The Results Solid from Radical is claimed to be "The hookingest ball in the game of bowling". Ryan "Barks" Barker finds out if that statement is overhyped! Comparing it to the Zing Solid, another strong asymmetric solid ball.

Hey everyone. We’ve noticed a lot of comments about the layouts used on the 2 balls in this video. Normally, we’d use the same layout on both balls, however, Barker had a couple of different concerns. First, he didn’t want the Results Solid to overlap the Zing, but rather, be a good compliment to it. Secondly, with the Mass Bias number being so high on the undrilled ball, he was worried that maxing out that number would cause the ball to roll too early, and lose energy too quickly. The layout used on the Results Solid was recommended by one of his reps at Brunswick, who initially did a pin up drilling similar to Barker’s Zing, and saw a ball reaction that was less than ideal. For him, the 35 x 4 x 60 layout was able to provide more shape downlane versus the pin up drilling. We expected the Results Solid to be comparable to the Zing in the amount of overall hook, with a bit of a smoother motion. What we got instead was much less overall hook, and unpredictability at the breakpoint. Hope this clears up some confusion.

Which is why this video should be taken down because if he didn't want two balls to overlap each other by putting two different layout on the ball why would you make a video comparing it to the zing that's just plain dumb.

@@elr2141979 exactly that is why you can give it a good comparison back in the day used to go to alot of demo days. all balls drilled neutral so you can see how they roll and react, went to a brunswick day in 07 and was tossing all their new stuff then tossed the fury on the regular house shot with it drilled neutral and it destroyed the pins. bought one. got it back to the pro shop to drill it and the pro said no you need to drill it different for the way you roll and throw, took me a lot of convincing for him to not do that but keep it neutral, first nite outt. 750, next week. two 800s and a 300 with it... had that in my bag for years

I believe that for a better comparison, they should have been drilled the same. I have one and it is drilled to read the mid lane and it hooks hard. I really believe the layout is not good for that ball. I threw the Results solid and bowled really well. And I'm left handed. Try a different layout, maybe even the same as the Zing. Yea we agree, for solely comparison purposes should be the same layout, but barks wanted a compliment to the zing, to actually put in his tournament bag. So his Brunswick rep suggested that layout and it just didn't do what he expected, (he expected it to hook an equal amount and be much smoother, but it became unpredictable and wasn't even close with the hook potential

@@jrproshop Ok. I get that. His hands position looked liked a really rolly one. Was that intentional? Maybe the same layout but a weaker hand position may get close to the results that he wants. Just a thought. That's what I've done when I want a delayed and smoother reaction from an aggressive ball like when I first got the Conspiracy.

Well this is easily solved by doing another comparison with a similar layout on a Zing. Also if 70% of ball motion is coverstock, then excluding extreme layouts (like a no flare layout), when i hear that a ball is "the hookingest ball in history", i expect it to go to the 7 in on short pattern.Yeah i know it will use most of it's energy early and will not be skid/flippy, but because it is a strong cover and with some surface oob, it should hook at your feet. Now if Mo intended to say that this ball has "the most potential for hook in the most lane conditions", then it could be something to explore. And even then, it would not be due to core because we have seen other balls with stronger cores and asymmetries, but because of coverstock. On the other hand, i doubt they would make a ball weaker than a Zing AND promote it as stronger at the same time.

I seem to have much more success with symmetrical balls. They are more consistent for me. I also prefer a pearl cover. I recently threw my first 300, with a Radical Rave with a pin up drilling. I also have an Intel Pearl, that I match up with really well. I met Mo around 2013 I believe. He fit me for a Guru Mighty. I also do well with it, but get more use out of the symmetrical balls. I used to buy a ton of balls, mostly because of the shelf appeal. I think I have things covered currently, and don’t have an actual need for anything new. Although I’m always interested to see if I’m missing out. Thanks for your review.

The pin down layout of 35 x 4" x 60 that you put on the Results Solid will lay the core down sooner, lose rotation sooner, and roll more forward when it hits friction. That is why it hooked less. Pin down balls will reduce the intermediate diff and the total diff, therefore reducing the ball motion. You have to lay the ball out correctly to get the desired motion. I would have drilled the Results Solid with either the max flip layout of 70 x 3 1/2" x 20, or the most versatile layout of 45 x 4" x 35. The pin down layout is more for control and will not give you the backend response as compared to the stronger layouts. Layouts are more critical now because you can no longer use balance holes to enhance ball motion. The Brunswick ball rep that gave you that layout recommendation was a very poor one in my opinion. If you had both the Zing and the Results Solid with the same strong layout, the comparison would have been more air. But comparing a strong layout on the Zing to a much weaker pin down layout on the Results Solid is an extremely unfair comparison of ball motion.
@jrproshop
@jrproshop 3 жыл бұрын
The concern I had with doing a pin up layout had to do with maxing out the intermediate diff. I’ve drilled balls like the Real One with taller pins, and while in theory they should flip harder, they would instead use their energy too early and be really lazy. There’s definitely a sweet spot for me on asymmetrics, somewhere between 0.014 and 0.020 on the intermediate diff scale. I find balls like that give me a more consistent reaction. But to each their own I guess.
@danlorwil083175
@danlorwil083175 3 жыл бұрын
@@jrproshop Smaller VAL angles between 20 and 30 degrees have a longer skid phase and a shorter hook and roll phase. The smaller VAL angles are good when you need a "down the lane and kick on the back" reaction usually at the beginning of lane transition or breakdown. 35 to 45 degree VAL angles more versatile, all-purpose and are usually more continuous and do not jerk off the spot as hard as the smaller VAL angles. 60 to 85 degree VAL angles are generally used in pin down layouts. High VAL angles will roll the most forward and lay the core down the soonest when the ball hits friction. The pin down layouts have the longest transition because they pick up the soonest, hook the smoothest, and roll the most forward off the spot and straighter through the pins. Core shape determines ball motion. It is all about selecting the right ball, choosing the right layout, and putting the proper surface on the ball. If you do not have all three covered, you will not have proper ball motion. Your style, being left handed, would be ideally suited with the all-purpose or most versatile layout of 45 x 4" x 35 as a good benchmark asymmetrical layout.

Putting the strongest possible drilling layout on a bowling ball and claiming that this is the hookiest ball in the history is totally misleading. In order to prove that one should put the most strong layouts in all other competing balls in the market and compare them. Rarely do league players need to put the most strong layput on a ball. A ball that is claimed to be the hookiest in history should provide a distinguished motion compared to other balls no matter what layout you put on it, provided that it is somewhat within regular drilling boundaries. That is not the case with this ball. In addition Radical should probably stop marketing their balls being the hookiest as that is not a feature of primary importance. A ball in order to be successful needs to be controllable when needed to and be able to get matched with multiple players' styles. That's why Storm/Rotogrip/900 Global/Motiv dominate the market even though they constitute a lot less brands compared to the ones owned by Brunswick.

Stardust Bowl, Addison IL. Bowled against someone using the results on PBA Dragon pattern yesterday and the ball was hot garbage. My axiom pearl hooks more than that ball 🥺 thanks for the review. Keep em coming!

I think the ball is very condition and bowler specific. It could be great for the right bowler, but it certainly wasn’t the ball for me.

You guys are hilarious. You obviously didn't look at the drill sheet. If you're fist number is 35, you didn't drill it to hook on the backend. I have the ball and have the sheet. The maximum flip layout first number is 70. I just used it yesterday in league on the Carmen Salvino 44 foot pattern and won money. Why don't you have Mo on and talk about it?

We did, we went even further and talked to one of the Brunswick reps about it (knows barks well) and this is the layout he suggested for him, he has a gap in his bag where he needs a smooth tank, and thought this would be the perfect ball for it. Guess not ☹️

@@jrproshop why would you drill a review ball for a guy and drill it to fill a gap ? then get snarky on the review, well you wont have any radical balls to review in the future unless you put down some greenbacks, what tards.....

The only fake news is that there was any sort of valid analysis here... pretending to understand core numbers and mocking the leading core designer in the history of bowling is not a good look. The story of this ball's hook potential is the textured solid cover.
@BowlingScience

Looks like you smoothed that out on the ball spinner too... there is a reason box surface has 500 under it and just a light 3000 on top. We tested with 5 different layouts, 2 oil patterns and multiple surfaces before claiming "hookingest". If you take any ball with hook potential and smooth it out with less surface and a huge VAL, it will differ from its potential when used with surface and a hooking layout...

We’re here to give honest reviews and we can’t play favourites and mislead our viewers. Just because barks didn’t like it doesn’t mean that everyone won’t. The layout is 35x4x60 puts the pin the ring, that's a super strong core angle and pin to pap distance, and for it to not even come close to the zing in terms of boards covered is surprising.
@BowlingScience
@BowlingScience 3 жыл бұрын
60 degrees is not a strong VAL. Also, angle ratio determines shape. When the first angle is nearly half the second angle, this promotes more forward roll. Hey, honest is good, but a smoothed out pin down ball isn't gonna tell you anything about the hook potential of a bowling ball. I suggest Innovative's Advanced Pro Shop class... they can help refine your understanding of layouts and core numbers.

The Results comes with 5 recommended layouts. The one you chose is similar to the least hooking, flaring layout. Don't want to mislead your viewers...

Haha you said the balls hook potential is in the cover stock, so then how does a slightly larger Val angle make this ball hook 9 boards less than the zing ? This ball doesn't even come close.

Lost a sub. Felt like more of a video to trash Radical than anything else. Drill one ball to be angular, but the other ball to not be angular and then complain that it isn't angular? oooooooooooooook.

To defend on 37 feet it should of hooked entire lane even for that layout. Especially for asym but I am a storm guy.

Hey J Hamm, sorry to hear that, obviously point was not to trash radical, the zing performs amazingly and is one of barks fav balls. Carter is right, that ball with that layout should perform pretty equal to the zing in boards hooked, but wasn't even close. The point was to make it smoother and rounder down lane to compliment the zing. But it was unpredictable and didn't hook nearly as much as expected.

@@jrproshop I understand where you guys were trying to come from, but I think it could have been executed better. Maybe it would have been better to compare it to the pearl Results to show the different motions? I just think trashing the ball isn’t the answer when it’s really the layout that was the problem.
