While this is a very good way of explaining the importance of driving styles to beginners and amateurs, there's still more to driving style than just one or the other. For the purposes of this video, driving styles were split into two different types: Clean and dirty driving style. What was demonstrated throughout the video was the difference in speed and cornering with each driving style, and which situations one style could be more likely to occur than the other. The basic premise is that a cleaner driving style is faster than a dirtier one, generally providing more accuracy, higher cornering speeds and less probability to crash. I can't sum it up like shown in the video, but it's a good way of outlining to the viewers how much driving style can change how fast or well you drive, or how much you enjoy it. Now here's where my thoughts come in. When it comes to driving style, no two drivers are exactly alike. It's not quite so simple as 'one drives clean and the other not so much' but it's also the smaller things that matter. Throttle control. Braking technique. Steering technique. Ask yourself questions like if your the type of driver to do small slides through a corner? Do you try to encourage slight oversteer? Or understeer? Do you brake late into corners? Do you focus on cornering speeds or exit speeds? All of these things and much much more are what matter for making *your* driving unique, no matter how similar or different. If I were to sum it up then, clean and dirty driving styles are what lay the foundations for a driving style. These foundations can stay the same, or be changed. What matters equally as much is what you build upon it :) - The new guy in the Viperconcept comment section: Jayden HW

Dirty driving works a lot better with cars that have low grip like old road cars and can am cars. Powersliding was their way around the track. Grippier cars like GT3 and open wheel cars need to be driven cleanly. A perfect example of this contrast is how you need to drive a Porsche 917/30 if youre hotlapping versus driving a modern LMP car. Your video was very very good in explaining this, the examples weren't perfect but I can't deny the quality. As always, much love from a loyal subscriber :)

It can also heavily depend on the situation. Even with cars that have slower lap times with dirty driving, it can allow you to get ahead of an opponent and take the lead even though your exit speed isn't ideal, but that doesn't matter if they can't get infront of you anyway. There are also some situations where the opposite can be true.
@mariosx74756 жыл бұрын
I personally prefer the "dirty style" driving. I don't know why you call it dirty since it's as ok as maximum grip style. I can do both but I choose my style based on the game's physics. For example I won't slide a f1 car but I prefer drifting/powersliding a Japanese or muscle car
@MegaFPVFlyer6 жыл бұрын
"Dirty" just means that the tires aren't always 100% planted and you have to be much more erratic on the steering wheel to keep the car stable. It's in no way related to the infamous "dirty driver" that uses cheap tactics to gain an unfair advantage.

On a front wheel drive car you can also try trail braking. It helps lots in inducing oversteer when you first begin to turn in on corners. you have to come in pretty hot though, apply the brakes by gradually adding pressure as you begin to turn, first starting with no brake pressure as you throw the car into the corner( turn in hard like viper did in the video tutorial) and then quickly apply full brake pressure as you begin turning in to the corner( don't lock the brakes, just brake at the maximum threshold. and also you have to ignore the traditional braking point for this technique. simply brake hard as you turn in). Essentially you want to shift the weight of the car to the front tires as you turn in to increase front tire grip to help with turning, and also make the rear lift, to make the car oversteer a bit.
@notdreadyet335 жыл бұрын
That works, but that's not really trail braking. Trail braking is trailing off the brakes. In general, grip cars should have about 80% of their braking done before turn-in, and trail off the last 20% going into the apex. It keeps the car balanced and ready to get back on the throttle. Less trail in open wheel, more in road cars. The first application of the brakes needs to be almost threshold and the hardest part of braking and then start trailing off. It's the exact opposite of how most drive on public roads when they gradually apply brakes. If you're slowly applying brakes to more and more pressure, you're losing a lot of time.
@cihans49234 жыл бұрын
7:25 Tipp for you. You always choose 2nd gear, even if 2nd gear is way too short and has only a few revs left. I know you can choose a lower Gear to destabilize the rear to make the car go around long corners better, but here you always bang rev limiter and loose time. You also don't put into account the torque curve. The M4 is has very Torqueful engine with a lot of mid rev power. So pulling out from 4000 instead of 6500rpm will give you better acceleration out of the corners, since you would have to Shift once more and not use the full potential of you Turbocharger and torque.

It's funny how I discovered this thing while driving in pCARS2 just before your video came out. I thought about it somewhat differently, though - we have the cars that are aggressive (sharp reactions, you could call them "evil") and those that require smoothness (and precision). And to adjust to "smooth" ones after "aggressive" ones you have to drive like granny at first (meaning - no jerky moves, like you drive a boat, not a car), and then going more and more fast, doing all your best to save smoothness and precision. Thanks!
He is totally wrong due to the fact that stock cars not always drive on a completely oval track

Truly one of the best Tutorials I've ever watched viperconcept - and I applaud you as a creator myself, for the way you have put this together. I describe learning sim-racing skills as a "Jigsaw Puzzle" where you might have anywhere from say 10-90% of the pieces in place, and are trying to find those other missing pieces from skilled drivers like yourself. So you just helped put another piece of the puzzle in for me, as I couldn't initially understand why in a contest I entered over 5 weeks - I ranked much higher than usual, when driving the Mazda 787B. But now I understand TOTALLY that it was because I am old enough to have grown up on "DIRTY" driving games like GPLegends & GT Legends (& many others), so I was able to get more out of the 787B, just purely based on that dirty driving-style I grew up with. Thankyou viperconcept, and this is VERY MUCH LIKED!!!

In a fwd car a sharp steering input will cause massive understeer when the speed is a bit too slow. However, if you approach a turn a bit faster than required, the spiky input will help you rotate the car.

This lessons in LFS pyshics are very important and useful, first, the slick tires can heat very fast if the GTR is sliding cuz the huge grip can wear fast the wheels (if i'm not wrong), but in the GTI cars, is a yes/no. Those lessons are awesome. :P
@fatbreadsan6 жыл бұрын
The tyre wear most probably comes from downforce acting on the GTR if I'm not mistaken, since more downforce = higher cornering speed = more stretch of tyre rubber when cornering = more wear. Edit : since sliding would stretch the tyre rubber more than when gripping, it wears the tyres a lot more when there's high downforce acting on the car tyres

Can u talk about Ayrton Senna throttle taps and if it actually works?
@feyt80096 жыл бұрын
ahmed neamah what is it?
@Fuksias6 жыл бұрын
The way i see it, Senna used throttle taps as a way to test his grip and steer his car. Its a very reactive technique that allows for very accurate control on the edge of grip when mastered. If you take someone like Michael Schumacher, his driving was based on doing the same sort of thing, but with the steering instead. Way more common, especially in rally. Neither of these are the best physical way to corner, but the limit reaction time, precision, perception, and some other factors places on drivers means its the best thing we can reliably achieve. cars are also set up around this, meaning Sennas technique wouldn't work as well in a car set up for Schumacher, and vice versa. So its ultimately a game of compromises.
@leadlefthand3 жыл бұрын
Michael Schumacher is a combination of both. He likes a more nervous setup to get the car to rotate at the apex, allowing him to enter a turn and exit the turn at higher speeds. He sacrifices a little on the apex, but the additional speed upon entry and exit makes up for the deficit on the apex. Not to mention, the slowdown at the apex forces the chasing driver to brake harder and lose momentum, making it difficult to set up an attack at the exit, so it is a very offensive and defensive driving style at the same time. Formula 1 cars are extremely stable so the nervous setup isn't that noticeable with the naked eye. However, in 1996 when Ferrari had a massive downforce deficit, Michael's style could more clearly be appreciated. Perhaps the clearest example was his qualifying lap in Argentina when Michael was sliding the Ferrari to get it P2 on Friday qualifying, while his teammate, Eddie Irvine, was further down the grid.

Nice video. The more mechanical and aerodynamic grip a car has, the cleaner your driving style becomes, and it's not because you're consciously trying to drive cleaner, but because with more overall grip the car also becomes more stable thus easier for you to maintain control so your steering naturally becomes less erratic. That's not to say a race car is easier to drive than your Honda Civic, however.
@limeddasch3826 жыл бұрын
To note here. If you want to drift / power slide properly through long corners. Keep the steering wheel at the position at which you had it when you entered the corner, only counter steer if your about to spin or if your getting out of the corner and need to straighten out. That‘s the observation I made driving dirty.
@RallycrossGT4 жыл бұрын
I'm all for sliding. I love Rally and Rallycross. However, there is a time and place for that. Not ever car can slide (as you said) and not every track is suited for that either. I think people who can slide tend to be better drivers as they have more ability to recover the car in case of an incident than people that can't slide. For example, you get mildly pushed in a corner and slide or go too hungry on an outside overtake, you can still drift your way through the corner.

I think I can easily help you out with camber...in the front you want the inside of the tire to be about 10 to 15 degrees F higher than the outside. It is a guess and check and it will change if you change the stiffness of your suspension quite a bit. (but for the most part stays in the same area) As for the rear, I could be wrong but the inside only needs to be a couple degrees hotter, as long as the outside isn't hotter.

I wouldn't exactly put NASCAR Racecars in line with a high grip/downforce car. You actually want that thing to be pretty loose most of the time. Use throttle feathering to turn the car and not so much the wheel (if you know what I mean). You don't exactly want oversteer, just definitely not understeer.

Viperconcept did you notice that the game A.C. recognises that you are slightly pressing the brake while cornering and accelerating(with the BMW M4)? Do you do it on purpose? If yes, why? Doesn't it help spinning the car and lose traction (because you're more or less doing a burnout ), expecially with the oversteer of the M4?
@danielsuarez7866 жыл бұрын
Matteo Zoccatelli perhaps he wanted to slide a bit more, like if you fast-steer in a fwd, but you cannot do it in a rwd, because it would spin with no chance of real control. So you tap the brakes a bit to make front wheels a bit slower while pressing the throttle, rear wheels which are receiving power will be a bit faster and, indeed, slip a bit, but controlled by the driver in a rwd. 🙄 Or maybe the game is messed up😂!

I kind of get the clean/dirty style separation but it's still a bit strange. I always try to drive as clean as possible, no matter if the car tends to oversteer or understeer. Of course if the car doesn't want to turn you have to throw it sideways from time to time but calling it "dirty style" doesn't sound spot on for me.
