I became an Army Radio/Teletype Operator in 1988. Until now I have not been able to find any videos to show people when I tell them it took about a hundred clicks, turns, toggles and pushes of knobs, switches and buttons before you could say a word.

The majority of TTYs used baudot code, as that was what they started with, and they kept it to avoid making older models redundant.

Teletypes of that era used a 5 character Baudot code which consisted of Mark and Space. Mark being the presence of signal and Space being the absence of signal. With the introduction of computer interface teletypes were equipped to communicate in ASCII.
