As many people have probably said, you should add AI nodes, aka. "info_nodes", and there's also "info_node_hints", which have different conditions for npcs. There's also "info_node_air" and "info_node_air_hint" which are for flying npcs. And finally, there's "info_node _climb", which are for Fast Zombies. Basically Fast Zombies can climb on "info_node_climbs". This mechanic can be seen in Ravenholm. NPCs also have "Squad Name" property, which means that let's say there's two Combine Soldiers have the same name in the "Squad Name" field, they both are in the same squad, obviously. And it means that they share information about enemies and will take turns attacking and covering each other.

Hammer is such an interesting rabbit hole to fall into. I am STILL learning new things, and I've been doing this for over a decade!
@social_ghost Жыл бұрын
My observation is that the slow zombies work best in tight corridors, small rooms and areas with lots of blind corridors. I think Resident Evil 2's police station and Ravenholm are a good examples of this kind of design. Also having slow zombies enter in from a closed off room behind the player to cut off their retreat while fighting a stronger enemy would be a pretty good trick.
@DrHammerr Жыл бұрын
Here's a neat trick. If I recall, there's a handful of useful Prefabs that exist in the base hl2 prefabs folder (common/Half-Life 2/bin/Prefabs, I think? I've since moved mine elsewhere). One of those is a npc_soldier_assault prefab. Effectively, combine will rush from their spawn point towards some assault nodes, all while still shooting at the player. So you can have them breach a door or enter from another room and then run into cover, allowing for quite a few interesting encounters. I personally think these feel a lot better than just entering a room with a bunch of combine already hanging around. There's also some for sleeping zombies, which I've made great use of. These are also a good entrypoint into more complicated scripting, but even just ploppin' them into a map and fiddlin' about can yield very good results. I also like adding the occasional npc block volume. This tool texture stops npcs from rushing the player and leaving their cover, without having to mess with the nav mesh at all. Prefabs in general are super useful, since you can make your own, and it saves SO much time. I use them for complex logic (the batteries and floodlights in feralis obscurum, for example) as well as basic geo (Stairs and doorways). Just gotta make sure you read up on them, as there's a lot of nuance I can't cram into a youtube comment (name iterators, origin alignment, the "skip trick", etc).

I feel like a very under utilized feature of the Half-Life zombies in general with most mods is that they can smack physics items like barrels at you. I'm curious how that would feel if you added it to the tighter zombie encounter you made towards the end.
@QSHV Жыл бұрын
Soft time pressures (such as weak enemies that spawn infinitely behind the player, or a patrolling gunship the player is unable to destroy) can make an otherwise methodical combat encounter much more engaging. This will also make the combat encounter more difficult, so additional health and resources may be needed to accommodate the scenario.

I think the coolest enemy encounter you can do is an ambush type scenario. I made a map once, based in the city, and you fight some metrocops. It was in this courtyard area. Basically one shoots a flare off, and they come around from all sides, one breaks a window, the other comes out onto a walkway, and some try to rappel. They wouldnt all come at the same time, they wouldnt all swarm you at once so you wernt just hailed from bullets, but I think it was just really fun.

If you want interesting combat, hint nodes are the go-to. They pretty much dictate a variety of different "hints" to the NPCs on everything from where to hide when reloading or under heavy fire, where to go when something is detected, and where to jump if allowed, just to name a few. Tie that all together with basic nodes to influence pathfinding and you'll have a far more intensive fighting (and exhaustive mapping) experience.

Just like others pointed out - info_nodes help npcs navigate your map, and for fast_zombies - jump automatically if they can't reach you. One thing i'd like you to try out is info_node_hint with parameter "hint" set to "Override jump permission". It'd make npcs like citizens or combine soldiers to jump down. Helps to make my maps more dynamic.

If you want to check it that would be pretty cool but it's pretty basic imo, I spent a good chunk of both weekend mornings at the time on guides and trial and error until I got something I was satisfied with! I was doing the same actually. HL2 is a very packed game where you mostly find anything you can possibly need for a FPS game. Many varieties of ranged and melee enemies, environmental threats and rules you define by applying explosive stuff, low visibility or using trigger_hurt directly - all good. It will take so much time to implement all these things in different engine for your game so it is reasonable to test things that are actually working.
@JHenryEden Жыл бұрын
Yo, Rad. Try a Displacement for a more natural look. they cause your map to have more natural-looking deformations that cause the unfiformal shaped enemies to alter in height as they hit a high or low point on the "soil" and will make you readjust your crosshairs from just stubbornly 90° holding your gun towards the horizon and hitting the enemy 100% of all times hit. maybe you could make a crater in the middle of the map that one can use as cover, maybe the map is an active battlefield where a slow-moving gun-turret will actively fire in a direction if you keep in a place for too long and if you hide in the crater, the shells will just zip by you or just impact nearby. think of the bradley tanks from hl1 or the turret from DM_CROSSFIRE (my favorite map back then)

Playing around with NPCs and AI is my favorite thing to do in Hammer. It's just really fun to see what kind of gameplay can emerge. Have you tried playing with behaviors like ai_goal_assault or ai_goal_standoff with Combine Soldiers and metrocops? It can be a little complicated to set up, but I think it can add a lot to an encounter. Standoff goals are my favorite as they let you control NPCs taking cover. You can make them prefer cover behind a plane set at an entity called ai_battle_line. Using hint nodes with the node type "crouch cover low" is really important for standoffs. I also really like making human NPCs jump between points. It can be a little tricky to set up as well because you need to set the flag "override jump capabilities" on a hint node, but you also need to make sure that the distance between that node and the node to jump to is within the right arc for NPCs to be able to jump.
@1upD Жыл бұрын
I only realized this when other comments pointed it out, but there's no nodes! info_node entities are so important. The placement of nodes in the node graph can be the single most deciding factor in how the AI plays out as the AI needs to be able to use the node graph to "see" the path it can take to get to any location. Hint nodes are also important in letting NPCs know about the world. Without nodes, there's basically no NPCs - they're like turrets with some limited ability to approach things near them.
@RadiationHazardYT Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately, I didn't know about the nodes. Perhaps I'll make a "Advanced Experiment" video once I get the hang of it.
@chibisayori20 Жыл бұрын
@@RadiationHazardYT I mean i guess you could make a map without nodes but with creative NPC placement, perhaps a linear shooter on a flying plane where you shoot somewhat stationary enemies? But yeah, without AI nodes, NPCs have no idea how to path to you
@samo6704 Жыл бұрын
If you haven't done these but put down some info nodes so the ai can move around the level better. for the combine give them squad names so they act as a squad and not just by them self. it allows them to cover each other and move around the level to cut the player off. it found in there settings. metro police with man hack will help with variety and making the player move around the level.
