What I love about this mod is that it leaves a bunch of early geometry untouched in areas it REALLY shouldn't. The Caves and Wasteland Cliffs are remnants of GoldSrc brush terrain, and the devs went ahead and slapped Minecraft 4k-HD Texture Pack images over it all.

It's clear that the main issue that plagued Build 2046 and DSN was lack of direction. The creator of the mod knew how to make somewhat decent looking maps visually, but he didn't know how to optimize them and how to make proper scripted sequences and level transitions. You might be interested in looking at other projects that the creator of Build 2046 has worked on after Der Schwarze Nebel was abandoned due to lack of interest from the new team, mainly due how disjointed and disorganized development was. First one was "Cinematic Mod: Awakening" - a spiritual successor of Cinematic Mod: 2013, but more unhinged. The guy wanted to add semi-openworld hub locations with side quests; day/night cycle; expanded locations in original levels and stuff like that. Funnily enough, it was greenlit by FakeFactory himself apparently (when creator of Build 2046 reached out to him via e-mail for permission to make his own version). As expected it was abandoned because the project was too ambitious for just one guy to handle. The second project was a short-lived dumpster-fire called "Opposing Force 2: Lost". And oh boy, what a hot mess that was. Imagine someone taking the original Opposing Force 2 Demo and slap Build 2046 on top of it. Because it used Cinematic Mod as a base, all custom weapons and enemies were removed too, leaving you with reskinned Cinematic Mod with Opposing Force 2 maps with no gameplay.

The Borealis maps (not the E3 one to be clear, the one that starts you off next to the tugboat) in the later versions as well as the Odell model are ripped straight from Missing Information, with some changes made to make it less obvious, so yeah they did take at least some maps and one asset straight from other mods. MI changed the name on the hull of the ship to "Hyperborea" where it originally just said "Borealis", plus a number of other changes that are present in this mod's version like the displacement icebergs being 1:1 with MI's.

Hello from Russia! As a person who participated in testing this mod in 2014-15, I will add a few words. Although a bit late. The developer of this mod is from Russia. A guy who began to identify himself as a girl and at the same time loved everything German. Loved it very much. A person with a rather difficult fate. Especially considering how such people are treated in Russia. Her name was Julia (that's the name she took for herself). I talked to her for quite a long time and tested almost every version of this mod, except for the earliest ones. The main problem with the whole concept of development was that no one in the team studied the lore of the beta version. Maps were made according to the principle of "oh, look, this is a great idea, let's implement it!". Even if it had nothing to do with the Beta. At the same time, Julia had some special ideas about the general style of this mod, which had nothing to do with the atmosphere of the beta. She really liked Cinematic Mod. That's why there's so much content from it. Although, it wasn't originally planned for it to be there. It was her personal initiative, with which many in the team disagreed (me too). No one understood what we were trying to do and why? There wasn't even a rough plan or any concept for the finished mod. At least I didn't see him. Maybe he was at Julia's. As a result, everyone just lost interest in developing this mod. First of all, Julia herself. It seems that at some point, only Julia and I remained from the entire D-Team. Then Julia renamed the team to NervenHölle-Team, and the mod from "BUILD 2046" to "DER SCHWARZE NEBEL". And then she took up development, first "OPPOSING FORCE 2", and then "Cinematic Mod Awakening" (She said she received permission from FakeFactory.). But nothing came of this either. One of the reasons was that stolen assets from STALKER, METRO 2033 and even Crisis were used in the development of these mods. For which she received letters from GSC and 4A Games with claims and demands to remove the content. Unfortunately, the last time I spoke with her was in 2018. Then she tried to work on "Cinematic Mod Awakening". Her old pages on social networks are now inactive, she does not respond to messages. So I can't even say if she is alive at all. I hope she is okay now. From myself, I will say that it was an interesting time, and I really enjoyed being a part of history. Sorry for the bad English, I use a translator. Don't the glasses make the lens flare worse though, regardless of the stigmatism? How do we explain Tim Sweeney!? Like bad auto exposure transitions are easily explained away by bad transition lenses that he has, and chromatic aberration is easily explained by all the Vaseline he smears on it.. and motion blur.. maybe cuz his brain is broken... But the lens flares... Isn't that just going to be made worse buy glasses unless they have the right coatings and polarizations? I don't have glasses, I have perfect eyesight, But I was a camera operator for a while... And you'd be amazed at the effort that we would go through in order to not have any of the screen effects that seem to be obsessed about by game developers nowadays...

Not gonna lie that 4.91 version actually looked good to me, I was impressed especially considering what came before it, it appealed to my dark and gritty instincts (lmao) but overall yeah it was a big disappointment, I never checked this mod given that I'm not a fan of Cinematic mod even though I do believe CM had good things going for it, it has a lot dissonance and this mod is in a way the same (which is to be expected), lots of random things and an art direction and random decisions that collide with each other constantly, but ultimately it doesn't bother me since it was a beta or alpha mod, had they released this as a finished mod I would've been way more critical and lost it, but if I was the creator of this I wouldn't have made it public in a trillion years unless I made a consistent art direction and improved it to very high standards otherwise I would have been embarrassed to release it but I guess that's just me. OH and that crane model obsession was pretty funny at the end, you can tell they were proud of it but it got out of hand and at the end they were just trolling with it, I bet people called them out on it and they just doubled down lol, a very Cinematic Mod-esque decision there lol.

Two things, the cinematic mod pistol is not a USP Match, its a Mark-23, which simply is a more beefy "offensive" USP based pistol that fires a heavier caliber. The Lost Coast map is probably included the way that it is due to the anecdote that the entire level was a cut level of Highway 17 repurposed for the Loast Coast tech demo.

So the Mark 23 isn't developed off of the USP, although they were developed around the same time and they went through some of the same testing... They were developed for two entirely different purposes and are somewhat different, despite both being tilting barrel browning style pistols. As well true to its name the USP, or universal self-loading pistol, but in Deutsch, is in pretty much every caliber and pretty much every style that could fit for a pistol.. that includes 45 and 45 plus p, which was the round that both made and sank the MK 23, in that apparently was hard to obtain but I don't know much about the details.. But without a plus p, the ballistic performance of 45 isn't great. Even with the longer barrel of the Mark 23.. The USP was an attempt at correcting mistakes that lost potential market with their p7 pistols.. (which are possibly the most German pistols ever made lol) in both manufacturing and and the needs of the secific markets which ended up in its near infinite varieties lol, but a lot of that was a later development.. The core conceit though is that they had been developing the pistol for the law enforcement markets, and because of the offensive weapon program under JSOC, they were able to co-op the data and refined the USP which made it to market before the MK23 was delivered and put into service.. A lot of the future iterations were made as a reaction to complaints about the MK23 and certain downsides.. like it's overall bulk and weight.. which were further refined. This is more of a lessons learned, than a actual merging or iteration of the two... But it wouldn't be until much later that there was a tactical variant that was a canonical replacement for the MK3, and over the years have seen further enhanced and diverse variations spreading into as many markets as possible Just the idea that there's a size range from the usp compact, to the full fat USp tactical, which eventually adopted the polygonal rifling that the MK-23 had, while also taking advantage of the overtested barrel construction that the MK23 spurred on a count of its requirements right at the start. Essentially you can shoot the same plus p round out of a USP that is designed for it, as you can the Mark ACP 23... You just need the USP that does that lol. Which would also include a match grade USP, or the USp match lol... Although I don't know if the USB tactical was also match-grade, which was one of the claim to fames of the Mark acp. And as much as I love the MK23, because.. it's it's just fg cool lol.. The entire shift, while practical, was definitely on the more boring side compared to the direction the p7 was going.. and we're really only just now seeing that kind of pistol make a comeback.. which is always incredibly difficult because unless you're someone like h&k, coming up with new things is a great way to kill your company in firearm design and manufacturing.. It was kind of interesting though.. h&k went from the space magic company to the overpriced reliable company, and I feel like.. I like the USP is probably the one of the most boring yet also cool pistols ever..

I can’t remember if I was able to get far in this mod when I played in the late 2010s but I sure did play Der Schwartz Nebel (it’s hard to spell that second word well) around the same time which believe it or not is even _worse_ and goes completely off the rails to the Half Life universe on several later maps such as the ugly grey rock wasteland having you climb out of canyons before navigating endless plains of the same rock like a rocky lakebed (which it sort of is) while under attack from either a chopper or a gunship, that weird softlocked cafeteria building map is back and surrounding maps at this point take place on hilly cliffs above a lush green forest. In the beta universe. Which has the air exchange. This & the canteen map are where I rage quit the mod back when I played & looked for better stuff in later years like Dark Interval & RTBR. For both Build 2046 & DSN, to quote a famous FPS loving vtuber: “Fuck this game with a pineapple! It’s not done! It needs to go back in the oven for another few months. How undercooked is this game? Gordon Ramsey: “It’s fucking RAW!””

I saw, heard and even spoke to that person about six years ago and I'm not sure that it's correct to refer to this person as you do however I don't want to open this can of warm. From what I remember at least this person was a good friend to me with quite unique thoughts despite of controversial works and identity.
