Zoo Tycoon 2 is a business simulation video game developed by Blue Fang Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios and MacSoft. Originally released for Microsoft Windows, Zoo Tycoon 2 is also available for Windows Mobile, PDA, and Mac OS X, although expansions are not included in the Mac version. A Nintendo DS version, titled Zoo Tycoon 2 DS, was released in 2008. The gameplay revolves around creating suitable exhibits for animals through habitat modifications (ground cover, water, elevation, foliage and rocks and a variety of items including food, enrichment and shelter) which fulfill the animal's needs (habitat, hunger, thirst, stimulation, privacy, sleep, social, exercise). Guests will visit the zoo to see the animals, and they also have needs that need to be fulfilled through scenery and buildings (hunger, thirst, bathroom, seating, entertainment). Zoo Tycoon 2 features three gameplay modes: Campaign, Challenge and Freeform. In Campaign mode, the player plays through a scenario in an existing zoo and is assigned different goals to complete, such as achieving a certain fame level, caring for rescued animals, or breeding endangered species. In Challenge mode, the player starts a zoo from scratch and will be given random challenges which can be accepted or rejected. In both of these modes, players will have limited money to manage and will start with limited access to animals and items, with more becoming available as zoo fame level increases. The last mode, Freeform, allows the player create a zoo from scratch with unlimited money and access to all animals and items from the start.

It's a shame that the mod never got completed. The team drama really stopped it from being completed in full. Also Leaf, there is a patch on TRT/Download Library that fixes a lot of RR's bugs.

Radical Remake was mandatory for teenage me, but now as an adult, I'm finding myself more and more nostalgic and appreciative of the cartoony aesthetic of the original game. Yet, also, it's getting long enough that I'm nostalgic of the remakes too! It's a dilemma.

The sad thing is they never even put out an official statement for why the team ended up falling apart and disappearing. They had shown off WIP remakes for the Lion, said the African Wild Dog was nearing completion but never showed anything of it off, and also showed off renders for visually finished animals like the Great White, Tapir and Caribou... and then poof, they went radio silent. Also, looking back on the RR project as a whole, one thing it suffered from throughout its whole production time was how long any progress took. For context, the recent Extinct Animals Remakes mod has been able to near completely remake the entirety of that expansion with completely new models and skins in AD-grade quality (while still also remaining faithful to the original designs in terms of their colorations) while also giving them completely new behaviors and mechanics (One such example being Mastodons not only having tusk variations, but they can also break them in fights which turns the broken tusk into an enrichment item). Only a small handful of animals haven't been finished yet because the modders needing some down time. Those modders in question only numbering in the 2-3 range IIRC. Compare that to RR which at some points had like 8/10+ active modders behind it yet throughout... eight years I think it was. They were only able to just nearly complete the base game roster (something they weren't able to completely do 'cause someone who was inactive for 6 outta those 8 years proclaimed only he could work on the lion) and the MM roster, and did a handful of ES and AA animals while EA got relegated to only two remakes because they didn't want to cover any extinct species outside of some recently extincts (Of which they only did the Dodo and Thylacine (which wasn't even fully finished since Hendrix retired from ZT2 modding before he could finish its custom animations)) since they wouldn't be able to get them completely accurate and Jagged Fang Designs (its own can of worms) was doing just that. And keep in mind, outside of things that had been extinct for over a couple hundred years, they wanted to remake EVERYTHING in Zoo Tycoon 2 to the same level of quality as the animals. Every building, every fence, every path, the guests, the tanks, every animal food, enrichment item and shelter etcetera etcetera. They had some crazy high ambitions, and in the end they only really scratched the surface. Crazy to think that if they had all been a little more unified, and knew when and where to hold back a bit, they could've remade the games full non-extinct roster of species within half the time they spent getting into unnecessary drama... But, oh well is all I can really say now. Its ultimately just water under the bridge at this point. Hopefully someone comes around to touching up the remaineder of untouched animals so we can finally use them all with this mod active without any looking out of place.

The problem was they started in 2009 as a teen group with high ambitious. Anyone remember simba, the guy was a founder of aurora and he was the reason the lion wasnt done. He as obssesed to do it and nothing, other MMM do it but it was half cooked.

I would then dip out a year or two in development, but of course, my trusty team wouldn't dare touch remaking the rex for years to come, and only would do so 7-8 years after hearing anything from me.

When you mentioned Zeta-Designs I had the Anton Ego Ratatouille moment, god. All of it, the Aurora Designs drama, I remember so well T_T. For lions, i remember there was a mod from a specific website which changed the whole lion model into 70% accurate realistic looking lion model, i think it was from The Round Table website or something.

Sometimes I like playing with the Remaster Skins, but if I haven't played in a while, the original ZT2 Skins just have their own awesome design style. Most of the animals that were not made to be super realistic turned out pretty cool by the ZT2 Devs: Like the Doedicurus and the Elephant Bird are two great examples. Also, nice Eucalyptus albens, also known as the white box at 2:58 lmao

I think the Barbary Lion mod is still the best looking lion mod. I think my biggest gripe is that it made some of the animals looked skinny or smaller

As of 2022 Radical remake had relocated to ztroundtable and became active again. They released the Okapi and were in the early stages of the lion remaster. I don't know if that effort died too since then, I will have a look. But check zt Round table radical remake, aurora designs.

I think if they give The Guests a Anime like Look, That can work for any zoo game, humans in zoo games can always look Odd for looking either too human or too empty, so if they have a Expressional 2D look that Switches moods, that be something.

What's funny is that RR made the tranq gun looking like something out of team fortress 2, at least i always assumed that it was for heavy before I actually got into playing TF2. But the viewmodel doesn't match anything found in the game, so maybe it's from a tf2 mod or from another game entirely

Kind of late, but I recommend the Nano’s Folksy Facelift and Restorers’s Forgotten Animals packs for future ZT2 mods one is a full on overhaul to ZT2 making the game more realistic while keeping the original artstyle, while also adding walkthrough exhibits and more accurate sizes and appearances for the animals especially the extinct ones.(It also adds both Elephant Seals and the Liger to the game as a nice bonus.) The forgotten animals pack’s goal is to add every cut animal from ZT1 into 2 in the games original and it does so perfectly, and when I say every cut animal, I mean it. Stuff like the DS exclusive Koprey and Onger, and the mythical animals like the Bigfoot and Unicorn. The only animals they won’t remake are Magnet (Though his red ball is added as a tribute) and the Mermaid but there’s still a very healthy selection of Animals to have.

I used to only play with Radical Remake & the hyper realistic styled mods for the game. Now ever since a team is making a vanilla styled mod that brings the missing Zoo Tycoon 1 animals in the game, I've been appreciating the cartoony art style Zoo Tycoon 2 had. & I always thought most of the default living animals look good in that style. Plus, the hyper realistic mods always lagged & crashed my game, so there's that as well. lol

oh holy shit. this just popped up into my reccommended list and its like my childhood came knocking on my door with barbed wire/nailed baseball bat and beat me and then knocked me flat on my ass with the nostalgia train im SHAKING. i still get the same vibrating type of excitement seeing this game now as i did back then. every time i forget this game exists, it shows up in my list like its reminding me of the sins ive committed. man, every wednesday my grandmother would pick me up from pre-school and we'd have lunch together and after doing homework i'd spend the WHOLE AFTERNOON playing zoo tycoon 2, feral heart and wolf quest. i will never forget this game. it was everything to me as a kid. i still have all these very random but vivid memories in my head from my childhood all because of its association with this game. its insane.

To give context to why Extinct Animals wasn't fully remade by Auroa Designs: They got into some drama with another modding group called Jagged Fang Designs who are known for working on prehistoric animals. They both had dodo remakes come out on the same day. It was decided that JFD would handle the Extinct Animals expansion pack while Auroa worked on other things. AD where always in tough position of being seen as the only people who could do remakes.

I have to said I saw the beginning and the end of the mod. I think it was too ambitious and the team had many changes in lead and many animals were designed but not released like the lion (thanks to simba that wasnt made and was obssesed with making it), great white shark, pygmy hippo. Other problem for me was the community, a big reason why I left zt2 community in 2011. It was an elistim of things how should be done. If anything was near aurora in look will be punished. Also forums were run by teen with hormones in the heights and people were more focused in internet drama and with mods that werent released. And how things changed, now the remaining zt2 community is making mods with the art style of the original game and the old community moved to planet zoo. In short words: It was too ambitious for a project that needed good leadrship

Leaf ya silly, unaffiliated people made dozens of Lion remasters/remakes, you just didn't download any :v Edit: You should look up the Zoo Tycoon Round table for a nice whelming collection of neat mods and a convenient somewhat active community you can ask for help with stuff; or the Zoo Tycoon 2 Download library if you wanna look up any specific animals you might want. Early warning tho, if you get too many mods (seemingly 300-500 something depending on ur machine) the game will break, but u can fix it again by deleting some if that happen. Specifically, it will ask you if you want to learn how to play all of the expansions one after another, textures will glitch into black squares, and saving won't be possible if this happens.

One correction: you can have as many mods as you want as long as your ZT2 file weight less than 5GB before this game can just crush or corrupt saves.

I remember learning this the hard way with my first laptop, the game corruption also affected my whole laptop as well making it slow and laggy or even crash to the point where it was almost unusable for normal use.

However, now in 2024 we have other remakes that other people made, that work really well in complement with Radical Remake, so you are able to have nearly all animals remastered. EA Remakes for instance remakes 25 more Extinct Animals Shoehorned Dillo's Remakes touches upon the few remaining Endangered Species, Marine Mania and African Adventure animals And for the remaining 10 or so animals (+ the Lion), I simply downloaded either individual remakes some other people made, or I recoded existing mods of said animals into remakes. That way I managed to remake every single base animal from all the expansions

This may sound odd, I am more fond of the cartoonish style, there is a charm to it but I am hunting for one mod as I am not an expert myself thus I am asking for help, one mod I am looking for is specifically towards the extinct research lab, specifically to remove the obnoxious hidden icons, sure I can simply 'memorize' them but regardless, not a fan of it regardless hence I am hunting for a mod that just remove the idea of hidden icons. I found one mod that does way to much like "oh not the lab and the staff do not have an upkeep", just a bit to much.

Never was a fan of texture mods. It just looks out of place in an overall cartoony aesthetic. It may be because I was used to looking at Spore before hand, but I quite like the polygon-esc look to them.
