Nice build! One question: which rails are you using? I have no idea how universal rails work.
@privatetalk343
@privatetalk343 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks :) , I'm using these rails: www.servershop24.de/19in-universal-2u-schwerlast-schienen/a-120946/. You just mount them inside your rack and slide the server case on top. The rails are pretty cheap and there are probably better ones out there, but they get the job done. Most of the rails I bought for my cases didn't fit, were too short, didn't match the screw holes and were a pain to assemble, so universal rails it is :D

@@privatetalk343 Can you still pull out the lower server or does the Schwerlastschiene from the top server jam the lower one? (Because the rails increase the height of the server by a few millimeters.) In the video the two servers aren't screwed to the rack. Can you still do that or do they no longer align because of the rails?
@privatetalk343
@privatetalk343 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes I can still pull out the lower server case, but it's way harder than pulling out a railed server. The few millimeters also mean that the 1U slot on top of my 2 servers isn't really 1U anymore. No, I can't screw the server cases into the rack. The way the rails are mounted doesn't really allow to screw in the servers due to the increased height of the rails. I'm currently working on a video about my rack and its components, maybe this will show the problems in more detail. I guess the best way to mount your servers is just to buy the same server cases with the correct rail mounting kits.

How is this setup doing for you a year later? I have been thinking about building my desktop PC into a server rack and eventually building a home lab as an extension to it. How are the noise levels and temps of the gaming pc when idle/at load? Are there any other things you'd recommend or include? Awesome video, I hope you do more of similar content!
@privatetalk343
@privatetalk343 11 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks, I'm working on some more homelab videos :) First things first, noise was also my biggest concern. I work from home and the rack is right behind my desk, so my Server had to be quiet. The Gaming Pcs noise levels are ok at idle but noisy at load. Main issue is that the fans have too high rpm, I will replace them in the future with lower speed fans to reduce the noise. Temps are also sometimes an issue, the amd RX6700 XT runs quite hot and a top blow cpu cooler is probably not the best choice. I might add more fans in the middle of the case to improve the air flow. (case comes with a mount for more fans) Best thing would probably to water cool it with a custom aio, but I hate water cooling :D. Another option would be to just go with less power hungry system specs or undervolt the components to be more power efficient. Comments on racking your equipment: - If you rack your pc, make sure it's in the same room as your desk or have at least 10gbit networking to connect to your desk. - It sucks to buy rails for cheap server/rackmount cases :D I always ordered the wrong ones - Rack mounting is great if you have some network gear to go with. - Bigger racks only make sense if you have enough devices to mount. - The more space your rack has, the more useless stuff you buy that you don't need :D - If you don't use an open frame rack you might need additional fans/cooling to keep it cool. But in general, it's quite easy and satisfying to rack stuff, so go for it! :D Cheers!

@privatetalk343
@privatetalk343 8 ай бұрын
Thanks :) I will make a video about the airflow and current temperature issues. I will switch the front fans for less noisy ones and maybe switch the cpu cooler. Cpu cooler that blows up isn't optimal, but the two 80mm fans suck most of the heat out of the case.

and one more question - would the 500mm deep version of this rack case also work / be big enough?
@privatetalk343
@privatetalk343 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks :). First, it's way more expensive than using a normal ATX case :D Rack: 300-400€ Servercase: 100-150€ depends on how much quality you want. For the gaming pc parts, that really depends on what level of performance you want. There are good guides on yt how to choose parts according to your requirements. I guess for a good mid-tier system you are looking at 1000€. The 500mm deep version should be enough if the gpu isn't too long.

This was very informative. I consider buying this case for 3 machines. Thanks! Two questions: 1 Why did you replace the cpu cooler?? I was thinking to use 12 cm Noctua fans on the cpu cooler and not install 8cm fans. Also I want to replace the fans in the fanwall with Noctua fans. Ah too tall, missed that. ok 2 Did you consider a magnetic dust filter for that side grate?

For the network way streaming the video/inputs from the pc to a client is probably the way to go. For thunderbolt, you could probably run a up to 50m optical tb cable from your rack to a tb hub.

I dont think rackmounts are the best way for a pc as far as space goes... but if you already have to have a rack sized something like, say, an audio interfact, it sucks to put on something like a desk. If you add, say, studio monitors, you wanna get smart with power so you get, say, a power conditioner or some such, so now you have two rack sized pieces of equipment so, you get a rack then... well... since you already have a rack ya might as well save space in other ways by consolidating whatever you can into a rack. But server chasis always have those extra six damn inches for hard drives I don't need. I saw this video but even it has that extra space that I just wish was shorter ( but that's just being picky, almost any rack on planet earth will fit it and you'd forget about the space ) The other benefit is that if you have a rack you can close up, it looks a lot neater. All the cables are inside and you can just ferry cables outside through holes or whatever as you need it. I love it. Honestly, even outside the closet, once you get it all nice, I think it looks nicer than having it all on the desk.
