Raddy RF-919 Firmware V1.706 WATCH THIS FIRST !

I was able to update to firmware version 1.706 successfully. Just followed the instructions in the user manual. They have added a new item in the system menu to enable\disable muting. I selected disable muting and tuned around the 40m band last night. Soft muting still exists, but does seem to be improved. The soft muting time is reduced while tuning.

I did exactly the same today right after it arrived on my desk. Followed the included instructions 100% and to the point as I read about bricked RF919s here before. BUT it still failed and it's dead now. They must figure out where the problem is (SD card compatibility issue?) and until then remove the Firmware from their website. I hope their support will help me. Be careful everyone !

I did perform a full format of the 4GB microSD card I used.....not the quick format as implied by the instructions. Full format takes several minutes to complete.

@@bigben099 yes, I did full format fat32 on an old 4g drive and it updated successfully. It might be worth noting mine had 704 on it before I applied 706. maybe 704 is fixed for firmware updates?

This problem of muting was solved on receivers a while ago, which should not have waited until it's debut. Dan Robinson said the update he did recently bricked his raddy 919, so I won't do it. I still think it's odd that it's not covered for such an occurrence, what's the point if you are stuck with a dead receiver, or amateur radio equipment from a legal firmware update. 😮

I think unless your radio has a really serious issue its always best to hang back on any update. Seen this happen many times on other electronics.

Fred when you review this radios performance on HF/VHF/UHF, di you use one of your external antennas like you do with your Yeasu & Alinco radios? You would expect any half decent radio to perform well on a good tuned outside antenna, but have you tried it using only the supplied whip that comes with the radio? As this is primarily designed as an all singing/all dancing portable, a review when conditions are favourable using only the supplied telescopic whip would be a vary good review to try to make. Not everyone can fit external dedicated antennas! Every review I have seen, the reviewers don't seem to be using the radio as is so how can you tell how much of the performance is down the the radio and how much to your antenna setup? A review of the radio across its coverage range using only the radio as it comes from the factory would be a fairer test I think? When I first saw you review this radio, my first thought was, it looks great I will buy one. But I cannot fit any external antennas at all so my radio should I buy one would oly ever be using the telescopic whip supplied. Could you please consider waiting until you find a favourable day propogation wise as found say on your Yaesu, to give the Raddy a fair crack at the whip (forgive the pun) and try a review with the radio as is?

Hi. I normally try all types of antenna. Last time i used a long wire then a loop and the built in whip for 20 and 40 meters. I used the whip for Uk CB FM and then my CB Antron for some SSB 11 meter. I will prob do the same on the newer radio. I tend to focus on testing at the weekend as I am at work in th week and there are normally more people on air then. As with any radio a lot comes down to your antenna set up but these type of radios should be able to work on an unbalanced wire.

I received a 2nd email August 8th on the new 1706 firmware, from Raddy. It had embedded instructions, so I decided to try it today. To my surprise it worked. I used a 16 GB micro card, and I formatted it ( even though it was new ) according to instructions. Followed the guide with good pictures from Raddy, and it did indeed update okay. I now have 1706 installed. I went into the menu and wanted to see the difference between " Unmuted, or Muted " Very little difference, but Unmuted seems to be a bit better. The volume on setting 1 is very slightly lower, and in my opinion, should be lower, but they are at least trying to improve it. I wanted to add, perhaps the key is formatting the micro SD card to Fat32 ( in their instructions ) I had a brand new never used SD card ( 16 GB Micro Center card ) and I still formatted it to Fat32. This may be the key to success ?

I’ve just returned mine, followed the updated firmware instructions to the letter and it bricked! Thankfully I got it from Amazon and a full refund was issued. Great radio, loved it….i really did. Another downer was Raddy support, I contacted them about the new antenna and they wouldn’t send me one as I got it from Amazon and they said my order number was wrong…screen shot of order and invoice provided but alas it was a you can’t have one 🤷 I may get another, I really did like it. The speaker is great. Does either of those sets have the new firmware? If not how can you be certain they haven’t fixed the mute? I’ll probably get another when the dust settles on this experience.

You're not missing much with the external loopstick on MW, the internal ferrite is better. The RFI generated by the radio seems to affect the external loopstick even if I remote mount it with a patch cable. I've been using my Passive loop to remove the noise from the signal.

I just got one . I am still learning the radio. I am impressed with the stock antenna i am picking SSB signials on 40 meters and picks up well. Have not tried the other antennas ports yet. What all aroumd portable anteena would you recommend for this radio?

I would say experiment with long wires first. Mini lops work quite well in high noise areas.

It is insane to spend $300 for a radio that has a defect like muted tuning programmed into the radio like a faulty engineering design flaw. i will not buy this radio until and unless RADDY comes out with a line of these radios that do NOT have muted tuning. Should be recalled.

Yeah the muted fast tuning should really be addressed asap. Its not actually a fault though as like most DSP radios its designed that way. The radio is not made by Raddy but branded by them so they cannot fix the issue themselves. I think the fault is the developers not researching their market before they release the product. However unlike the big players they will work to fix the issue.

​​@@CB-RADIO-UKthe muting on all these pure DSP radios as far as I know is because when it sends the instruction to the chip to change frequency, nasty noise is heard on the speaker. So they avoid it by muting. (Slightly different to the "soft muting" where they lower the volume between stations even when you're not tuning.) It's like before MP3 players did gapless. I don't think a firmware update alone can fix it, unless there's already additional hardware present that can help but isn't being used yet. The best solution would perhaps be to switch between two DSP chips, like double buffering.

The new firmware made this an awesome radio v1.707. ZHIWHIS is the same radio. The muting issue is fixed! FRS is good. Caution! Follow directions closely. You must format the memory card as FAT32. Not EXFAT or NTFS! You need to delete the partition on the card, make a 2gb partition and format it FAT32 so as not to brick your radio, large partitions cannot be formatted FAT32. 2GB is large enough. New cards come EXFAT 99% of the time, don’t use that… the reason I say this is my friend bricked his raddy that way.. If you don’t know how to do this learn first. Bricked radios are not warrantied. One other note, switch stepping to 10 for AM MW in US.. it defaults to 9

All this scare about bricked radios duhhhh. All they are saying is don't try this unless you know what you are doing and can follow instructions ..else all bets are off. That is the same for all electronics just not this radio.
