I've commented on another review that DrPyspy NEVER misses. The fact they were able to create their own 3D models and turn them into sprites that fit the original near PERFECTLY is nothing short of amazing. I don't know anyone who can make such convincing "fakes". You should also check out their mod "Doom Delta", which is the most accurate recreation of Doom 1's alpha and beta stages to date.

One mistake in the video, the arch-vile sprites (and also reverant, chaingunner and spider mastermind) were actually made by the developers (DrPrSpy, sorry if i spelled it wrong) for the mod!

Having grew up with Playstation's (I don't think anyone called it the PSX back then) version of Doom, the almost supernatural ambient horror OST was the best, it actually gave you a feel that you were facing a very real, unholy satanic horror that wiped out the near entirety of a planetary space station's populace and left you, only you, all alone. In that sort of hopeless situation, one could only hope to God someone could save you. Which the music's projection of despair and a tinge of tragedy sort of signifies. Actual hell, Satan and damnation itself is real, and you may perish before you've redeemed yourself at the hands of the hordes of hell itself. And it only gets worse as you play Hell on Earth and come to find out entire cities have been devastated. No matter what, you are always alone. That's what I loved about the PS1's depiction of Doomguy; He's not some uber badass. He's just the survivor that now lives in horror, alone. With only the textscrolling at the end of either part of the game to tell you other humans even exist, that there's even hope. The sound design of every gunshot, every explosion echoing for what seems like miles also really punches home my point. Hell is empty and all the devils are here, leaving you as the Archangel Micheal of this tale. What makes it even more impressive is the official cover art of PSX Doom has it so Doomguy isn't even some marine, just some civilian with the unfortunate fate of being stuck in hell.

DrPyspy is one of the great modders to come out of the Doom community, he has a few other cool mods he's done too, such as Doom Delta. He's also working on a Team Fortress 2 like multiplayer Doom mod called Tomb Fetus.

If you go to the secret levels with this mod, they replaced Wolfenstein stuff with Mortal Kombat. The SS is now MK characters with their respective abilities, and text stories on each secret level have also been changed to be MK-related.

Growing up I was more exposed to the PlayStation version of Doom so for me everything from that version is isonic, including the monster sounds. PlayStation Doom is almost like a horror game in sone ways, which is a testament to just how important sound design is. I remember seeing a video review on an old YV program called Hi-Score back in 1997. I thought it looked so cool, especially the Pinky Demon and the Chaingun with the blue muzzle flash. Unfortunately I didn't own an N64 so I couldn't play it at the time. Thank god for sourceports. I also have fpund myself playing alot lf classic Doom revently. It really has that arcade-y feel to it where you can just start it up, play a level or two and then stop without having to dedicate hours to one session. Such a pure gaming experience that seems lost these days.

I think Doom 64’s monster sounds fit the vibe of the game well, and that the OG sounds, as good as they are, wouldn’t work as well in this setting. Also the Arachnotron’s death sound is just pure catharsis

Gregor Punchatz, Doom 64's artist behind the demon and player redesigns has shared online pictures and comments about what his take on the Archvile actually was gonna be like, a female humanoid entity who was entirely sculpted by himself to be digitalized, he commented in one interview that she was also supposed to have hair wich isn't present on the sculpture. Unfortunately we have no clue what his take on the Revenant, Mastermind and Chaingunner was gonna be like, however some sprites for the revenant's missles and archvile fire spell where found in a leaked demo of the game alongside many cut decoration and alternative weapon and item pick up sprites, sole proof that maybe, just maybe Midway games really did began to work on theirs implementation before deciding to cut them due to space limitations on the cartridges. Sculptures of a Hellhound and a red skined cyberdemon with dual launchers also exist, wich makes me wonder why they the 2020 remaster didn't included theses two cut ennemies for the Lost Levels episode, the dual Cyber could have worked really well as new final boss, while the two headed hellhound could have worked rather well as a revenant reskin.

Imo Doom 64 is the best classic Doom game ever made, the sprites of the enemies and the whole art style is just perfectlly matches to my taste, i love that dark sinister vibe combined with traditional doomlike gameplay, also i think you can check out another mod called "Doom CE" it's also a great mod that converts Doom 64 into the GZDoom engine, and have cooler graphical effects and more, im playing Doom CE a lot instead of than official 2020 remaster

Certainly looks interesting, but near the end of the video when you mentioned slower movement speed, I just thought of all the maps this would break, that not even allowing the use of jump would fix. Mods either need a replacement mechanic to fix this, or just not tweak movement speed at all. Otherwise, prepare to use the console to input commands a lot.

I think it looking darker is because of the different colouring with the new art style. Doom uses bright colours (as it's common with old games) but Doom 64 does not. Also I gotta disagree about the Doom OST being one of the best ever, I just gotta.

Doom 64 going for a more horror look and feel always felt interesting imo. The way I like to look at it is like this: Doom 1 and 2 go for high octane rock and metal to reflect Doomguy’s drive to get rid of the demons that took the lives of the fellow humans and his pet rabbit, Daisy. Doom 64 reflects Doomguy suffering from some form of PTSD (according to the story in the manual) and realizing his fight against the demons may not truly end. Doom 2016 and Eternal returning to metal reflects Doomguy’s rebirth as the Doom Slayer and how he’s just on a crusade to take down all the demons no matter what. Interestingly in Eternal there are occasions where the music does become more low key and somber sounding, and in these moments I’ve often noticed rabbits sometimes hidden in random corners that the Slayer can’t reach. It’s like Slayer is remembering his beloved pet and the sadness that he’ll never truly have her back (made sadder by how Slayer has a painting of him and Daisy, rabbit food, and a pet carrier in his Fortress but yet no rabbit in sight, poor guy loved Daisy and can’t seem to let her go).
