The old MAPP gas burned a lot hotter than propane but the new MAP gas is only rated to be 130 degrees hotter than propane. The old MAPP gas has been unavailable for many years but people think it is the same as the old suff. Sadly, it's not. Thanks for the video.

Could you explain the difference between soldering and brazing with Mapp Gas, and welding using MIG or TIG. Looks like you were brazing with what you were using. Thanks for showing us that it does work. Regarding the original JB Weld, a great product that takes at least a full day to cure (unless you can figure out how to speed up the process with heat without ruining the job), I used it back in the day to fill up corrosion holes in the mating surface of the aluminum head of a fifties-era 6-cylinder Mercedes sedan I rescued from the scrap yard, then sanded it smooth by hand, and re-installed the head with a new head gasket. I drove it for 8 years without any head problems, then bartered it away for furniture for a new house.

@@lonelyboii93 I bought a big torch tip with igniter on the handle from harbor freight along with the aluminum rods & then map gas from autozone. I thought I had it on the first attempt but I didn't. So 2nd time I put about a pea size amount around the pinhole leak n it's holding so far. It's an aluminum race radiator that I had polished when I bought it from sum1 on ebay so I didn't want to take an L on it. TIP: don't melt the rod onto the hole, it won't stick. But keep putting it in the flame so it stays hot so that when the aluminum is hot, the rod won't cool it down & it'll flow with minimal effort.

i can't tell for one if the tube I'm working on is aluminum or brass. I think it's brass but when I scratch it looks bright like aluminum. Either way I'm using the Mapp gas and the tube gets hot quick, so hot it breaks off before I can get the alum rod to melt. Not sure what to do?

just poked a hole in my radiator. Looking through oreilly now they have a firepower brand brazing rod at 99c. It doesnt have great reviews on amazon but some look like user error. Ill have to take a look at home depot, they have a benzomatic al3 aluminum rod for 4 dollars. Do you think the rod with the higher melting point will hold betteR?

Thanks for the reply. I bought another brand rod at home depot but it seemed that the channels in the radiator would start collapsing before the rod would. I went to harbor freight and picked up the alumi weld rods and those worked much better. However by that time i had 3 additional holes so i just ended up replacing the radiator. If i wouldve bought the alumiwelds to start i problably couldve patched it up. Kind of sucked but oh well, atleast i got some practice.

Thanks for a great video! I am curious if the weld blocks the flow of water in that flat tube or just reduces the flow. If it blocks the flow entirely, couldn't I just cut the flat tube and fold it on itself really tight? I understand just one flat tube out of commission will not affect the cooling performance of the radiator. Is good to have a plan B. Thanks again!

colorocko1 The aluminum is a heat sink, and it requires maintaining a high enough temperature, like from Mapp gas (now called Mapp Pro because they changed the formula), while you're trying to get the silver solder or aluminum rod to flow. It also takes some luck to keep from ruining the radiator while learning how to fix it.

I know this is an old question but hopefully this will help someone else that will need it. Soldering is the process he is doing if the temp is 450° F or less. Brazing is this process @ roughly 650° F or more. This process can be done as welding with an aluminum rod but with Oxy - Acetylene torch. Normally this is to hot of a process for this thin of material. The biggest difference between all of these processes is temperature and the filler used. I believe Mapp gas is much more than 300° F difference as this guy was saying. The bigger difference than can be made there is the torch head used. Not between each gas compared to each other but with the same gas used vs different torch heads. I will say the bernzomatic T8400 is definitely worth the money spent. Don't buy cheap torch heads. You'll end up regretting it.
