I am seeing more and more step thru models being introduced lately, very smart idea, being that many e bike buyers are older folks who really could use a step thru, if not now, most likely in their future.

I would purchase only the step thru. Belgian bivyclles use it standardly (there is a cool KZbin video describing the features that count for ease oof use, etc).

By far the best review of this bike on KZbin! And I've seen some other good ones! Funny enough, I didn't see this review until I purchased this bike (high step version) just two days ago! Can't wait for it to arrive. Cool to see a review company in Utah, where I also live! Thanks for giving it a good test up some strong hills like I'll be seeing! That's particularly helpful for me.

I have a Rad power mini folding 2016 model (61 lbs) and enjoy it very much, but really would like a step thru bike and this Rad power seems to fit the bill nicely. I am 78 and use it for everything including pulling a small trailer for shopping.

This is a great report. You reported the same things that I noticed. I was wondering what tire size it has. It seems like it started with 2.2 width tire and now it's 2.0. I've test ridden this bike twice one year apart and the new version had less torque. Battery was full on both test rides. I do a hill test much like you did. My 500watt Gen 3 Stride performs better on hills.

Step thru, mobility is not an issue now, but age gets to us all. After spending almost $2000.00 we thought it would be prudent to make sure the bike is accessible in the future. Thanks for the video, just waiting on delivery 😁

What would be a good controller replacement to increase speed ( I have the rad city five plus step thru)? My controller gave out under a year of owning at around 600 miles. My pedal assist and throttle stopped working. A common issue with the plus models. So many complaints online. Customer service is horrible. And they are out of stock.. they are sending me a wiring harness and controller but can't replace the part any time soon..it will take several months..they can't even give me a time frame... A lot of people waiting a half a year for help.

Thanks for another high quality video review. I love the real time commentary and opinion. I have a diamond frame e bike and I would definitely buy a step through design. I do have some issues with the high step design from time to time. In my opinion, this is a really esthetic step through design and the semi-integrated battery is a major design improvement. And there is a lot to be said for Rad's proven customer support and long range parts availability.

oh man...I'm torn between this City 5 plus and the RadRover 6 plus...other than the thicker tires on the radrover, which one is the better bike for commuting? Pavement is not always smooth these days...I have been riding bikes with 2 inch wide tires and I can see that wider would be smoother but 4"inch wide is a lot. 3" would be great but no such thing...is the RadRover a better bike for daily use? what if I had to use the bike without the motor on? The Rover is very heavy...this one is also heavy...hard to go up a hill I guess...I don't want to use the bike as a motorcyle! I need my exercise and I think I would use level 1 or 2 max...I know the motor must be off if I want to ride it on bike paths shared with pedestrians...in any case...I will re-watch this review and also the review on the RadRover 6plus...I really can't decide...

Wish you could compare last year‘s model to know if this new motor is actually any stronger. Obviously anyone could say it’s 40% stronger but without a test of last years model who knows. Pretty sure I’m going to order this bike but I’ve been waiting for someone to compare this year‘s model with last year‘s model. Climbing ability. But very good review and I was very impressed that it made it up the hill. Ps high step model for me

I recently got one. please note; power assist is supposed to help you pedal and not to do all the power work without you peddling. you need the exercise. otherwise the bike is an ebike motorcycle which it is really not.

The rad city 5 would be much more attractive if they offered a mid drive option so to take full advantage of the gearing. And a second battery to make it a true commuter bike. As it is configured now the rack is to low and the fender interferes with mounting a second battery under the rack. And mounting it on top will make you have to place your paniers or cargo bag directly on the battery, Restricting air flow and reducing the life of the battery. and the seat post clamp is such to restrict mounting a significant battery on he stem. I know many myself included would pay more for such options. So true commuters do not have to take their battery into where they work to recharge for the commute home. Especially if you commute involves hills or lots of stop and goes.

Yes we've tried getting in different cargo bikes as we've only done a small handful this year. The tricky part is it seems to be the ones that manufacturers have the lowest supply of so it's hard to get them to reviewers like us.

I am defo getting this bike! Currently have a Raleigh Motus low step. The problem with the Raleigh is that the tires are too thin. About one inch wide. And that has proven to be dangerous on my commute in and around London for over a year now. I have travelled over 3000 miles on it so far and the tires are not as comfortable as I would like. Too much vibration being transferred to the handle bar. And a few occasions where the tires have been caught or have skid sideways in relatively shallow groves on the roads and bike paths. The two inch wide tires on this RAD bike would be a much needed improvement for me. 👍 🚲 👍 🚲

Rad bikes are so stylish. Unfortunately they’re always underpowered compared to the competition.
@47f0

Is a Honda Accord underpowered compared to the competition? And what is "the competition", anyway... Running to the store to grab some eggs, or stop light to stop light drag racing? There is always, and I don't care what you own, going to be something out there faster with more power. But a lot of people seem to be pretty happy driving their Toyota Corollas and Honda Accords around, even though an AMG Mercedes will beat them in a race.
@Rexluna1
@Rexluna1 2 жыл бұрын
@@47f0 A Honda Accord is not underpowered compared to the competition, which is composed of vehicles in its class of full size economy sedans. Its competition, in terms of sales, is not Mercedes AMG. Look at the price differential. Now the competition for this ebike is other ebikes at a similar price point. If other ebikes at the same price point have a lot more power, this ebike is comparatively underpowered. Does that make sense?

No thanks. I'll stick with the earlier version. As soon as I heard that nasty whine going up the hill, I realized Rad had given up on maintaining quality on this model. I have blown two geared hubs, and they were not super cheap hubs either. It will be a rather chilly day in Hades before I want another ebike that sounds like a harbor freight angle grinder. Can you get more torque and acceleration from a geared hub? Absolutely, and if I were competing, that would be my first choice. But if I'm racing, I consider parts to be a little more expendable. The direct drive hub on earlier versions of this bike was perfectly suited for the job description of the RadCity - day in and day out, solid, silent dependability. As for the brakes, I will, every day, take a quality cabled brake over a no-name hydraulic. Hydraulic sounds wonderful, until you learn the sad truth - there are levels of quality when it comes to machining pistons, seal materials and brake line tubing, and if those parts are on the low end, a cheap hydraulic system can give you misery that never ends. I suppose the more integrated battery mounting is somehow more aesthetic, but honestly, trying to cosmetically blend in a battery of this size capacity is sort of reminds me of a fat guy struggling to get on skinny jeans. You're not fooling anybody... it's an ebike. I was leaning toward getting a RadCity this year. I hope some of the earlier versions are still in inventory, or I will be looking somewhere else.

Who hurt you?
@47f0
@47f0 2 жыл бұрын
@@gmsunshine - Hmm. Hurt? Maybe - but mostly jaded. About 7 or so decades of seeing manufacturers making a name and a reputation on a brand or a model, then predictably, consistently, inevitably, using that reputation to continually "improve the product" by downgrading that product with each new iteration, all while charging as much or more... yeah, that. I swear these corporate executives will sell you "new and improved" high protein oatmeal because it got more protein by adding weevils to it. Stick around a few decades, and you too might become shocked when a company brings out a new model of something and actually does improve it. I have not been shocked by any of Rad's "improvements" in the last few years. And unless you really want to have your ears bleed, and learn language your mother never taught you, don't get me started on the list of "improvements" to the RadWagon with each generation.

Motor was quiet??? Your presenter needs hearing aids.... there was all kinds of noise picked up by the riders microphone. C'mon EBR, clearly RAD is a bit of a promotional and support group. The throttle only hill test is not a decent performance. Getting down o 5 - 6 MPH is a fail.... why do you folks just say so? Please cut the crap and call poor performance poor performance.
@ElectricBikeReport
@ElectricBikeReport Жыл бұрын
Relatively quiet, yes. When you've tested as many bikes as we have, you've been exposed to quite the broad spectrum of noise on hub motors. Also this review is a bit older so we've tried to clarify this better in more recent reviews, but honestly, anything capable of clearing the hill, no matter the time, should be considered good. At the end of the day it's a steep hill and only a small motor is propelling a bike and rider. That's not nothing. If flying to the top is a priority though then this won't be the bike for you.
