I love that I can take a break from ASOIAF, come back several years later, and Radio Westeros is still producing some of the highest quality fan videos around. Cheers to Lady Gwyn, Yolkboy, and the dozens of hours I am about to spend watching their content.

Delightful! It’s so great to settle down with a cup of coffee and an episode of Radio Westeros. “Make my day.” And you did! Thanks for all the ASOIAF content through the years. I go back and re-listen/re-watch often, the way I do with favorite books. You two are a veritable, digital Cozy Corner. 😊🥰👍🥂

This is my favorite radio ever! Thank You! Funny how Nettie tamed Sheepstealer with sheep. One can almost see how Valerian sheepherders tamed their first wild dragons ;) Maybe at first, the blood had nothing to do with it, and later blood magic helped dragons to recognize the Vallyrians as those sheepherders.

Radio Westeros is so insightful. Little wonder that GRRM who planted seeds has such a hard time tending his mammoth garden. Much and more in his garden is being left untended. It is interesting that in HOT D reveals that George keeps changing his mind, Aegon the conqueror foresaw the next long night and passed this message along...umm.. not very well.

2:02:55 you guys say Viserys II's egg is never mentioned again. It was brought up again in F&B after Baela and Alyn's infant daughter Laena was attacked by her hatchling. Aegon III then ordered all remaining eggs in the Red Keep to be sent to Dragonstone, a move that angered Viserys who didn't want to part with his still-unhatched egg, leading to a long quarrel between the brothers. Anyway, this episode was a ton of fun to listen to and it was great to get a normal scripted episode from you guys again! Can you guys do a quiz episode follow-up to this one about dragons?? I love the quizzes!

41:00 This is the list I needed. In chronological order the stillborn dragon babies are (1) Unnamed Son of Daemon and Laena (2) Visenya daughter of Daemon and Rhaenyra (3) Rhaego son of Drogo and Daenerys. In Rhaego's situation, he's alive and was kidnapped by the Dothraki for safekeeping as the Stallion Who Mounts the World. In his case, the dragon descriptions are provided by Mirri to sell the lie that he was stillborn by appealing to the Targaryen ego. She describes a dragon without using the word dragon so that Dany puts the pieces together herself and better believes it therefore. _Such is the price of having the blood of the dragon [of being so awesome.]_ My hunch is that 'secretly kidnapped at birth Targaryen baby' maps on to all the other stillborn dragon babies in the series, too. Like Dany, Rhaenyra was apparently unconscious after the birth, being unable to give the baby a name until "the next day, when milk of the poppy had blunted the edge of her pain." In Visenya's case, Mushroom is a mirror of Jorah because he occupies Jorah's role in the Rhaego case, the role being the pretend disposer of the body.

Since I watched the video by Crowfood's Daughter of the Disputed Lands about the origin of dragons, I've been so intrigued by the concept that Valyrians were able to genetically engineer them, and also somehow splice their DNAs so they are literally blood of the dragon. It sounds way too sciencey and advanced, but I guess we can handwave it with "blood magic." But the thing is, dragons ended up being able to reproduce successfully, like a stable animal population. I wonder how. Even HOTD has not tried to show us what dragon reproduction actually looks like. Only that certain dragons lay eggs. We don't even know if it's sexual reproduction, and it's weird to me that they're not interested in following dragon lineages or in active breeding.

14:55 look up the moon meteor theory by Lucifer Means Lightbringer. That story doesn’t actually tell the origin of dragons, but does tell the origins of the long night. A wacky premise at first, but it connects to much more in the story and my understanding of the story hasn’t been the same since I listened to his theory

I know you weren’t really covering HOTD lore in this, but I’d still be interested in views on the command ‘dracarys’. In the main series, Dany clearly thinks she’s made it up: “I wanted to choose a command that no one was like to utter by chance”. Do you think she just stumbled on the historically used command (it does kinda make sense)?
@RadioWesteros
@RadioWesteros Жыл бұрын
Good point, I suppose the in universe explanation would be that she made a common sense choice that happened to align with historical reality. Although I do think that’s the most likely explanation, it’s worth noting that sometimes Dany does seem to have more knowledge about dragons and Targaryen history than you might expect, Viserys obviously did not fully neglect her education on that score.
@paulbarry3400
@paulbarry3400 Жыл бұрын
Interesting; yes, that’s true. He may at least have known that dragons seem to understand Valyrian, and shared that with her. I was thinking of a similar case that relates to why Arrax spitting flame at Vhagar is entirely consistent with dragon lore. Dany notes: “for a dragon’s first instinct is always to attack.” Not sure how she knew that with such certainty but HOTD seems to have picked it up.

@@paulbarry3400 I don't mean to trash talk about the House of the Dragon, the show thus far is great. But dracarys is a bit of a fan servicing, in my opinion. I doubt there is much sense behind it :)

Thank you for referring to the targ dragons as domesticated. I keep seeing people say that they aren't, especially in the context of "can someone own vhagar", and it's not correct. Especially, as you pointed out, in contrast to cannibal who very well might be the wild type. If they are a magical creation of the valyrians, then they're all domesticated. That aside, I think there's a ton of eggs and unnamed hatchlings that we're not told about. Because whilst the dragons and their relationship with sex and reproduction isn't really known, we do know that the maesters only refer to a dragon as "she" after they are observed laying eggs. Given that roughly half the dragons are referred to as "she", that's a lot of undescribed eggs. Like Meleys and Tessarion. Both are she-dragons, but none of their eggs or offspring are described.
