Honestly, as an African it is not really the use of our culture by other people that bothers me, it is the portrayal of us that bothers me. People get locs and braids and start acting like they're cool, dangerous, gangsters etc. It's just a hair style but the weight of the image that other people put on black people when they wear our hair and clothes and copy our mannerism is so damaging. I use to be fine with people of other cultures taking inspiration from ours but with every incident like this I become more and more hesitant in accepting it.

I wish black actors in Korea would stop accepting these degrading roles not only that, but they must tell these companies why these roles are inappropriate. I know there are a number of reasons that make these actors desperate enough to play these roles but this is not it. We cannot fight this fight whilst having black people going for these kind of roles. These companies need to be held accountable unfortunately where money is concerned people simply don’t care and it doesn’t help that their main audience has no issues with these kind of things. As for the Penthouse actor🤦🏾‍♀️ he should’ve been the first one to see a problem with his character’s appearance but at the end of the day we really can’t expect people who don’t see us as human beings to have any empathy towards us at all.

As a white, blonde haired, blue eyed woman who has been to Korea (and understands a bit of Korean) I can completely see how I would be advantaged just because of those features in Korea. As soon as I landed the customs people were saying like “omg how can you be so pale”. When I was walking around I would hear older women saying that I was pretty. Men would open doors for me and let me go in front of them in line. If I had a different skin tone, hair color, and skin color I doubt I would’ve been treated like that because I was wearing a mask the whole time. (Basically meaning they couldn’t even really see my face)

As a KPOP fan and follower of Korean Culture - I can tell you all that black culture has been in South Korea for almost 40 years . Groups like SES were wearing braids in the 90s as were any group that rapped - they wore dreads also. Many of the early producers actually lived or worked in the USA in the 90s - thats why they speak English - how d you all think BTS ended up in the USA fir American Hustle Life . So I can tell you absolutely no one is ignorant even kids and the elderly. I have talked with koreans in their 20- 90s and they know about black culture they just chose to act ignorant at certian times . If we were in the 1980s you could say people have ignorance but KPOP was born out of black culture - so no one should be acting brand new. decades and decades after you have embraced a culture.

Tell sis. I'm half Black and Korean and I can tell you this is all true. Granted not all Koreans are this ignorant but it definitely goes on. They love everything about us except us. I'm Nigerian, still living in Nigeria, and it pains me that ppl would be like "go to Africa they won't say it's CA to you" and I'm like you know why we won't. It's cause we can do these hairstyles anytime we want and even here we aren't still exempt from discrimination ( e.g it wasn't until recently that people could do dreadlocks comfortably in Nigeria, even men making their hair is still frowned upon though I'm happy more guys are doing it). @@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 I don't know if there are articles written but where I stay/from experience people look at some hairstyles weirdly e.g my sister and I did thread hair( it comes off look sort of like tree branches but bent) and people were telling me how I do odd hairstyles and my sister who is a law student was complimented but told she wouldn't be able to wear the hair in court. Even in secondary schools we are told to shave our hair for whatever reason ( in boarding schools not only in Nigeria but I also heard Ghana too) but other non-black persons can still carry their hair 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ Like I said it may be different as it's my personal experience/what I've heard and some of what I've experienced may seem like it's not discrimination but to me and my sister and I'm guessing a bunch of other ppl we should be allowed to do what we want with our hair without being seen as "weird" or not "professional" enough to be worn.

Not too long ago, a video was recommended to me by KZbin. It was an Asian Boss video and it was a news report about the #CancelKorea hashtag and about TikTok star Bella Poarche. Bella, a Filipina-American, got into some controversy because of a tattoo.Koreans thought it was a tattoo of the Japanese Naval Battle Flag. Well anyway, there were comments by Koreans. I'm from Bali. Cornrow (kepang kelabang) and dreadlocks (gimbal) is really common here especially around the Kuta beach even there are people offering you back to back on the street. It has been a huge part of tourism. Sadly we don't give black people the credit they deserve. I don't think that us Balinese even realise cornrow belongs to black people. I’m honestly surprised about everything. Penthouse was so popular and I’m surprised I haven’t heard about this before (I never watched it) but it’s specific use of black people only for violent scenes just shows how Korea views black people although it’s abundant use of our culture. That actor knew his character had dreads to depict him as violent he just wanted to save face and not get fired. Lana (the matrix sister) is known for being racist too so the fact she’s getting credit for black hairstyles is infuriating and exactly the reason why other races can’t wear black hairstyles, because it ends up just being a “style” and credit is given to everyone BUT black people. First thing I would love to say is Adeola babes YOU NEVER MISS! Thank you for shedding light on the issues in Korea when it comes to the black stereotypes and blatant offense and racism. I am American and I hate how Americans also treat Asian people at times but there are CLEAR times when you can see A LOTTTTT OF ANTI-BLACKNESS within the Asian community and people stay DEFENDING them like whaaa. I need to wake yall up and clarify how this mindset is NEVER okay and why the history of AA people in the entertainment industry still proves it to be racist and anti-black until today. There is no excuse and I am tired of not just America but even FORIEGN countries displaying black people as MEAN, THUGS, AGGRESSIVE, and DUMB! It is SICKENING. Even in the video as you showed white people being used for parts of appraisal compared to AA ppl being used for parts of calamities and hardship infliction on people really threw me off so bad. Now, real quick I want to give a history lesson. I don’t think a lot of you ever learned about the time of AA history called “Minstrelsy”. Basically, “The Minstrel Show was an American form of racist entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by mostly white people in make-up or blackface for the purpose of playing the role of black people... Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, and happy-go-lucky.” Do yall see where I am heading with this? Do you notice a pattern of clear stereotypes we even see until now….. Another VALID AND SEPARATE point I wanna make…again the people saying “they wanted the money” (I find this to be no excuses) and the only valid excuse will be the time when the era of entertainment was shedding light on the black community but not in the light you’d want for yourself. In a specific point of time LATER ON from the minstrel era, there was an era of lessening opportunities for black people who struggled for jobs. The only way AA people found financial stability was either being some type of lesser paid individual or getting into the industry of entertainment but there was a catch for being in the entertainment industry. Basically, black people were used in DEGRADING ROLES ON TV (like only being allowed to portray maids, butlers, or anything domestic for women and as for men, basically laboring roles..NOTHING to MAIN focused if you understand) to entertain the WHITE AUDIENCES. As we know these are NOT shameful jobs however at such a time period these jobs were not “highly favored” in terms of MONEY… I mean even now I do not think people want to be maids or whatever the case may be if they could find HIGHER FINANCIAL STABILITY comfortably. But these, of course, were the entertainment roles AA were mostly granted at that time. I am talking about AA roles that had to be filled with said jobs to make it known AA people could never have a “BETTER THAN” job if you get what I’m saying. Also, stuff like this kept the mindset alive that yt ppl thought they were better than blk ppl even FICTIONALLY.... (THIS ONCE AGAIN IS THE ONLY EXCUSE in my opinion because at such a HARD TIME) these AA ppl in that industry literally had NO CHOICE and HAD TO MAKE ENDS MEET since JOB OPPORTUNITIES WERE MUCH MORE SCARCE AND LIMITED FOR AA PPL….UNLIKE TODAY! I know this video is talking about Asian Anti-Blackness but I wanted to give notice to the history of WHY the way black people are portrayed on TV negatively will NEVER be okay! Non black celebs have the option to say no when it comes to doing something racist or cultural appropriation. People always defend the cultural appropriation of black people by saying that other cultures have had locs and braids for centuries to. Granted, there is historical truth to this. Some Asian cultures, Indigenous cultures, white cultures and so on all have people whom have locked hair and braided hair. However, if you look at the styles, they don't look.anything like the styles often appropriated. Now. I dont really have a problem with people wearing black hairstyles. South Korea had made a film about the Somali War and they end up make my people look like barbaric and savage. The Somali war very devastated because some many people haven’t seen the families in years. My mother had a chance to finally meet her family again in over 20 years. They kept in contact within those years. My father hasn’t went back to Somalia in a long time but the good thing about my father situation was we had family here in America but it still didn’t feel it was home to him. During the war my father was help people get to Kenya for safety and he end up getting hurt. Many people have said it was based on a true story not actually know how heartbreaking it was for so many Somali people. We have told them to not make this film because we knew what they were going to portray us as. The film end being a box office hit they many millions of dollars of this film. We were right about the film and how they were going to portray us and now we are left hurt. Even though it was based on a real story this didn’t effect South Korea history. It the fact they left and my people still suffered in the end. Knowing South Korea and how they view black people and only take white media that based on white supremacy and imperialism. I knew that they wouldn’t care if they hurt another community. I could literally use the issue with snowdrop and how they voiced their feelings about this drama and how it was disrespectful to people who endured the pain and torture that was happening in the 1980s, because the people were still alive. They do not care for anyone because I have many relatives who live through the war and many other people who have been tortured and killed. It breaks my heart to see this. Last thing I’m gonna say is for every mediato stop making war films it is extremely insensitive and disingenuous. You are not speaking for the people who have been hurt by this and if you actually wanted to talk about the wars make a FUCKING DOCUMENTARY.
