You do excellent work. Sorry to blog a bit here, but I'm just so elated that people around the world are teaching the benefits of proper suspension setups. You're on the cutting edge. As a linguistic point of clarification, in the US etc, "free sag" is sometimes called "static sag"; interchangeable terms. What you call "ride height" is called "rider sag". Free Sag + Rider Sag = "Total Sag". In the US etc, "Ride Height" is the distance between the shock's frame mount, and its swing arm mount or lower linkage mount (depending on bike construction). Often this just happens to be the length of the shock from eye to eye. Obviously you have another term for this. Just know that if you're watching or reading Western sourced material, ride height means something different (in Britain "shag" means something totally different than it means in the US). Some stock shocks have ride height adjusters, and most aftermarket shocks have them (usually a nut with lock nut at the base). If your shock does not have an adjuster you can usually add ride height (increase the distance between the frame mount and swing arm / linkage mount) by shimming the upper mount. Ride Height adjustment is used to obtain the correct swing arm angle. Rarely, very rarely, does a bike have too much swing arm angle stock off the showroom floor. They usually do not have enough. For example, the vast majority of riders find the 2008-16 Yamaha R6 handles better with a 5 to 7mm shim or washer stack atop the upper shock mount. This increases the swing arm angle. You can mimmic a ride height change by adding or removing preload because doing so will change where the bike rides in the overall stroke of the shock. If you add preload the bike will spend more time higher in the stroke as if you had increased the shock length. But it will also create other handling issues. Sometimes there is a net benefit. But the real fix is to change the ride height, or the term you have for that.

Great introductory tutorial, particularly the concept that the same preload setting will not work for every rider weight. Next, demonstrate what must be done when you add preload to get the correct "ride height" but in doing so you lose all your "free sag" (it goes to 0mm). Conversely, what to do when you remove preload to get the correct "ride height" but now have too much "free sag".
@vinshinity2 жыл бұрын
When u need to remove the preload to get the right sag you nid a softer spring.
@okboomer12412 жыл бұрын
@@vinshinity Excellent. You're close. To be more precise, when you must remove ALL the preload to get the correct sag you DEFINITELY need a softer spring. Conversely, you definitely need a stiffer spring when you must ADD all the preload to get the correct sag. Ideally you want to achieve the correct sag (30-40mm street, 20-30mm track) somewhere in the middle third of the total adjustable range. This provides plenty of room to adjust preload to rider ability and road conditions based on travel used. Sag is just a place to start the tuning process, not the end. Ultimately, the amount of travel a rider uses determines whether the spring is too stiff or soft. A light rider who brakes hard all the time might use the same fork spring as a heavy rider who coasts more than brakes. The same rider on a liter bike will need a stiffer shock spring than on a single cylinder bike to handle the horse power even if both bikes weigh the same. For street and track day purposes. Pro racing has many other factors that determine spring rate. Sag is never a factor for them.
