I said this for a video on one of the videos on a Creationists channel on KZbin. All I got was Yes, you are quite right that carbon dating can't be used for specimens older than 50,000 years. But guess what...IT WILL WORK for samples that (as they assert) are only 4-6000 years old. So why haven't you carbon-dated rocks, if they're only less than 6000 years old?
@christophermonteith27742 ай бұрын
Good question
@amaizenblue442 ай бұрын
I wouldn't ask about carbon dating rocks, however, you can point out that ALL life forms should have tons of carbon remaining if the Earth is only 1 carbon half life old. We should never see, for example, a 20k year old mammoth, a 10k tree ring, 25k organic material in lake sediments (which also match the annual sediment layers). Why do we see ANY organic material with only trace amounts? Where did it all go?
@noone3216Ай бұрын
I'm no expert, but from what I understand, you don't use carbon dating on rocks. I believe carbon dating is only useful for things that were once alive, due to the processes by which the carbon being measured enters the organism. By which I mean, there's a cycle of sorts, where the carbon is absorbed by flora, eaten by fauna (herbi/omnivores) which are eaten by other fauna (carnivores).
@kennethswenson6214Ай бұрын
@@noone3216 From U.C Berkeley Sedimentary rocks can be dated using radioactive carbon, but because carbon decays relatively quickly, this only works for rocks younger than about 50 thousand years. So in order to date most older fossils, scientists look for layers of igneous rock or volcanic ash above and below the fossil.

A point to mention - chemistry (particularly analytical chemistry, where I spent 20 years) does not deal in "zeros" and "nones". Experimentation and statistical assessments of control samples give Limits of Detection and Limits of Quantification. One cannot say "There is zero Uranium in this sample" because even a single U atom would falsify the statement. Instead, based on the instrumentation, one can only say "there is LESS THAN 20 parts-per-trillion (ppt) Uranium in this sample" with any confidence, if the instrumentation has been demonstrated to be accurate to that degree (given demonstrated repeatability, noise levels, and other quality control measures) A detection limit may be in %, parts per million, billion, trillion, quadrillion in some cases. But a lab CANNOT and will not say "zero" for an elemental concentration. "None detected" is the closest, but it's a literally truthful statement that inevitably refers back to how little of an analyte the instrument can reliably quantify.

The funniest and telling thing creationists always say that Noah only took the babies as if any animal that isn’t like a turtle or most species of insects is totally ok with a weird bearded man taking their kids, and saying babies don’t require much care or feeding. With those who have taken care of human children and baby pets they require serious care and attention, and we wouldn’t have a Noah’s Ark story if Noah was gored or turned into a blood stain on the ground from animals that are a lot more protective with their kids than a turtle.

The radiometric dating process is to measure the half-life of the Carbon-14 that was present in the organism, but the system isn't completely isolated and it's a darn good thing. If every organism that was buried on earth locked in all of their Carbon-14 atoms, wouldn't that have a significant impact on the amount of elemental Carbon within our environment?

I'm getting fond memories of Potholer54's "The Miller's Tayle"! "Oi! Miller! We can't carbon date that! There's no beeeeeeep carbon in it! " For anyone who has never seen this gem: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4GooaqhjcanmLs

Carbon dating anything older than a few thousand years old is worse than weighing a glass of water with a ruler, since math can get you close on the water.

I question from this to dutko would be this. 'Now I am not a paleontologist, or for that matter what would be considered even a rank amateur. It would seem to me that the Velociraptor, or the Tyrannosaurus, even at a young age would be a danger. Being these two Dinosaurs were and are considered almost perfect killing creatures. Just how did the other creatures and the humans survive?' Otherwise I would put as much faith in his knowledge of the Sciences in the same category of a politician telling the truth. Peace

So we could prank future creationists by burying everything in chalk or limestone?

As the C14 in dinos trope comes up in Vol 2 of Rocks Were there, Jackson Wheat & I will allude to thise video at that point: Bert Thompson & Brad Harrub 2017c went especially Golden Oldie, still relying on Dahmer et al.’s 1990 piece in the current revamp of their 2003 creationist Lesson Plan, while the recent epic six-hour creationist seminar “Evolution Exposed” couldn’t resist repeating it, which Dapper Dino dissected when he joined our coauthor JW for the Paulogia et al. 2021 video analysis. And we’ll toss in Jonathan Baker and Philip Senter similarly evaluating the misrepresented science in a recent creationism lecture by Bob Dutko (“Michigan’s #1 Christian Radio Show Host” available to discourse on such things for $600 and up, according to his website), Aron Ra et al. 2024.
