I have met Phil Keaggy ( I was an artist escort for the publicist he was using at the time) and had the opportunity to chat with him on several occasions just about life, his likes & life - he is one of the nicest, sweetest men I've ever met on top of being a phenomenal musician. He is generous, funny, loving, and has a tender heart.. I also saw him at a local concert for the homeless in Nashville raising funds 4 a homeless outreach ministry there. He is a legend & a humble man.

Not to start a debate, but I saw both Phil and Randy Stonehill at a church in 1989 in Seattle and was a changed man after. Later Saw and met Phil after a life-changing concert. His God given talent has, I'm sure done the same to many. His heart was full enough to talk and share the Lord's word with me. ROCK ON!!

A friend of mine, who was guitarist for Air Supply (love song specialists of the late 70s early 80s) played in the support band at a Phil Keaggy concert in Sydney (late 80s). At the interval after Phil's first set I saw my guitarist friend in the foyer, carrying his beloved strat. I went over and said, 'Hi - what did you think of Phil's set?" My friend smiled and shook his head in disbelief, then put his strat in the bin and walked away. Oh how we laughed ... (He went back and got it, but it was a great gag ...)

I read somewhere that Jimmy Hendricks was asked "What's it like to be the worlds best guitarist?" in an interview on the radio. Hendricks replied something to the effect of "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy". I have been a fan of his guitar playing since the 1970s, and I don't listen to the Christian music scene (nothing wrong with it, it's just that I'm not Christian). "Six String Conspiracy" was the first of his records in my collection. I have around 6 of his early vinyl LPs, and a pile of CDs, but I've not listened to any of them since around 2005 when I last moved. I really need to get a new receiver so I can listen to them again.

+Mark Pettigrew Did you shake hands with him? My goodness, his fingers are so long that I thought they were going to wrap around my hand twice! I exaggerate of course, but it surprised me, especially because he is of pretty short stature. But his fingers are very long. I'm sure that it helps him play as well as he does.
@markpettigrew34828 жыл бұрын
docrocker7 Truthfully, I don't recall noticing anything unusual about Phil's fingers when we parted. What I DO recall, however, was a bass player from my home town, named Jim Thompson. (Funny that thinking of the story has brought his name to my mind, since I was trying to remember it recently, and I couldn't.) He came over to the house I shared with my brother and mother, one night, to jam with me and another musician. As Jim left, he said, "You know, people have told me I should have played piano, because I have SIX FINGERS on each hand. As I digested that weird information --- which I'd never even noticed before --- he shook my hand goodnight. Sure enough, he had an unusually broad grip. Needless to say, I got a better look at his hands the next time I saw him. I'm guessing that six fingers per hand wouldn't have helped him much, if at all, when playing piano. The number of fingers is less important than the distance that one can stretch from one finger to the next one. With more fingers, he actually might have had a harder time stretching them.

I saw Phil LIVE back in 1977 with John Michael Talbot (with long hair and a beard!). 1000 seats only! Phil's band came out and played 10-15 songs. The crowd was upper eschelon "know-it all/seen-it-all's" from all over the USA and 12 other countries....they were used to the very best - they were "snobby", to be honest. I saw Phil (being a lead guitar player myself) do and play things I never thought possible - unless I'd personally seen him do it myself! In this video, near the beginning, he plays leads where he uses his little finger on his right hand (and he's missing his middle finger!), and places it on the volume knob of his Gibson Les Paul guitar, and the volume is off - as he picks downward - while holding his little finger on the knob, he turns the volume up with the downward motion of his little finger - while he holds the guitar pick with the same hand - using his thumb and index finger - plucking the strings! On the upstroke of the guiitar pick, he turns the volume knob back to the off position! He does it so fast that the guitar sounds like an organ or makes whale-type sounds! You can see him do it on this video! No other famous guitar player does this, nor have I ever seen anyone do it anywhere in 35 years or before! Watch him closely! That's just one of his "tricks"! He has hundreds or more! Anyway, when I,( and the only 999 other people who got the privilege of seeing Phil Keaggy and his whole band) watched them all, the this "snobby crowd" gave him "standing ovations" after every song! AFTER EVERY SINGLE SONG! He did 2 encores! That's 14+ Standing ovations from "snooty know-it-all snobs"!!!!! I've never seen such "snobs" so impressed with anyone - nor have I have ever seen the like since! I mean these people would snub at the Boston Symphony orchestra, Led Zeppelin, (whoever!) if they weren't perfect in every way! I guess you had to be there! That concert was worth $5000.00 for every single ticket, in my opinion, and I got to see him and Mr. Talbot for $10! I can't can't believe that! Incredible! Lastly, I recently saw Phil Keaggy interviewed by Pat Robertson on the 700 Club Christan network show. Phil told Pat that many people say to him, "Phil, you could have been so great, if you only hadNOTt been a Christian!" Phil looked at Pat when he told him this....with an expression of "Why are these people saying this? Don't they get it? If it wasn't for Jesus Christ, I wouldn't be able to play anything like I do play!" I thought what Phil said to Pat, along with his expression and words that followed, made his point very well!
