I've ridden my Rad City 5 for over 13,000 miles and it's been running great. I really wish Rad offered a 20+ amp extended battery for more range. I've already added an extra Rad battery and a triangle battery to extend my rides. Also, my hydraulic brakes stop quickly and smoothly, no problems at all. Since you mentioned having issues with your brakes, maybe watching some basic maintenance videos on KZbin could help sort them out. I would disagree with most of your comments. It’s a very comfortable bike with a nice smooth delivery and a right had throttle grip. My wife and Grandkids can ride it. I love the semi integrated battery…it keeps the frame sleek and not so bulky and the battery is much easier to take out.

I have the Ratcity 1. It has about 2000 miles on it and still works pretty good. I have noticed some battery degradation but not much. I ride to work every day and get compliments on it. I did put a suspension seat on it which made all the difference in the world in the ride. I am looking to upgrade to a new bike so this one video is helping me look at a different perspective. I have a coworker that is interested in buying the one I currently have. It’s a shame that there is no trade-in policy for these bikes, like cars or motorcycles.

I've got a 2022 RadCity Step-Thru 3 and aside from a real pain in the arse battery that went bad a few months after purchase and over which I lost 1/2 year of use (Rad Power support was always very good in working with me to isolate the problem, and replaced the battery along with other components just to be sure that nothing else was causing any problems AND paid for VeloFix to come to my home to provide the servicing), the bike has worked quite well for our purposes. Relatively speaking, it's a very comfortable bike and its cockpit is very much like the bike I rode in Amsterdam - very functional, practical, high sitting position with is easy on your neck, back, hands, and wrists. I've not tested its miles-per-charge performance, but guesstimate 40+ miles per charge -- except for a sizeable hills for which I use PAS 3, I typically use PAS 1 and for more of a work-out, I switch down to PAS 0 / off. If I were buying another e-bike today, it'd be the Aventon Level 2 (for its class 3 performance, hydraulic disc brakes, excellent welds and beautiful styling, paint job, UL listed battery, etc.) or a foldable e-bike such as one made by Lectric, Aventon, Blix, etc.

That might be the biggest thing Rad has going for it- their service arm. It can be a real nightmare for riders who receive a faulty bike when dealing with a less established company. Looks like aside from the time lost Rad did right by you. Thanks for the input!

@@Top5ebikes Good customer service is great, but you should almost never need it. I just keep seeing horror stories about battery, controller, and other electrical issues with Rad Power bikes. If I pay $2000 for an ebike, it had better work.

I've been a Radrover owner since 2016 with two of them with around 3800 miles on each ebike. On my 3rd set of tires and 3rd set of brake pads. I upgraded the seats to Cloud-9, Kinekt Body float suspension seatpost, larger foot pedals, and TRP Spyre cable brakes. The speedo/odo doesn't work on one Rad Rover is the only issue. Just purchased the RadCity step thru for my wife and she loves it. She like riding the RadCity compared to the Radrover. She is more of a weekend leisurely rider for exercise or we ride to the farmer's market or for quick meal/exercise run. I'm more of a single track trail rider, +20 miles for cardio, or work commuting on the Radrover if the weather is nice.

For awhile we had the large basket and roll top liner on our RadCity and that was great for grocery runs and beach gear. I took it off for the review to focus on the core bike but I enjoyed the convenience and easy installation of that accessory.

Really appreciate this review, as this bike is on my short list along with others from Rad and other brands. For future videos, you might want to spell check the section titles. "Inseam" was incorrectly spelled "Inseem", and "Brakes" was incorrectly spelled "Breaks". For content, though, this video is incredibly useful because of your extensive time and mileage with the bike. Thanks! One reason Rad might have for partially exposing their battery is cooling. I'm a computer/electrical engineer, and would mention that batteries do produce heat when charging or discharging. That company also seems to use the same battery on multiple models, and semi-integrated makes that more feasible. I don't have any inside info on these theories, however -- they're just educated guesses.

I have the Rad City step thru 3..a bit heavy but rides nice, about 1K miles on it, did have to replace the magnet sensor wheel on the crank last year & upgraded the headlight-Was $1300 back in 2019 , overall meets my needs.

This bike hits all my points. I like the bikes coming out with the front rack option. I like the integrated lights. I don't need 4 inch wheels. The adjustable stem is a nice standard feature, I did not get one on my ebike. I would need to down-size the chainring to 30T. The fenders are nice. I got caught in some rain & got mud on back a few days ago. I only use about 120 watts most of the time, 750 watts is a very respectable tool.

The power should be substantial for most riders definitely. It will get you up most hills even without a running start. I agree on the 4 inch wheels. They're nice if you're riding on trails a lot but they are not really practical if you're only riding your bike on pavement. Way more expensive to replace too.

@@Top5ebikes I never even sat on an ebike until a couple months ago. I think I could live with a 250 watt motor for most of my use. I would pair that with a 48 volt battery 15 amp hour battery. The frames look like they are on another level from my Giant Cypress. I would suspect the commuter-class bike would be fine for the light trial stuff. I don't mind the 3 inch tires, I'm a bit afraid to try smaller tires, thinking the bike geometry might be messed up. The design, engineering, & economics, are professionally pre-selected. Being in Yakima, there is a Rad dealer in town, also a Aventon dealer. There is something to having good customer service & being a major brand. That may be worth a couple hundred dollars more for the product. I suspect the insurance industry has most every producer making safe products. It would be interesting to see what class of bike & features are selling on an industry level.

The throttle and the shifter are both on the right side. Also this is a very comfortable ebike. The least thing I dislike abut the Rad City plus is PAS 1 and 2 levels. These ought to be 150W and 275.

The times they are a changing… I am a 73 year old guy who’s been riding unpowered Bianchi street bikes for decades, always on paved bike trails - which are extensive in my area - and on the low traffic, residential back streets of a small city. My peloton racing is far in the past, but I still like to go exploring the town on two wheels… in good weather. I just bought my first battery electric bike, a RadCity 5 Plus “High Step”, to keep out on the road as my strength and stamina diminishes with age. I don’t feel the need for anything really gnarly at this stage of my life, and Rad is now liquidating the remaining 5 Plus bikes for under $1000. At that price, it is definitely a good e-bike choice in August 2024!

I just got a used Rad City 4 - 2022. I had problems with tire wobble and I found something online that helped because the tires are new. I deflated the tires and took a toothbrush with dish soap and put the soap on the tire wall and the rims. The tire seemed to pop in place after I took it for a test drive. Sometimes a simple soap fix is the answer for new tires or you need to True the wheel and get the spokes adjusted.

The Speeds should be customizable - 2 is fine, speed 3 should be lowered by 50 watts as should speed 4 which allows better control of battery per charge.

I had a Rad Rover 5 for 5 years and never had ANY ISSUES with it at all! I now have a RAD ROVER 6 PLUS, and I hope it gives me as much satisfaction as the RAD ROVER 5! I don't know how you got 30 MPH from that bike, as the Rad Power Bikes are limited to 25 MPH!!

If you're a heavier person or if you want power and speed do not buy anything from Rad Power bikes their bikes are extremely conservative in regards to peak power and torque. A "750w motor" from them is basically a 500w nominal motor with a peak of 750 watts max and a lower amp controller so it's a bit misleading. RAD Power does this to comply with federal e-bike law. The problem is every other manufacturer selling 750w bikes offers true 750w nominal motors that peak well above 750 watts (1000w+). So with that being said if you like power and speed and torque RAD Power isn't for you their bikes are some of the most underpowered bikes on the market. Rad Power should really disclose that their "750w" motors are really 500w hub motors. If you look on their website they don't disclose anything about this which is really a bad look as it's misleading to their customer base.

Just purchased on June 20th, 2024, I worked for 2 days and have stopped working, Customer Support has not been helpful, and has been unresponsive. They thought it was the controller, ordered it, on July 6th, and as of July 9th it has not been sent out yet. And I have to take the bike apart and fix it. I called a service center (the closest was 2 hours away) and they felt it was the motor. They have not been helpful, as it is so big, I can't transport it and would have to hire a van and drive 2 hours each way to get it to a service center. So, if anything goes wrong with the bike as in my situation, and you're not close to a service center nor have a vehicle large enough to transport this bike, as of the date of this writing, you are screwed. And good luck speaking with someone with authority to make decisions.

that 750 watts is the peak wattage not the nominal right? , are rad batteries UL listed?

Pretty sure it’s 750 peak, not nominal. Designed for more low end torque when climbing hills without a head start but not as fast acceleration at higher speeds. Rad doesn’t currently adhere to UL standards because the follow a different battery certification. According to their help documentation they are in process of achieving UL certification.

Three comparable bikes I’d recommend that are in the same price range that are arguably better and in my opinion cooler/sexier are the Aventon Level.2, the Velotric Discover 1, and the Ride1up 700. All three will come with better components, go faster than 20mph out of the box, and come in more eye catching colors. They all come with fenders, similar sized batteries and comparable motors but the Level has a torque sensing motor whereas the others don’t. They all come with racks except for the Velotric bike but since that bike is only $1249 right now you can easily add a rack to it for $69 extra.

@@Top5ebikes FYI- a youtube competitor did actual tests on all of the brands you mentioned and the Rad outperformed them all. Seems like you're going off "Feelings" which isn't the best way to compare. True the 3 you mentioned might esthetically be easier on the eyes. I think the Euphree Robin X+ might out perform the Rad and also is easy on the eyes. Look forward to you reviewing it?

I purchased this bike in May 2023, took it out and it worked great. Second time out, there is no power. Emailed several times, received a ticket # weeks ago and no communication since. After research on the issue I found out defective controls is a common issue with this bike. We purchased a Rad mission a few years ago and haven’t had any issues. That is why we purchased the Radcity 5 plus. Now we have an expensive bike that is useless to us and no response from Rad.

I had an issue where the power would cut out randomly to the motor despite having a full battery and seeing power on the controller display. A bike mechanic told me it might be because I messed with the factory settings to increase the top speed to 24 mph. I reverted back to default and that seemed to fix the issue. Yours might be a totally different issue but just in case make sure you’re using default controller settings.

I do not recommend buying from Rad. My first communication with them regarding my brand new Radcity 5 plus loosing power, was on July 1st. They are weeks responding back to emails. I completed everything they recommended to check and sent videos back to them of this as they requested, on the day of their email. I go weeks with no response. The last email received from them, they were closing my ticket #. I have a $2,600. Bike that doesn’t work. They closed their 1-800 number. This experience with them is beyond ridiculous. They sell big ticket merchandise with absolutely zero customer service.

One of the 2 Radexpand bikes I received had a missing stop nut on the front brake caliper and the brake cable was wrapped around and through the handlebar which did not allow turning the steering wheel to the right. The front brake was so tight that the front wheel could not be installed. Rad Power Bikes responded to my initial contact through "Customer Support", but now does not respond at all to my requested chats to resolve these problems. DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$$ ON THIS BIKE.

I have a radcity 5 plus. It has had battery issues. I have been waiting for months for replacement parts. The bike without a battery is useless as it is so heavy to ride without some battery assist. I have done less than 100 Km. Radcity was initially very good with customer service in terms of replying, but they have not been able to provide the replacement parts and have not replied to my last couple of emails. I have spent lots of time trying to diagnose and repair this bike. Not happy so far. If they could send the replacement parts and the bike then works, I will be happy. Time will tell.

I agree with your comment on the low power, which may be due to the heavy weight of the bike. As a significant negative, you didn't mention the fact that this is probably one of the only Ebikes that you can't use your key to lock out the power and walk away. I bought mine last year when the bike had first come out and realized after a while that I couldn't use my key to lock out the power and walk away. I had to remove the battery and carry the 10+/- Lb battery with me, if I wanted to lock out the power for a quick stop. POOR design.

This is one of very few options for me. First of all, fat tire bikes are a NO GO. NO WAY NO HOW. I have no idea why 99% of all ebikes sold in the U.S. are those fat tire abominations. Where I live is literally covered with thorns called goatheads. You wouldn't get half a mile on a fat tire bike before having a flat. I saw a video of a guy who easily punctured the tube on a fat tire bike with a wooden toothpick. I am disabled, and cannot fix a flat out on the street. You can get 4mm thick tubes for the size tires this bike has (though I would definitely prefer 26" tires) and with sealer in them, they can be punctured many times by thorns without going flat. I don't give a rats ass about the quality of the drive components. I am physically unable to pedal, so I would be using throttle only. I also would likely never exceed 10-12 mph. I want to ride about the same speed I used to ride my cruiser style bike, back when I could still pedal. The seat would have to be replaced with something more comfortable. I'm 6' even, 240 pounds. I need somewhere between 15-20 miles of NO PEDAL range on flat streets at no more than 10-12 mph. The price is not an issue. It's the quality I'm concerned about. It would need to be able to be ridden as much as 15 miles per day, 4-5 days a week, for at least 2 years without breakdowns. I have seen a lot of videos where people had electrical problems with this bike. That is my main concern. I would likely remove the fenders. They serve no purpose where I live. The appearance of the bike looks fine to me, at least in white. Smaller diameter wheels like 26" would look better.

OK reading the above I have to say that the ad hominems were over the top but stepping back from that I have to agree with Breaking Rad in some ways. First off your post title is provocative to say the least: "Reasons NOT to buy a Rad Power Bikes RadCity 5 Plus." What you are disingenuously saying here really is: Why I would NOT buy a RadCity 5+. But you chose to be provocative. No? It's a fine bike and while you covered many features, albeit some of them inaccurately, you failed to mention the fact that RadCycle was aiming for a holistic bike concept here from the ground up--from frame design, even tires in Thailand, to over all concept (Dutch style upright), to components (and mine has the Shimano not the entry-level "cheap version" you erroneously slandered--why do I say that? because it was during the pandemic that Rad had trouble getting all the components they needed, end of story. I personally had to wait months for a component they needed to ship to me, but they did and I finally understood why. Their customer support, and other factors you did not mention, was excellent in fact. Above all I noticed that you are a short person reviewing a bike that will be a stand-out for tall people like myself, although I use the short step not the full step you reviewed. I have had the bike for almost 1000 kms now (I'm in Canada so make that 800 miles or so), and I did not have to adjust anything taking it out of the box. The hydraulic brakes now need bleeding it's clear and I'll do that myself with an ordered kit, but will likely take it in for a full review soon anyway. It is what it says it is--a Dutch-style commuter/cruiser. I'm 71 and in my time I bike toured Canada, Europe and India, even an episode of road racing on a Cinelli, but now my knees are shot on hills and so this bike is perfect for Montreal. You really did not highlight WHO this bike will be of interest to, like myself. I commend Rad for understanding their market better than you, Your criticisms about the derailleur (covered above), and the battery not completely integrated into the frame are really inappropriate. You are reviewing a $2000 bike not $4-6k right? Again you missed their holistic approach to this concept bike for commuter/cruiser with in a Dutch style. Every aspect of this bike--and again you did not mention the huge array of holistic-designed accessories right down to front racks and rear child seats and pet cages.. you missed the boat on this. It's not a perfect bike but it is a huge leap forward on so many levels for a price people can afford. Thanks for the feedback. We talk about the benefits of owning a Rad (in general) in other videos but we could have gone into more depth here for sure. I try to keep the reviews between 10-15 mins to not totally lose our audience. Rad is a well known brand with a robust service arm and we understand why some riders would be more comfortable buying from them. Their bikes to me are more utilitarian and meant to appeal to a wider audience than some of the more niche brands we also review. My intention is not to trash Rad, I just personally believe their other models offer a better value than the RadCity. I also think our particular bike was not up to par in terms of build quality and we know that this brand was struggling with a lot of supply chain issues at the time we received it. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the bikes being packaged now are of better quality.

Top reason NOT to buy a Rad Power bike - there is a good chance it won't work when you assemble it, and they don't provide any real support. In my case I assembled a Radrover 6 Plus and the displays power up but the motor doesn't respond to any inputs. They sent me a reply to my email telling me to replace the fuse in the battery. This instruction is for a different bike - the Radrover 6 comes with a new style battery where, according to Rad Power, the fuse is not replaceable. Opening the battery will void your warranty. BTW, if you do blow the fuse most posts say they will deny warranty and tell you to buy a new $800 battery. This is not a good company. They also told me they will charge me $130 restocking fee if I return the bike - you know, the one they sold that doesn't work and they don't have any ability to support. Their business model might be to ship the same defective bike out multiple times and collect $130 each time it is returned.

I can speculate about other peoples experience, but I can tell you about mine. I’ve had to bike three weeks. I have not moved it 10 yards. It powers up, but it has no power coming from the motor. So far their award-winning support team have told me to replace the fuse in a sealed battery, which comes with warnings that if I open it, the warranty will be void, and they told me to unplug everything and plug it back in again. Every time they send a so-called suggestion, and I do it and send them back the result it takes a minimum of three days and this week more than a week to get a reply. I note that they have recently turned off their support phone lines. Try calling and see what happens. When I write a review, I very much try to just recount the events and not add heavy layer of personal opinion but in this case I did offer one. This is what has happened to me, I have a $2000 bike that cannot be ridden.

This is great feedback. The poor customer support is something they’ll need to get a handle on. We hear negative feedback about a lot of ebike support teams tbh but the examples provided in this comment thread sound particularly crappy.

Here is an update. I was told it was their policy not to agree to a return until they had exhausted every diagnostic possibility. I replied (in writing, every communication with them involved a 3 to 5 day delay) that their policy did not supersede the provincial consumer protection laws, and I had already wasted several weeks on this. I called the Vancouver store and was finally able to talk to someone. They looked at the history and agreed that I could return the bike. Eventually I agreed to let them provide a working bike for a test ride and if I didn't like it they would do the return. I took the bike over ($200 ferry ride from Vancouver Island) and the bike they provided was adequate. It is worth noting that this bike cost $2,000 Canadian, less a $1,400 rebate the province was rather stupidly giving to people who bought an ebike (it was a terrible use of public funds, basically a lottery where you didn't have to buy a ticket), and they paid for the ferry and gave me a further discount so the bike cost me $300. While this was going on I had tried a CUBE Kathmandu with a Bosch mid motor. The CUBE was a $4,900 bike, but the experience was much better. The torque sensing system is much more natural than the cadence sensor/throttle combination on the RadRover, you can just about ignore the fact you are on an ebike and it just feels like the grades are a fraction as steep. The RadPower system is similar to all of the cheaper bikes, and it takes more attention to ride. Having said that, it is less than half the price.

So where to begin. So right off I'm going to say just found your channel but honestly. Not exactly sure why you have one. So many things you said scream "im new at this and don't understand... umm... how things work.". Super awkward to watch, I was embarassed for you watching this. yikes. I have about 2k miles on one of these. I use it as primary transportation, as well as doing food delivery on the side. I'm in Albuquerque, in the NE heights where I live and work, the entirety of this section of the city sits on a grade that varies between 1.1% and 3% depending on which section you are. When I'm working, this bike needs to carry the following. Large platform on back, large delivery bag on back, A large food delivery bag inside that bag, a front basket, a bag in the front basket as a rider, I sit at 200 lbs before my hiplok gold lock that sits around my waist, my helmet, and my backpack. All in all, I load this thing down at about 275 between myself, what I carry, and and accessories. So with that said, this bike takes off, uphill, fully loaded just fine. I'm absolutely certain I know more about how this bike handles going up hills, while loaded than you do. Saying there is a problem with the motor not being powerful enough is just crap. it's not true. you're just wrong. The bike feeling wobbly. I can tell from your footage there are 2 things you don't understand and the first one is cringy. You actually complained about stability comparing a dutch style bike with a 27.5x1.97" wide tire to a fat tire bike with a 26x4" tire. Of course the fat tire bike is more stable Dr. Hawking. I can't believe you expected someone to take that comment seriously. The other problem you had with stability is you have no idea how to fit yourself to a dutch style bike. yeah, if you put all your weight back and lean back then yeah genius, you unload the weight from the front wheel and apparently say things like "omg it's wobbly". If you don't know how to fit a bike to yourself, by yourself. Go pay to see a bike fitter to adjust your handlebars and seatpost stem. Geometry of the rider matters on a dutch style bike. I just cant with your channel. You apparently have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to ebikes. Yikes.

Whenever a person starts a comment off by hurling blatant insults and questioning our credentials I already know this person isn’t interested in having a legitimate dialogue and I know that engaging with them is probably a waste of time (but here goes). It’s really cool that you love your RadCity so much that you are willing to dismiss any other opinions that may invalidate your purchase. You can disagree with our assessment without trashing our channel or telling us we have no business reviewing ebikes for the past two years. Every RadCity is not the same and I can tell you from experience that not every ebike that comes out of the box reaches your doorstep in perfect condition. We’ve published over 100 videos and between the two us we’ve personally ridden around 75 ebikes. We talk to bike mechanics, we chat with other ebike reviewers and we do our own extensive research. Believe me when I say that I know the difference between a well put-together ebike versus one that is subpar in its assembly. When I say that a bike performs poorly I’m speaking in relative terms and comparing it to other ebikes in its category and price range. Your bike might be great for flat Albuquerque where you never encounter a hill over a 3% grade but we test our bikes on much steeper hills because if you only ride a bike under optimal conditions you’re not really getting a good read on how well it’s going to perform in stressful conditions. Try riding your bike up a 10 or 12% grade, then try riding 50 other bike models up that same hill and then get back to me on how well it performs. Cause that’s what we do before forming an opinion. You disagree with our assessment of the RadCity and that’s totally fine but you don’t get to dismiss the countless hours of work we’ve put into our channel just cause you don’t like what we said about your bike. It ain’t personal.

good video. rad power sucks in terms of customer service. try getting a new display or controller. its gonna take you 3-4 weeks and cost $$$
