I'm ready to take up smoking again, since we've found out that Philip Morris has no harmful irritants. I believe they stopped making PM quite a long time ago. PM was also the sponsor of "I Love Lucy" which was the #1 show on tv in the early 50's and their sales were still flat. That's when they decided to do a makeover of their Marlboro brand, which had targeted women and instead focus on men by using the cowboy ads.

Actially, "RACKET SQUAD" finished its run as the 1953 summer replacement for "I LOVE LUCY". Originally, it was scheduled on Thursdays at 10pm(et) from June 1951 through January 1953 {until Philip Morris replaced it with a new season of "MY LITTLE MARGIE"}. Then, it was seen on alternate weeks with "I'VE GOT A SECRET" (at 10:30) from January through July 1953 [under a new sponsor, The Toni Company, until Philip Morris picked up the tab again that summer].

"On the Trail", a section of "Grand Canyon Suite", became the musical signature of Philip Morris on their radio and TV programs from 1933 through 1955. They sponsored Ferde Grofé's 1933 radio program, and decided to use that piece of music to headline all of their shows. Original Philip Morris opening titles of "I LOVE LUCY" also featured it.

Johnny Roventini was an actual bellhop in a fashionable New York hotel when ad agency executive Milton Biow was looking for an idea for a 1933 Philip Morris ad campaign. As a test, he gave Johnny a card with the words "Call for Philip Morris". He called out that name in the hotel's lobby- and Biow *knew* he had his slogan- and icon- and Roventini appeared in Philip Morris newspaper and magazine ads, on their radio and TV shows, and represented them for the rest of his life.
