MY BOUNDARIES (IMPORTANT)
stop asking me to make videos about ever after high. same with the winx club. no ifs, ands, or buts about it. i have said numerous times i dont care to watch, so quit trying to change my mind.
i make it clear what my niche is. literally say what it is in the beginning of my videos: nostalgia, family, and children’s entertainment. When i say nostalgia, that means nothing in the older demographic past the year of 2015 (because that is nostalgic for me)
so stop asking me to review these live action teen series on netflix like ginny and georgia, outer banks, and never have a ever.
yes, every once and a while i talk about something outside of my niche if i really want to, but i mainly put that content on my patreon.
i don’t do this all the time because i don't want to take away from the focus on my channel. like i did when i talked about don't toy with me miss nagatoro, and when cassie howard pissed me off and i included her in that white women tears videos. when i make these videos you guys keep getting on me to talk about things outside my niche.
and no, i will not make a second channel to talk about these things.
im going to stop putting these videos out publicly all together and just put them on patreon if you guys wont understand that.
if i have a video that is patreon only and you tell me to post it publicity on youtube, you’re blocked.

@@harriyanna the musical made him even scarier through two things: 1) It made him a priest again, which add another layer to his evilness as we don’t know if he has the chance to change or indulge in the hidden monster underneath his shell. The brilliance is that we believe he’s a semi okay guy at first, but he then become the evil bastard we know by the end. 2) He’s Quasimodo’s biological uncle. It leaves room to interpretation over whether he genuinely cares for our boyo.

Frollo terrified me as a child. Hellfire is one of those songs that stick to me because it shows how messed up he really is when it comes to his hatred/lustful desire for Esmeralda. What’s even more terrifying is the fact there are people like him out in the real world. This movie serves as an example of how Disney was willing to take risk when it comes to dark themes back in the day.

Also, as a side note, Frollo was originally the Esmeralda in the beginning of the movie but the book had him being corrupted by Esmeralda into what we see in the Disney film. I tried reading the book, at least one of the versions of it but the language was too confusing and too boring to follow. There is a sequel to the Hunchback of Notre Dome, in it, Esmeralda and her husband have a son named Zephyr. Problem with him is that he's like a clone of his dad, down to his very skin tone. It feels like Disney was erasing biracial kids from it's media or at least not including them as much. There was the trope about the new character pretty much taking the reigns from Quasimoto, even though he's more qualified to be climbing all over the church and bells like Tarzan while she was just the main love interest.

I actually like that Esmeralda didn’t get with Quasi, if they did it would have perpetuated the nice guy syndrome. Too many men see being nice to a woman as a precursor to her being a reward. She treated him like a human and a friend and that was valuable to him, she accepted him and that matters more, he realized that. That mattered more than him wanting her in that way. Him overcoming his abusive parent’s control and being accepted by society was more important than dating Esmeralda and I feel like that’s way more of a good lesson to teach boys who look like Quasi. I think it showed romance doesn’t equal validation. Plus Phoebus and Esmeralda were flirting the whole time, the chemistry was there imo lol Anyway I love that this video just came out cause I was just obsessing over this movie again and you uploading this was such good timing 💜💜💜💜💜 I love how deep you dug into the politics of Hunchback of Notre Dame

Hell…Esmeralda was the first time I ever get to see someone like me on screen. in my opinion, Tadashi being "gone" is an intentional choice of language rather than trying to dance around the fact that he's dead. Hiro learns throughout the series that Tadashi being dead doesn't erase his existence and impact. The episode "Legacies" expands on this idea, for instance.

The reason we don't get villains like Frollo anymore is because people want their villains to be morally gray, complex, and sympathetic who can be redeemed in the end, as good and evil doesn't really exist (they're just following the system they're placed into).
@naomistarlight6178
@naomistarlight6178 2 жыл бұрын
The main problem with that is there are evil people acting as the leaders and driving forces behind evil that exists in the real world, and sometimes they're not all sympathetic. It drives me mad that they wanted a redemption arc for Cruella DeVille with their live action movie, wanted to make her more sympathetic - she's a puppy murderer! She didn't have to become a sympathetic saintly figure! Sometimes it's more fun and funnier if someone is just flat-out evil. Sometimes your villain will fall like a rock into lava and you don't want to feel bad about that; you want to feel good.
@PlanetZoidstar
@PlanetZoidstar 2 жыл бұрын
It'd say there's some moral grayness to Frollo, since he is in deep denial that he is at fault or that he's done wrong. That's what happens when you're raised in a deeply religious society that fetishises Sin like Catholicism does. His only defense against his own culturally-ingrained Sin is to blame Esmerelda, because his religion tells him to deny all mortal pleasures and desires. Frollo is both the villain and the victim, had he grown up in a less religiously oppressive time and taken another profession he may have not become a vicious monster.

Really enjoyed this video, I love watching dissections of older Disney films! Here's a few thoughts: -I actually totally forgot that Quasi's mother was also Rroma, and now that you mention it there could've been other interesting takes on intersectionality in this film -I also like the idea of reusing the talking gargoyle concept for Beauty and the Beast. The Beast's castle already has gargoyles as decorations, why not make them enchanted too? -I actually disagree that Esmeralda didn't fall in love with Quasi because of his looks, I really think it's because some people are better suited as friends and as such will never catch those feelings. And the fact that Quasi accepts her choosing Phoebus is another example of how he's a much better person than Frollo. -Like many people, I'm also kinda sick of Disney's twist villain trend, and I agree that several of them feel lazy. With that said tho, I think King Candy was an alright first attempt; I at least appreciate how the film misleads the audience in different directions before revealing the final twist -I remember seeing video commentary from the heads of Hunchback's production stating that no one really knew how to market it properly, because the end product was so different from what the audience was used to seeing. And to this day, the repercussions of upholding Disney's family-friendly brand and having to self-censor are still felt, like you said. I also remember reading a story about Walt Disney himself, wherein after he watched (edit) To Kill A Mockingbird, he lamented the fact that he'll never make a film like that, because his company's brand became that immovable.

I really don’t like when people say esmeralda should have been with Quasimodo. She didn’t get together with him because of his appearance, but because he and Frollo were two extremes as to how they saw her. Quasimodo saw Esmeralda as an Angel, as Heaven’s light. He put her on a pedestal where she was divine and capable of no wrong. Frollo saw her as a seductress from hell, as a temptation. He saw himself as so much higher than her and used his power to try to force her to be his. Phoebus saw Esmeralda as human. He saw that she was flawed and that while she was capable of great things, it’s also apparent that she’s tired of always fighting. Phoebus saw her as Esmeralda, not an Angel or a temptation. This has been my favorite Disney movie since it came out because it didn’t shy away from the themes of racism and predatory desire. I was only 9 when it came out so the latter didn’t hit the way it does now but I definitely noticed the racism and ableism. I love the overall message: _”What makes a monster and what makes a man?”_

I remember the scene where Frollo literally has an entire musical sequence where he is singing about it his lust for Esmerelda, he is literally rubbing her scarf against himself while rage singing about how much he wants her, and if she doesn't go with him he will essentially unalive her, that is a very significant scene in this movie on how they did the story, like other comments say in this thread, this is a kind of man that exists in real life, he doesn't have magic but he has power, and he uses that power to enact what he views in his mind as just when in reality he is going out and doing abhorrent acts. Frollo in the Disney movie is a terrifying human being who also in the beginning of the movie was going to unalive a literal baby, Quasi as a literal infant by throwing him in a well until the pastor came and stopped him.

There's actually a fan-edit that completely removes the gargoyles from the movie (or at least all their "alive" parts). I cannot find it on KZbin anymore but I'm sure if you look up "Hunchback no gargoyles edit" you can find it. Then the movie'll probably be perfect for ya.

Was I the only one who assumed that Quasimodo was adopted? He has pale skin, red hair, and green eyes. Those are usually found in irish people. In the middle ages people in Europe (but mostly in ireland) thought that if ur baby was deformed it was an evil fairy/troll that switched ur baby for their baby. So maybe the romani found him in the middle of nowhere and adopted him. (I mean, when he was a baby the man/father called him an "it" I dont care how ur child comes out, but u don't call them an "it") or who knows, maybe u r right and he is a white romani. There r white Latinos, so maybe there r white romanis?... Maybe? But that's my perspective and it's been a while since I've seen the film

one of his parents might have carried a recessive red hair gene (this was also seen as bad in that time period, i believe), or he was abandoned by his real parents and the woman took him in, but the man didn't want him. there is also the much darker alternative that quasi is the woman's son, but his father was a white man who felt the same way towards her as frollo towards esmeralda. in the musical, his father, frollo's brother jehan, fell in love with a romani sex worker, which frollo disapproved, and quasimodo was born of this union. they both passed away due to sweating sickness, i believe.

In addition to the corruption of the Catholic Church and the manipulation of Quasimodo, it’s important to point out the fact that Frollo wasn’t just racist towards the Gypsies but very much of the misogynistic attitude that Frollo believed that because he wanted Esmeralda, he deserved her not because he had any respect for her mind or courage but because he thought he would be able to break her of that spirit.

I feel like no other Disney movie has as much overt religion in it, which makes it edgier and cooler to me. In Encanto, it kind of felt like a weird Latin American family that they didn't have saint candles, they mention churches but never show the family participating in church services, and nobody wears a cross though if they wanted to be 100% culturally authentic, Catholicism should play a big role in the life of a traditional Colombian family. And they have no indication in the movie that the family is non-religious for any specified reason. It's just swept under the rug, so it's a world where we have prayer and miraculous candles, but you're not supposed to think too hard about where miracles come from.
@imthebossmermaid3648
@imthebossmermaid3648 Жыл бұрын
I find that cool as well. I wonder why Encanto wasn’t religious as much as well, but then again, I think it was because they relied more on the miracle’s blessings than the religious blessings? Idk I may be wrong though. Or maybe they just didn’t have enough time in the movie to show it. And I do wonder where the magic comes from.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is in my top three Disney movies. I loved it when it first came out when I was a kid and I still love it now. Esmeralda is still my favorite Disney character. The beautiful music (God Help the Outcasts is my favorite Disney song to this day), the gorgeous scenery, the gothic atmosphere, phenomenal animation, I love it all. Frollo, in my opinion, is the best and scariest Disney villain due to the fact he is the most realistic, and people like him have existed throughout history. Yet even though he's wicked, hurting thousands of innocent people, he honestly believes he is doing what's right in his mind, which makes him even scarier. Hellfire is, in my opinion, the best Disney villain song. The fact that he views Esmeralda as beneath him, but is still obsessed with her as an object to possess makes him disgusting (the hair sniffing scene 🤮). I like that this movie didn't hold back with the atrocities Frollo committed, as well as the regular people (as seen when they torture Quasimodo simply for being conventionally ugly, or that woman making a racist comment towards Esmeralda when she's first introduced). It shows the worst, but also the best of humanity such as when Esmeralda stands up for Quasimodo, Phoebus refusing to burn an innocent family, and the Arch Deacon puts Frollo in his place on more than one occasion. On that note, I like that the Arch Deacon is included to show the loving side of the faith, which foils with the hypocrisy that is Frollo. As you mentioned, this movie (aside from the gargoyles) is definitely the most mature animated film Disney has made. While on the gargoyles, I can see their reason for existing to show Quasimodo has given imaginary life to a few stone creatures in order to help him during his hours of isolation. However, they have far too much screen time, that awful song, and for the most part fail as comic relief. Seriously, the running gag with Achilles is funnier than anything the gargoyles do. I think it would've worked better had it shown Quasimodo talking to the gargoyles as inanimate objects that don't respond back to better illustrate the tragedy of living in isolation, similar to the vein of Wilson in Castaway. In all it's an amazing movie, one of the best Disney has made. The fact that it wasn't afraid to tackle all these dark subjects (racism, sexism, ableism, corruption of government and religious power) is what made it stand out. It's probably not going to happen, but I would like to see Disney attempt another movie with serious and mature themes like this again.

One thing that gets me about how quickly people turned on Will Smith is that when you see things happen where white people behave inappropriately, like the *multiple* accounts of Ezra Miller engaging in assault with little to no provocation. This is much more concerning behavior, and yet there was no massive outrage against him. *Eventually* after *multiple* instances of this behavior studios decided they won't be casting him in future films because he's too hard to work with, but it feels like with people of color there's one chance and if there's anything that makes people see them in a less than wholesome light (even if it's not their fault), that's it. With white actors it seems like they just go 'oh, well we all strangle women in back alleys sometimes! We'll give you another shot!'

So, per usual, the video was very entertaining and enlightening. While it has been awhile since I've seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I couldn't help but think about Quasi's mental state during the video. Essentially, before the movie ends, only a handful of people know and willingly interact with Quasi. It's surprising that he even turned out as kind as he did, but I do believe that could have affected his mental health, e.g. the gargoyles. There's not too much proof that they were sentient beings. He was the only one to see them and the birds, but can we really trust his psyche after being isolated for so long with no true affection. They were a source of comfort and familiarity that probably kept him sane enough to make it to adulthood. Although they didn't fit the dreary yet accurate setting, they could have been telling us a lot about our favorite bellringer....but I could be wrong lol

So, I don't think it's that men want a challenge, it's just that in these circumstances they can't handle a "no." It makes them angry, and they feel they have to go through with that anger somehow in order to get what they want, or alternatively to get revenge. They don't want a challenge they just want control, and it hurts their ego when that control is taken away. Also I don't think women who fit shitty men's needs should be seeked out by those men either because those men are just gonna take advantage. Those men need to learn and improve themselves instead.

I love your videos and takes on these subjects, really enjoy hearing the perspectives of other black women. Coincidentally I rewatched the movie 2 weeks ago because I was going on a Disney movie nostalgia binge and upon rewatching, I can agree it was so incredibly underrated. As a child I hated it because it made me uncomfortable and I couldn't articulate why so I never watched it again and even destroyed my DVD cassette of it. Never realized how much of a gem it is (the mere fact that they even made a terrible follow-up sequel that could not hold a candle to the first movie was just disappointing). I also watched some youtube reviews on it as well afterwards and regarding the lack of romance between Quasi and Esmeralda (because I was also pissed off by that), under a reivew video I read a comment that gave an interesting perspective on it: Esmeralda was basically coveted by 3 men - Frollo, Quasi and Phoebus. Frollo was one extreme where he hated/strongly desired/wanted to own Esmeralda and did not see her as a person but a possession. Quasi admired Esmeralda's kindness and good nature and viewed her as infallible simply because she treated him with humanity on the few occasions they met - he essentially placed her on a pedestal and also didn't try to know her as a person. But Phoebus was the only one who regarded Esmeralda as a capable, witty, resourceful and independent woman - out of all of them, he viewed her most as an equal which is why a romance between them felt equally yoked. Honestly, when looking at it like that, I'm actually glad they didn't pursue a romance between Quasi and Esmeralda. Anyway, my comment is already super long. Love your videos and sending you lots of love from the Caribbean

I think the gargoyles are ok for part of the film. They show how lonely Quasimodo is, and they blur the line of reality and imagination: are they really alive or is Quasimodo making them up? And then the final battle happens, and while I enjoyed the humor, it does take out that blurring of the two states. I feel like a big theme in the movie is faith, not just religious faith, but also faith in other people. And I thought that blurring worked well with portraying how faith works and who we should have faith in.

This movie made me forever worried of accidentally killing bugs when I put a rock down after picking it up, that stuck with me forever even after not seeing the movie since I was a kid

Right now in Modern Disney the only villain as bad as Frollo is Emperor Belos from The Owl House.

Hm Because I feel like this is missing from the video, as a Sinti woman I would like to point out this movie typically isn't received well within Romani circles. Don't get me wrong, I am happy many people felt seen because of this movie (as mentioned in other comments under this video) and many Romani people do like this movie and are happy to have some representation I guess. However, Disney perpetuates many stereotypes regarding Romani people. For example, the Romani background characters are based on racist caricatures to name one. It always breaks my heart that racism against Romani people does not receive the same attention. For example, if the Princess and the Frog portrayed black background characters similar to the coon figure, Disney never would've recovered from it. Other problems include the over-sexualization of Romani women, the promotion of racial slurs (yes even the good guys and Romani people in the movie use slurs), white-washing Quasimodo, making up accents that aren't true to Romani dialects, a very clear lack of understanding of Romani culture, and honestly many more. The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the character of Esmeralda are in fact not the epitome of anti-racism.

I hate the Gargoyles too! They take away from the mature tone of this film. Kids can handle more than we think. owo
