Yeah as someone who does web design, bootstrap and modern design leads to things looking pretty cookie cutter. Valve in general seems to not just fit the mold with it like with the Dota 2 patch notes sometimes. They always write so self aware too and not like fully super corporate "we are proud to announce" and more "Look we know this had been left untouched, our bad"

As a dota player as well, they tend to be quite funny, which is not usual for patch notes AND taking into account that the company "doesn't really communicate". Valve is great, over-all.

Genius way to promote the game and let people who've never played the game, play it. Also there are tons of changes for modders and mappers with the engine improvements. 4 new maps 25 years after release which all look beautiful in their own right and Uplink is finally officially on Steam. You can tell that this update was a labor of love.

Honestly, that documentary was something I needed to see. At the end, they were just passionate people diving into new territory. People who wanted to make something great. People who felt lost. Who were afraid of failing to deliver a good game. It was comforting to see that even genre defining games have people behind them who also experienced things like uncertainty and struggle inside and outside of their job. Honestly, I'm so happy they released something so special as a one hour long video of them sharing their experience, not just what they accomplished.

It is amazing indeed. They fixed so many things we never though will get fixed and added new features in the process as well (such as fixing old infamous issues including pushable objects beng tied to framerate, the widescreen FOV, and weapon bobbing got added back, holy shit). Not to mention the UI and HUD systems have been fully overhauled. And the best thing, is that it already teases more down the road, so much so the line that mentions the addition of vehicles for modders in the changelog mentions a "full SDK update" will come in the future. It's a great time to be a HL fan, wow.

You can still buy it on steam or if you had it before it will still will be in your steam library. It was just delisted so that it won't confuse new half-life players who will think half-life source is better than original(it isn't).

They did change the brightness and gamma settings. Originally it defaulted to what games used for CRT monitors.

It's good publicity. If I had to guess, their goal is to artificially pull people into the game so as a more active title its modding scene will explode. Having an update just double all of the limits of your engine is kind of nuts.

The only problem I have with the models option is that when you disable the option for the original models is that the HD models are used when it should have been the other way around to disable the HD models like in previous versions. Also, for some reason Blue Shift now crashes when launching after this update was released.

If you want to play any mod or Opposing Force and Blue Shift you need to go to betas and change the version to *pre- 25th anniversary build* and you should be able to play them with no problem.

I love this new update, i just hope they push that patch to make the expansions and mods compatible with the new build. Right now Blue Shift, OP4, CS1.6, TFC, and a whole slew of mods are broken with the new UI. The proper HUD scaling is huge, but I love the physics patches even if they make speedrunning the steam version impossible. They fixed things that have been broken for so long I didn't even know they were broken, I thought object boosting was just the engine being janky.

Out of curiosity, I checked out how Opposing Force looks like after the change. Typical for Opposing Force, I think they kind of forgot about it :d It has the OG HL Ui font, but the backround doesn't fit in the screen, so it gets all blurry and the Opposing Force logo is cut. The rest works fine tho, so I shouldn't complain

The OG menu hit me like a ton of bricks. For a split second, I nearly felt like a kid again booting it up and seeing that. I was born in '96, and one of the earliest memories I can ever recall is being sat down at a computer chair, and seeing this menu in front me at the age of 4. I like to think that Half-life is the reason I love video games today.

The problem is, any new Half Life game has to live up to people's expectations, which is a hard thing to do. We want the same, recognisable HL universe, but different and better. Modern games take so long to produce, require so many people and cost huge amounts of money, it's no wonder companies struggle to produce new AAA titles and get their money back.

@@another3997 It wouldn't be as hard if Valve released at least some new Half-Life titles, be they spin-offs or shorter experiences a-la Episodes I & II on a consistent basis. I don't mean anything as extreme as a new title every year like COD, but every 3-4 years, so that whoever is still at Valve is familiar with the property and knows how to best make games for it. You're not gonna be as passionate about something if you only get to work something new for the property every 12 or so years. Furthermore, talent comes and goes. What truly made great Half-Life games so great was a team that functioned like a well-oiled machine; it wasn't just one single person behind everything. Now, when it comes to AAA, I'd argue a big reason why they cost so much money and also thus need a lot to break even is bloat. And I don't mean software bloat or code spaghetti - I mean useless people sitting in middle management who's sole purpose in life is to be the red tape that ensure a two-hour fix turns into a month-long discussion with meetings, charts and lots of talking and very little doing.

I'm really happy to see this update and the documentary was awesome (very happy to hear them talk more about Prospero), but I still feel like the best way to play HL1 on PC is with MMod. Just last night I replayed the first few chapters in both versions and I feel like I noticed fewer NPC and AI issues in MMod which made it feel that much more polished than the anniversary update.

Always wanted to try getting into the Half-Life series after being a longtime TF2 player but never got around to it. Half-Life Complete for $6 was the perfect excuse to finally add them to my library, and aside from a few spongier enemies I don't enjoy much and a few gimmick chapters, I can say, with no nostalgia bias of any sort, that HL1 really impresses me even outside the context of its initial release date. You could add enemy soldiers to a $60 game in 2023 with the exact same AI as the ones in this game, and I would still consider them on the higher end of average at the absolute worst.

The Steam menu used to be a really basic VGUI list, like in Half-Life 2. They brought back the animated titlecard and stylized buttons from the original launcher, but it is still the Steam menu under the hood which is great as the original would have to disable the renderer and switch to 640x480 on pause.

Pre-Steam I'd played it at a friends house, and when I begrudgingly joined Steam about a year after it's release to continue playing Counter-Strike, I don't think I ever actually touched it; despite my CS key giving it to me along with, Blue Shift, OpFor, DoD, Team Fortress and Ricochet.
