This video program explains the underlying concepts of radiation safety in everyday, non-technical language. It is intended for workers who do not require an extensive radiation protection program, but who need to have an understanding of the principles of radiation safety. Easy to understand analogies with situations we encounter in everyday life are used to explain the radiation safety story. For example, everyone is familiar with the characteristics of perfume, but few think of it in terms of contamination and irradiation. The simple and familiar things we know can help us gain a common sense understanding of radiation safety concepts. The program demonstrates that, while following proper safety procedures, radiation workers may assume additional radiation risks that are barely different than those of non-radiation workers. Thanks are given to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for use of their facilities and cooperation of their staff during the production of this video.
