Nice to see how easy the work is, as everyone wants a insane amount of $$$ to do this job. Dodge vans are super nicely made, easy to repair.

Did this job on an AWD model and the additional steps are... Remove long pivot Bolt from left driver side motor mount. You have to get the engine to drop down from the cradle to get clearance... Remove the pivot bolt, heat shield and back out the three bolts that attach the rear motor mount to the engine (not easy), it helps to drop the front end of the rear drive shaft to give yourself elbow room. Although we did the motor mount all from underneath if you remove the cowl plenum / windshield wiper unit access to the rear motor mount might be easier. Drop the left sway bar link and lower control arm and swing it away so the tie rod can drop down and clear. Unscrew the crossover flare fitting on the right, passenger side end of the steering rack. The pipe has a loop in it that won't clear the engine cradle. Then you can wiggle the steering gear out through the left, driver side.

You don't need a roll punch set a Phillips screwdriver does the same thing to get the pin out to get the column out I did the same job on my back in the winter in my driveway in 2 hours

Thanks you just answered my first question. Which was how difficult is it? Looks like Firestone gets the job. 😅😅

Yeah, it was not easy.

How long did the job take? I have a 97 Chrysler town and country lxi needs a rack and pinion

Great video. I have a 2004 Dodge Caravan 3.3L that needs one replaced too. You guys made it look easy.

It's much easier on a rack.

Great Video.....do you feel removing the protective plate from underneath the van is absolutely necessary?....I'll attempt this on my driveway this week and I was just wondering if I could remove the rack and pinion through one of the sides of the van.
@D6Spanky4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is.
@D6Spanky4 жыл бұрын
On second thought, it might not be but it is a MILLION times easier to take it off.

Your probably the only person Brians ever hit in the face. (ha ha) I liked your mean look at the end. What's impressive overall is your willingness to take on a big job like that. I think it's cool.

Hahaha I'm pretty sassy. I just don't show it in camera as much. It's all about the editing.

Oh I bet you want a hoist :) Spanky I don't like the cordless impact wrenches in some situations as the impacts are much different than a pneumatic impact wrench. I have had my wrist twisted compared to an air impact that seems to be more controllable.

Of course I do! My garage is too short though. I nearly break my wrists with the air ratchets so I love my Milwaukee M12 impact ratchet. 🤣

I didn't raise my hands but I do count threads. Oh and I also have a round TUIT. I did this on a 2001 T&C and did not remove the cradle. I just removed the tie rod ends and was able to sneak it out on the passenger side. No lift just a couple of jack stands and a floor jack, laying on my back. Gotta do what ya gotta do. Have a great day. Happy Motoring.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqC4ZZKkgM2mjM0 I removed the roll pin off the steering shaft while it was still in the car that made it so it didn't have to drop down so far. Happy Motoring.

Roll pin punch does not help getting the pin out of a blind hole though. Drywall screw though works in threading that hard steel, though if you break it time to get out the carbide drills...... But that thing is clean underneath, no muck, no crud, did it go through a detailer before you got to it.
@D6Spanky6 жыл бұрын
I guess I don't understand. The roll pin punch worked great. And that car was filthy. Just filthy.
@SeanBZA6 жыл бұрын
I have seen plenty of things with a roll pin into a blind hole, so driving it out will not work. The car underside is clean, aside from where the leaks were, no giant loads of rust there, no clumps of mud and road trash stuck underneath to the chassis, just relatively clean steelwork. Must be a Utah thing, no mud on the roads, dry climate and no rust really. Here you have mud all year round, crud stuck under it and only sea salt to corrode the underside of the car, no road salt added to the road, though here I am in the number 2 corrosion capital of the planet. Cars here come with the underside rubberised for the most part, except for stuff from overseas, where that is often added as part of the new vehicle sales process.
