Hi and congratulations. On the matter of a contemporary White Star ship displaying the famous buff colour, perhaps the tender Nomadic might present some clues. Lots of colour pictures there. Possibly writing to the Belfast Titanic museum for a possible recipe from 1912. I did see that one whistle was salvaged, repaired and to great acclaim, operated at reduced pressure outdoors in the USA. There is a KZbin clip. Apparently not be done again due to its fragile nature.

I think you've done a phenomenal job of making this version of White Star Buff as a color. It contrasts the ship particularly well, and the funnels now compliment the rest of her paint scheme well

With the funnel colors I went through my own experiments with Tamiya, Humbrol, Mr Hobby, and Vallejo Model Color and Vallejo Air line of paints and finally came to my preferred color which is Vallejo's Game Air Elf Skintone which I didn't need to do any mixing after my misfires and getting my airbrush all clunked up with enamel paints hahahaha. The Elf Skintone is really close to your color mix actually which is surprising. Just like you mentioned, once you add the varnish, it gains that same darker shade and they nicely pop. Happy with the results that I got. Glad your happy with urs.
@TheModelBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
Aaah yes I have a pot of Elf Skin Tone myself, and yeah you are correct it’s very very close. Glad you found a good colour too, it’s a long process isn’t it!

@@TheModelBoatGuy Tell me about it lmao! It was a close to three-month process since I was getting some paints imported from overseas since I'm in the US to test out. But some of those paints I wasn't so keen on, then someone recommended me the Vallejo line of paints, and had my misfires there also until I came across the Elf skintone. I thought, I finally found my holy grail.

Looking good. Congrats on following through with your color choice for the funnels. When you showed the three prototypes you painted up, the one you choose was my least favorite of the three, but seeing them done, it looks FANTASTIC.

Hi there, yes I did see the Nomadic a few years back before the renovation was finished. The issue of course with going off colours on her is that she’s freshly painted, so whatever colour they chose is probably as a result of the research titanic modeller’s have done. I am pretty happy with my colour now, and glad the decisions made and done! You could spend the rest of your life trying to work out the colour 😛

White Star buff, probably one of the most discussed colours in the model world (along with any WW1 aircraft colours!) I really like your final choice with the varnish. I found a page on the web with a formula for all the Titanic colours and when I did my 1/400 I tried mixing as close to the information on that page and didn’t like it, I couldn’t find all the colours so it may have been slightly off. In the end i went with something very close to your colour which I felt was more pleasing to the eye. Happy to share the webpage link if you want it.

White star buff was more salmon color. I know because my grandad built the titanic and he took a color picture of them using the prototype camera his mate invented and we have it in the family album and everybody's models are wrong
@TheModelBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, as you say it’s about the most debated colour topic in titanic modelling. It’s a very obscure thing WSB, but you sort of arrive at a colour that seems good and that’s that. If you could share that website that would be grand!
@marcush22202 жыл бұрын
Did see a program about Titanics whistle a time back, but they did recover a whistle and made it work again, so maby there is on the tube about this. But if you find that program you can hear Titanic sound. Ps , the funnels looks 👌👏

Yes I saw that, I think they sounded it at Southampton on the 100th anniversary of Titanics maiden voyage, quite poignant. Interesting documentary for sure. Thanks for your words on the funnels!

Was wondering if you could somehow do a special video on setting up the spray gun from start to finish, how much thinner do you use if any and the clean up process I've been doing models for over 40 years but never used a spray gun, I always used a brush so I'm new at spray guns, also I did order paints from scale colors I don't know if they are still in business or not but from what I understand they got ALL the colors from the old Olympic and Titanic formulas and came up with what they beleave is as close to the original colors as possible, but your right it's still not 100% accurate, but again could you do a spray gun video I would appreciate the help in this matter.

I usually go with the Shaw-Savill funnel colours as a guide for what the TITANIC's funnel colour would have been, since I believe they were very similar
@TheModelBoatGuy Жыл бұрын
Ah im not familiar with those. Just had a look and yeah they look very similar to what i've ended up with.

In my opinion the colour you said was too light looked just right on camera, and then you showed what the funnels looked like with the varnish in the slightly darker colour and it just looked perfect somehow lol. Just shows how much a varnish and the contrast from all the colours makes it change so much
@TheModelBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
It’s a very strange process. I must have looked at 5 very similar shades and thought they all looked quite a way off, then suddenly one just stood out as being spot on. Natural light also really skews the colours on these things! So she may well look a bit different on the water

The completed funnel at 6:54 has a very yellow-ish colour in that moment, then gains a pink-ish hue at 7:20 as you move closer to it. I’ve seen similar things with other buff colours, seemingly changing shades depending on the slightest of lighting differences. The same colour could by yellow one moment, pink the next, orange still the next, etc., and it makes it a nightmare to actually study. White Star Buff is so freaking weird.
@TheModelBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
It is a really hard colour to pin down. I think because it is relatively light it appears very changeable to the ambient light around it. My funnels look very different in natural light to how they appear in electric lit rooms

Any wondering why you didn’t use the method using the Woody’s upgrades?
@TheModelBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
It was the pipe work that swung it. I think for rivet details woodies is better than china 3D. But the pipe working on the china 3D funnels is stunning, and gets to the details of bolts etc. But it was a close run thing to be sure!
