What I really noticed was that the reason why Namjoon used the black hairstyles was to look more aggressive and furious. Black hairstyles aren't meant to give off that look. SO many cultures have taken a glance at black culture and then identify it as something "ghetto" or "aggressive". It's honestly sad. I don't wear braids to look like that, I wear braids because it protects my hair and makes it easy to manage. So when people identity our culture that way it's really upsetting.

Being Asian myself, the comments that BTS have said in the past is nothing new unfortunately. In most Asian culture, tanned/dark skin was seen as “ugly” and has been labeled as the “lower class people”. My family and relatives have make these types of comments towards me and other people within our family members and friends, commenting on skin tone, style, language, etc. My mom always commented on my skin, saying I was getting darker and darker. I was even given bleaching soap to brighten my skin. I got into BTS recently this year, and I have notice plenty comments and styles have done that involved colorist/racist/appropriating remarks. I’m not too sure where to stay in this situation, but I am glad this video is out to educate those who need to see the problem when incorporating Black culture into music/style within the KPop industry. I just genuinely hope BTS can somehow open up to this situation and take fault of their mistakes and comments.

i think most ppl are misunderstanding the point of this vid. Their (sorry idk the uploader's pronouns) intention wasnt to make ppl dislike, hate, or unstan BTS as a whole. I, myself, don't even know half of these problematic actions that theyve done, which says alot abt our fandom's skills at sweeping stuff under the rug. I love bts with my whole heart bcoz theyve helped me mentally and emotionally, and joon is like my main bias, and I am aware of the offenses he has done in the past, but not his other actions, so this vid is actually a great way for non-black stans to be fully educated on something theyve always been ignoring. And it sucks becoz they tend to ignore these actions in order to promote this sort of "perfect," "woke," and "intellectual" image on BTS, when clearly, theyve done soooooo much crap too, yet that doesnt necessarily take away their impact and artistry towards the world. There is so much more than kpop and sitting one's ass all day defending racism disguised as ignorance. Im a poc, and tbh, our schools dont really educate us abt black culture, but that shouldnt prevent one from trying to research and educate themselves. BTS arent bad people, bcoz they clearly have respect for their fans and artistry, but those arent enough to mask their problematic wrongdoings. Stan bts, but make sure to hold them accountable everytime they screw up. It shouldnt be that difficult to protect and stand up for black people, if u ignore the problem instead, its time 2 do some self evaluation lmao Oh and to add up, stan twt needs to stop using these conflicts as a vehicle to promote which is group is more problematic than the other. Like some of yall really dont care abt black people and just want to take these as chances to further stir up more conflicts instead of properly educating each other and its all fucking sickening.

Idk why but I feel like BTS will never apologize for this, whenever someone tries to talk about this, many armys just show up to call that person a hater and give some stupid excuses saying Namjoon already apologized, every human makes mistakes so we should just forgive them and many other stuffs, like seriously?? I know every human makes mistakes but what's wrong in accepting and apologizing for that mistake?? And BTS weren't 10 y/o old kids with absolutely no idea when they did these shamfull stuffs, they kept reapeating the same mistakes so many times and still some fans think they didn't had any idea The media and fans shows them as perfect people, fans treat them like gods so very few amount of people know about this side of BTS, these fans are seriously experts at hiding their idol's fault and defending them blindly And it's sad to know that some armys in this comment section are just pretending to accept their idols fault but in reality they don't even care about this!

When you admire someone so much its blinding and sad because I've seen that clip with Jimin "roasting" RM saying he looks like a Maori chief. And my first reaction was "oh my god, he knows what Maori is that's so cool" but now its like "oh, that's what he meant." It's like a wake up call. It's infuriating when your culture and people are being disrespected especially when it's for the skin tone you wear.

I know Korea is very ignorant towards black people and not to mention colourist because the desired skin tone is pale white BTS grew up around those same exposers yes they are coming it America more often and going travelling but the world is just unfair and cruel to us especially on how we’re portrayed and I know BTS isn’t perfect, their humans but it’s still sad to see how dismissive(if this is the right word to use) they still are, but thank you so much for making this video and bringing light to this and I know that black army’s have a running joke that Namjoon is a “black man” and all but it doesn’t excuse his and the rest of bts ignorance

You gotta give it to their PR team because when you Google “BTS racism” all you see are articles upon articles about how they donated to BLM, how they have been discriminated against (which needed to be covered but that’s not the point of this post). Also nothing about the Jim Jones thing that happened! Kinda makes you skeptical about the rationale behind them donating to BLM doesn’t it? I just saw an article calling out their brother group Enhypen for saying the n word, and I wonder if it’s only a matter of time until BTS is called out but I’m sure they’ll be protected tbh 🙄 I just want a direct apology, none of this “oh I’ve said stuff in the past that wasn’t okay “.
@delauraarts19983 жыл бұрын
I thought about the donation to BLM and how anyone can easily donate to a cause while still offending it at the same time. On Twitter people would say ‘’they have nothing to apologize for since they donated tons of money to BLM’’ its like degrading and insulting someone is ok if you give them money later on 😐. I just want to see a video of them pointing out what they’ve done in the past to acknowledge every situation and apologize for it because having big hit type a message doesn’t show the whole group has learned from their blatant racism. For now idk if i can really listen to them and support them

I've been into Kpop for about a year and it's sad that black Kpop fans can't enjoy something without one of their favorite groups or idols doing something wrong. I been knew about BTS and their past just by the research I have done but gave them a chance because I do enjoy their music and like their personalities. Do I feel BTS has changed like ARMYs love to claim? No. Now that they are bigger, they have to watch their words and be more careful. My main issue is with the fandom because they love to attack other groups for being problematic or racist yet let someone call out BTS on their shitty past, they will make excuses and sweep it under the rug. They want to act like BTS is woke when none of these Kpop groups are woke. I see it on Twitter and even on KZbin and it's annoying. The reality is that Kpop as a whole is very problematic and fans love to pick and choose on who's more problematic and who gets a pass. That's why I just tune in for the music because none of the groups we like are innocent. Sad but true.
@candice66124 жыл бұрын
This is how I feel too... I love BTS but man I cringe so hard seeing these clips or even watching their older MVs. I knew about the bulk of these things. They do a lot of good and I give people the space to learn and grow but that doesn't mean I'll say they're perfect unproblematic kings, they're human and humans make mistakes. I'm sure they're all genuinely sweet people who have good hearts but they can make mistakes just like anyone else. Calling them out for something doesn't mean you hate them... I love so many Kpop groups but I'm getting sick of the cycle of do the problematic thing then apologize. I can forgive some ignorance of course, I don't know everything about every culture but when people from that culture speak up - LISTEN TO THEM!! This isn't a Kpop only thing either, I'm living in the US and we do it here too... it happens everywhere it really needs to stop.

A lot of the comments here pretty much sum up exactly how I feel about cultural appropriation in general. When I got into BTS I created a Twitter fan account for the purpose of interacting with other African armies, and even joined several group chats on WhatsApp. But as time went on and conversations progressed, I noticed a lot of armies raising the flag of "cancellation" when a K-pop group does something disrespectful or insensitive towards another culture, but when it's BTS the excuses and blame shifting start pouring: It's not the boys' fault, their companies made them do it, it happened long ago and they apologized... Stuff like that. And if someone even dares disagree with the apologists mass they are getting cancelled too. I get that Armies and BTS went through a lot together, and more often than not the band received and is still receiving unwarranted hate, but when it comes to other cultures, when we raise our concerns it isn't to bash, and compromise their careers in any way. It is to make them aware of what is the problem, why it's a problem and why it should be resolved. If anything them acknowledging the issue raised, apologizing and genuinely getting educated towards the issue and make changes, is just gonna benefit them in the long run. And by apologizing I mean recognise what is it that you did wrong and express how sorry you are for it. It may just be my view, but most apologies first of all come from the companies (which just dissociates the perpetrator from the offence), and secondly when it's the member apologizing it is pretty vague, meanwhile the offense that happened was specific. Lastly to people of colour or people from the culture that was appropriated: just because you as an individual see nothing wrong with it, doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with it.

I literally just became an army a month and a half ago but will be temporarily retiring that title because as a black person my first concern is my people and you’re right, when no ones holding them accountable and GENUINE apologies haven’t been given it’s very disheartening to see. I was really under the impression that they were different, but I shouldn’t have expected so much.
@elizabethangel79474 жыл бұрын
As a new army this is disheartening nd I feel like if ARMY truly love them then they should hold them accountable instead of making excuses. Them being held accountable is the only way the K-pop industry can be educated on this things, as a worldwide sensation they should really not have this thinking. For the black ARMY u should not be part of those making excuses for their wrong doing, our skin is beautiful nd we should not be receiving insults from the same people who use our music, style nd culture.

@@niamcmillan5006 I'm still an ARMY, but now that I've seen this I have to keep it in mind. I do see a lot of ARMYs defending them, especially Namjoon, but I think that some of us should speak out about this topic sometimes and really explain why it's a problem. We can still love the boys, but we need to hold them accountable for their mistakes.

@@clarajones9476 it’s extremely common in K-Pop due to Korean beauty standards and the country being over 90% ethnically Korean; it happened A LOT to Kai from EXO and pretty much everyone poked fun at it in his immediate circle, including my faves Taemin and Key from SHINee. It’s incredibly frustrating. But yeah, none of these moments surprise me.
@soniaarias51192 жыл бұрын
People in Asia (specially East Asia) are extremely colourist. Even if the person is slightly tanned, they would come and make fun of them. The worst part is that i can't blame bts in the beggining cuz they grew up in this awful social environment (not only about the skin tone but also fat shaming). That doesn't mean that it's okay, they have to educate themselves more and apologize for their past actions. I grew up in a country with similar believes and i did some sh't without knowing it but i educated myself. I know it's hard to identify sth that it's so deep in your culture but It's extremely necessary.

I’m black American, these things were shocking to hear about BTS. I would hate to be born in a homogenous country that only shows the bad stereotypes of black people or any other race other than their own. The saddest thing is the colorism they have among their own people.....even with a tan they are still not as dark as a caramel, brown skinned person. It’s really sad & weird to me that this definition of “dark” “black” is a tan bc they all are around the same skin tone either way in my opinion. Western - “I need a tan” Eastern - “I need to stay out the sun” As smart as RM is & how much he reads. As smart as all of them are they should really educate themselves especially when traveling to different countries. Read more into colorism, racism as they continue to grow. They all really look up to & admire RM (Namjoon) so hopefully he can shed light on his mistakes & the importance of this.
@rowenla4 жыл бұрын
Korean skin stones can actually be quite dark. But in Korea ALL the photos and videos are filtered so that they look lighter, because colorism is such a s serious issue. Go and Google pictures of V without the whitewashed filters and you will see he is super dark.

American Hustle Life was so cringe, especially the beginning. This is very educating and eye opening to someone like me who is white. It's a good reminder that BTS aren't perfect human beings and that they still have a lot to learn and improve on(and their fans of course). I hope that things that happen like this in the future that they are held accountable. And that fans will come together and point it out to them instead of arguing about it.
