The satellite and shortwave service continued until midnight on 30 December 1992. The closedown night was relayed on various stations, including the old 208 wavelength. The Van Morrison song was the next-to-last record that night, followed by Marion Montgomery's "Maybe the morning".

Probably the saddest words that were said on Radio Luxembourg by Mike Hollies himself 30.12.1992, where Radio Luxembourg switched off after 70 years of broadcasting starting from 1933 - and ending in 30 - 12 - 1992, for me Radio Luxembourg still lives and forever, I listening to all the material I have from all time from start to finish every day , Thank for the time , Love forever , ❤ ❤ ❤

What a sad moment !!! Radio Luxembourg, that was the most beautiful time of my life. The nights spent with Bob Stewart, with Tony Prince, with Dave Christian , with Kid Jensen , Peter Powell , Stuart Henry and Mark Wesley, with Mike Hollis and Benny Brown, those were some of the most beautiful moments of my youth in R. of Macedonia, as part of Yugoslavia. Radio Luxembourg will live in my heart forever.

Classy goodbye from one of the most important radio stations in the history of broadcasting and one of the most influential rock and roll stations in all of Europe, with a night signal so powerful it blanketed the UK and got behind the Iron Curtain.

I recorded the whole last night of Radio Luxembourg on TDK D90 cassettes (remember them). As a child Radio Luxembourg fascinated me because of where it came from. Everyone in Europe could be listening, not just in Britain! Sadly though UK commercial radio played Radio Luxembourg at its own game and with FM reception and stable Medium Wave with NO fading it was only a matter of time before people listened to UK ILR instead and also BBC Radio 1 which had started moving over from Medium Wave to FM a few years previous. The final nail in Radio Luxembourg's coffin was the previous year to this recording when the station dropped its night time Medium Wave service to concentrate on Satellite and Short Wave, not everyone had satellite TV and so the station lost a lot of its hardcore audience. Its sister station Atlantic 252 only lasted another 9 years before closing down too. Had the internet been then (in December 1992) what it is today then maybe Radio Luxembourg would have survived because there are stations that broadcast exclusively online, so it is commercially viable for online only radio. I think though that the closure of daily Medium Wave broadcasts the year before not only lost the station the bulk of its audience but took the magic, the heart, spirit, uniqueness, that certain something that Radio Luxembourg had with its listeners away and it became just another pop station but one you HAD to put the telly on for instead of turning on your radio and listening to your local ILR FM pop station. Luxembourg will always have a place in my heart as it is fondly remembered but it is in the past and for its memory it should remain their. RIP and thanks for making me happy as a kid Radio Luxembourg. I felt part of a special club and as Mike Hollis says, you will ALWAYS live on in my fondest memories.

+Up The BORO I agree not only what you said about internet radio, but also with the beauty of Radio Luxembourg. It was a great station, but until today, I didn't know about how historic it was. May Radio Luxembourg not only live on forever in your fondest memories, but also forever in all the hearts of the expatriates from the United Kingdom, and away from home, and forever in your heart.

I did not realize that this radio station is no more. I listened to it in the war year 1944 after Luxemburg was liberated by the US Army. This was of course at a great risk for our lives in germany. I remember one night we listened to it and the power went out. I turned it off and went to bed. well during the night the power came back and a loud voice announced "This is Radio free Luxemburg a voice of the free world... I jumped out of the bed - so did my mom - and raced to he kitchen pulling the the power off. Then we waited with our hearts beating to hesr if any one else in our apartment house might have heard it. If any body had heard and reported it to the Nazi officials we would have been arrested and who knows what else. But it seemed that no one heard or at least didn't say any thing ... until about a month later we had an Official come in and walked to radio and put a red notice on the radio reminding us that listening to a foreign station was forbidden and jail or even death could be the consequences. We thought that perhaps everyone had gotten this warning but later realized that we had been the only one. I am no 90 years old but will never forget this experience.

Radio Luxembourg was the soundtrack to my life growing up in the 1970s. Great DJs and great music, many of the records literally ignored by other stations. Loved some of those adverts as well, Barclays Bank, Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes, Goya AquaManda by Christopher Collins, John Temple menswear, Pepsi, Propa PH, many of them turned up in Fabulous 208 Magazine. As Barry Alldis said, whether at home or on the highway, thanks for tuning my way. I've even got hold of some of the many albums that were featured as the 208 Album of the Week, including 20 United Stars of America & 208 Atlantic Black Gold, thanks to a great friend I have named Claire who runs a local retro record centre. It truly was the Great 208.

With EU green laws limiting MW transmitters to 10kw in some places, but 5kw in most zone 1 & 2 states, and the 1440 transmitter site disassembled... there's no chance of an english RTL now. Try the MW dial tonight after dark... compared with 30 years ago it's practically dead.

I cried when this played at the closedown, how could the CLT get rid of the world's, the UK's and Europe's favourite commercial radio station with a pedigree a quality and a level of service that no other station could deliver match or even come close to? Astra satellite coverage reaches millions of listeners across Europe with direct to home Astra satellite systems and those in the UK with Sky Television subscriptions in perfect stereo sound quality and with constant fade free reception and if CLT pulled their finger out, they could have got more cable TV networks across Europe and in the UK to carry Radio Luxembourg in stereo on their FM programme service from the Astra 1A satellite, perhaps this would have helped? I would have advertised Radio Luxembourg on RTL's television services and undertook a big UK TV advertising campaign on ITV here that would have also raised the profile of Radio Luxembourg massively and this would have easily have got it more noticed in the UK and Europe.

I grew up with radio Luxembourg as a kid with a radio my sister bought me for Christmas. There was a song played at the end of broadcast by one of the DJ's when he finished that someone had written and recorded about him. I'm pretty sure it was Start Henry. I can remember all the lyrics and the tune and can sing it like it was but never got a recording. I'd love to hear the original again if possible. Maybe someone here remembers it and knows who wrote and performed it and if it's available anywhere? Who said it's a long and lonely road we travel on Don't know where we're going or where we're coming from. My life's been a journey you've helped me see it through Nothing seems a problem just being next to you Another day is breaking so we can laugh in time There's something there between us words can not define Holding onto something i never want to lose You'd always be that something i would choose... I think i know myself by now I'd say that i know you care I give you love and some rock'n'roll To all of you out there, To all of you out there.......

It was a shame but a satellite and shortwave delivered Radio Luxembourg was losing money, and the problem with medium wave 208 metres / 1440 kHz was the night-time fade problem, and that platform cost a lot to run : half a million UK pounds transmitter hire and a colossal power bill to run that massive 1200 kW 1440 kHz AM powerhouse at Marnarch, Northern Luxembourg.

I hate the Compagniè Luxembourgeois Dè Tèlèdiffusionè (CLT) who got rid of Radio Luxembourg. They could've explored other avenues i.e. hiring out airtime to outside bodies on 15350 kHz SW, broadcasting 24:7 on 49.26 metres Shortwave as well as the Astra 1A satellite, broadcasting paid-for programmes that bring in extra revenue for the station such as religion, selling Pan-European advertising to European countries within Astra 1A's footprint at very attractive rates and having European language adverts in addition to English adverts for the UK, less Music Jam and pre-recorded music segments with more live shows and a return of sponsored programmes Maxell, TDK, Panasonic, Sony, Bang & Olufsen, All Clear Shampoo, Mars Chocolate etc. I'd also would've marketed the station better to cable tv systems, satellite rebroadcasters, partner FM stations, in reach of the Astra 1A Satellite with information packs and a 30 minute HiFi Stereo VHS cassette about Radio Luxembourg, it's rich history, and showing what you need to receive Radio Luxembourg English Service on satellite and details on tuning it in too.

@roger darthwell problem is CLT are a bunch of bankers and business people whose interests aren't in broadcasting but are shareholders and owners of RTL's radio services and they moved in replacing RTL management turning the spotlight on the radio stations to see how much money and profits they were making and they saw Radio Luxembourg English Service on the Astra 1A satellite across the UK and Europe and via North American Shortwave on 15350 kHz as unviable and made the decision September 1992 to close it. They had no idea how many people were listening to the stereo service via Astra 1A in the UK and across Europe and they had no idea how many were listening to the service via CATV networks across continental Europe and in the UK and that's what they were questioning. If I was station manager I would have better promoted the Radio Luxembourg English service via a series of TV ads on Astra's TV channels and on UK TV services ie itv and channel 4 and made a better effort of marketing the station to CATV operators in Europe and the UK with an explanatory 15 minute hifi stereo VHS cassette about Radio Luxembourg and how to carry it on cable TV from the Astra Satellite giving frequency, polarisation and audio subcarrier details and promotional bumph to encourage them to carry the service That would have been far better to me than a lonely solitary ad and reply coupon in a broadcast trade magazine plus the TV ads would get Radio Luxembourg far more noticed visually and inform the satellite TV viewers on Astra and in the UK of its presence on satellite.

@@domwigley62 a) it doesn't make money for them, b) if it did come back then what format should it be, and c) what broadcast platform should it use? Time has passed it by too, when it closed on the Astra 1A satellite in Wegener 🐼 1 stereo, 15350 kHz Shortwave plus 1440 kHz MW 30th December 1992, I along with millions of people in the UK and all across Europe were gutted at the death of Radio Luxembourg but equally the station was losing money, and if a radio station is losing money, it doesn't make sense to continue, also, how many people were ACTUALLY listening to Radio Luxembourg on their Astra Satellite dish systems? That take up couldn't really be measured, so although satellite distribution direct to hone via individual Astra satellite dishes was good, the listening figures sadly weren't really enough to make it viable. If CLT had stuck it out thru 1993 and upped the awareness with TV ads on free to air Astra satellite channels and pay TV Astra satellite subscription services, then perhaps more people would know it is there and available and would probably tune in but CLT wouldn't surmount such a campaign to promote Luxy.

"It was a travesty for CLT to closedown the Radio Luxembourg English Service end of 1992. Whats wrong with astra satellite delivery? It reaches millions of european satellite homes in perfect stereo quality and serves some cable homes on cableoperators offering to take it and transmit it subscribers." They certainly weren't losing money there I'm sure. It does come off a tad shortsightedness.

+Christopher Sobieniak They should have stuck it out another year. They would have increased their audience via Astra satellite in the UK with large numbers of people subscribing to SKY, mainly for Premier League football

Radio Luxembourg on satellite was a good quality platform and it reached millions of Astra satellite dish owners across the European continent as well as the UK. If CLT had stuck it out through 1993 and continued, it would have become more noticed indeed as more and more people were purchasing Astra Satellite Systems and Sky Sports subscriptions in the UK for Premiere League Football which would have increased listenership.

With the last song played on radio Luxemburg they should have had a vote from the listeners to choose their all time classic pop song instead Luxembourg went off the air waves with a pathetic wimp of a song what a disappointing end to an iconic radio station.
