Here's another video where there's more than meets the eye. Straight pool is a game where you need to manipulate the balls. If you're not manipulating the balls there's a real good possibility that the balls are manipulating you. Bob has pointed out one aspect of that. This is also a great rack to demonstrate correct position play which helps maximize speed and direction control. If you go back and watch the way he goes from ball to ball you'll note that the CB is going naturally to the next ball on just about every shot. No drawing or stunning across position zones. The two times he stunned into a ball (to nudge the 7 & 3) the CB traveled 6" max and absolutely nothing could go wrong. Correct shot selection and position play is essential to run balls consistently.

I've seen snooker players hit the pack with English to skirt off so they don't get stuck in the middle. That's my best guess. Would be a good cookie up video and maybe compare 10 standard breaks centre ball, 10 with running and 10 with check!

maybe the outside english is used to control the speed of the cue ball off of the rack. The left spin may act like reverse when hitting the rack. It looked like he hit the break ball pretty hard, but the cue ball slowly walked down the rack for that 9 ball. idk.

If you look at the cue when it drops down off the rack, there was almost no side on it. He either put a lot less than you think or it to balance out the contact induced spin. Maybe slow motion on those frames would tell you how much really put in it.

The englisch prevent the cueball to stuck in the rack 😉

I believe there wasn't as much left english as it looks from this angle. I think there was lot of topspin with only a touch of side because cueball stops spinning very fast. Side spin should have stay on the cueball much longer. Look how cueball hit the rail - almost no sidespin.

Talked John and yes, lots of sidespin in this case to keep the cue ball from running up table. But care needed, only use when close to break ball, when certain of pocketing the ball.

Using outside English helps to prevent scratching on the break shot.
