lucky Rachmaninoff cannot see his nation keep destroying the world even 80 years after his death.

I have sung the All Night Vigil 3 times over the past 20 years, probably my favorite choral work. Of course, the 6th hymn is probably the most famous. It is a thrill to sing this a capella. Apparently, during the time Rachmaninoff's choral works were banned, they created a children's song to the tune. When it was first performed again years later, the audience immediately recognized the piece, having never been attributed to the composer.

Who knows, maybe only Vishnyakov singing low F on this video, but author of this channel should write about another good oktavists. Oktavism is not only about low E, F, and G, it’s more about timbre and profundity of voice.

@@482ginger Yeah, the Russian orthodox are all saints. Why didn't they prevent that last war? They have "always" been the victims of violence. When you live in such a miserable time, you can't do anything but pray ten times harder than the rest of the world. This is a very sad tradition, isn't it? Can you please be proud of Russia without depicting "The West" like you did? Believe me, there are good people in every country. Gospodi pomilui! And some less good people as well. And politics is complicated. These tensions between Russia and the west do not help nobody. And it is not your fault. It is not our fault. What can we do, really? I am Dutch, I live pretty close to Russia. I wish Europe and Russia could finally drop the past and be like good neighbours. Large armies just mean problems, things escalate and you got a war. It's funny, the score doesn't have anything lower than an F2 in it for the basses but ofcourse, as it's russian and there are some VERY low voiced men, this oktavists. My director calls me a "twice baked russian bass" which isn't even close to true, my lowest not a good day is a C#2 lmao. Anyway, went off there for a second but yeah the score only has an F2 in it but sounds even better with the F1 and the score is absolutely gorgeous, Rachmaninoff was an incredible composer.

I’ll be having the pleasure of preforming this at my Christmas concert this year and at a mission. I don’t say it to my choir but this piece is a work of genuine art and I marvel at its composition. This is my last year in high school and the beginning of my music career when I cross that stage and begin a barratone then finding my voice at a tenor makes a tear of joy fall as I listen to this piece.
