Just bought one of these and have been scratching my head over the instructions. Now with the help of your video I should be able to do install it. My kayak weighs 23kg (50 lbs) so hoping it will be easier than yours to lift!
@bobgranell26932 жыл бұрын
I own two of these things and after struggling to raise my kayaks for years, it finally dawned on me what the simple answer is. Bring the two robes to the center of the kayak so that you were pulling towards the inner part of your garage. Then pull one rope at a time while the other rope holds the locking mechanism in the release position while the first can slide easily through it. Now just alternate pulling the ropes.First, the ropes are going to slide through much much easier. Second, you’re only lifting half of the boat at a time which makes the job again, easier. Try it.

I would say, they are very easy to install, pulling up a heavy load (fishing kayak) was just has difficult as you said!. I would not recommend due to the pulley being over the brake system. This makes pulling to the highest level impossible as the rope needs to pull outward which engages the brake or sideways which causes high friction on the metal brake system hole. If you have a very high ceiling, go for it, but if your garage is 10' or lower, you are going to have to limbo under your kayak.

That’s exactly what I found with my fishing kayaks I have to find another way
@9009matorres4 жыл бұрын
The issues i ran into with the radsportz hoist is the plastic pulleys were cheap and fell apart within a summer. Also, being one rope, it is very difficult to lift the entire kayak (i have an fs12t - 77lbs). If you create a double rope system, you can pull one rope at a time...which saves your hands. Also thinking about attaching a crank to the wall instead of cleat to make it easier on myself.
@HOOKEDoneFISHING4 жыл бұрын
Good idea on the wall crank, gives me some ideas as well. After using it for some time now, I found pulling up one side at a time little by little helps much better then pulling both at the same time. Seems to make it lighter and easier, just be careful not to pull to much on one side just in case is slides off. What parts are plastic on yours?

I just ordered one of these and it has plastic pulleys. Looks like it's made out of an old milk jug.

Good idea with the rope in between. The lags look strong but I'm a little suspicious of the pulley rivets and the hook rivets. My kayak weighs 140 lbs so I don't know. What do you think?
@HOOKEDoneFISHING4 жыл бұрын
I think it could hold it, my kayaks are close to that weight at times when I leave stuff in it. If you don't trust the rivets on the pulley, maybe you could rap the pulley with a small chain idk just a idea.

I bought this some time ago and never installed it. I plan to this fall and it will be over cars. I'd love to see how you used a chain backup.
@HOOKEDoneFISHING4 жыл бұрын
Just use a chain that will fit over the hooks and long enough to rap around the kayak, it's best to use a rope to measure out how much chain you will need. Best of luck!👍

The manual that came with my kayak says that if it's to be hung up , then it should be slung on its side, rather than hull down as in your video. Do you have any thoughts about the pros and cons of slinging a kayak on its side? Obviously it will hang lower than it would if it was hull-down, though that's not a problem in my storage space. Any comments? Thanks!
@HOOKEDoneFISHINGАй бұрын
That's weird for it to call for that, Are sure it isn't talking about doing that just in case it's stored outside and making sure water doesn't stand in it? If it were me, I don't think I would worry about it.
@ClareGilliamАй бұрын
@@HOOKEDoneFISHING Yup, definitely says that it should be either on it's side, or hull up (rather than hull down). But I think maybe that's just for long term storage. If you were using the kayak regularly then I agree, you probably don't need to worry about it.

Do you think this would work for hoisting a 17’ canoe? How snug can it get to the ceiling? My maximum height is the bow depth which is 22”. I have about 30” to clear my garage door.
@HOOKEDoneFISHING Жыл бұрын
Depends on the weight of the canoe. I think it might hang below the garage from the measurement you just gave me. I have about 16'' from the top of the ceiling to the kayak (space for pulley and rope).

He means basically the distance from floor to base of kayak when hanging but the distance from ceiling to base of kayak. I've also been looking for this measurement do will update once I've hung mine. It's handy to know when walking underneath if your head will hit it lol...ground clearance 🤘

About 72inches from the roof anchor points to the bottom of my kayak
@diceros693 жыл бұрын
In my setup. Roof to kayak is about 2’ and depending on the kayak, another 1’ worth of kayak. The flat bottom kayaks and v-shape have different clearance. In total, I installed it, where I could lose 3’+ of height and still have clearance on walk underneath.
@yeager6882 Жыл бұрын
From the look of your video it doesn't look like your pulleys are doing anything, leverage-wise, other than lifting the kayak evenly, which helps. So your system is doing the work of holding the kayak in such a way that you can lift it at a single point. You're still lifting most the weight. If you are lifting something "up," and you want to "pull down" to lift it, you need at least three leverage points.
@HOOKEDoneFISHING Жыл бұрын
Later after working with this system, I've found that lifting one end at a time little by little is much easier than trying to do both at the same time. I've just never ended up doing a new video to show this.

How many lbs did the kayak weigh that you used for the hoist?
@HOOKEDoneFISHING4 жыл бұрын
Dry with nothing in it is 94lb, but with my crate and other stuff I would say around 125lb-135lb. It's best when lifting it to pull down on one side then hold and then pull the other little by little. I have found this to be much easier when lifting it up.

Thanks for the great video on installing the kayak hoist. I am wondering how close to the ceiling can the kayak go using this? I would like to put it above my garage door. Thank you for your response!
@HOOKEDoneFISHING4 жыл бұрын
Your welcome! From the mount to the kayak is about 20", you will have to see how thick your kayak is to determine the clearance you will have. I have a 10ft ceiling and with my kayak I have 7' clearance under it. Please keep in mind I don't trust the straps and used a chain big enough to rap around the kayak and use the hooks to attach it to, just in case the straps get old and the kayak doesn't come falling down. To measure the length of chain needed, use a rope and rap around the kayak to the hooks then lay out and measure the rope. Any other questions just let me know.
