I gotta be honest, when Iri and Jiqui follow up a statement with the phrase "It is known" ... 90% of the time I trust what they're saying is correct. They're just so convincing

I'm certain I'll enjoy it, Essos is my favorite part of GRRM's world. I'm especially fascinated with far east Asshai/Great Empire myths & legends, hope you guys do a stand alone episode on it one day. Will definitely be joining the Paetreon campaign as soon as it's within my financial capability.

meagan testerman Yeah, it's definitely the most intriguing part of GRRM'S world, unfortunately I don't think he'll ever release more than is absolutely necessary to finish the main series. He already said we'll only ever see it in visions or flashbacks. I think thats part of the reason he brought Mel in as a pov, shes the only pov thats actually been there🙁 If only we could get some info on places like K'Dath & The City of The Winged-Men too, other than the few paragraphs in The World of Ice & Fire. A man can dream..... of spring😂

This is my second playthrough listening to myths and legends of the east and all I can say is wow. You guys really know how to collect all the information from the books, no matter how obscure, and beautifully weave an entire episode out of material that a more casual reader may unknowingly dismiss. Awesome episode guys. Have you guys read Blue Eyed Wolf's essay on the secret identities of Ser Shadrich, Ser Byron, and Ser Morgarth? It's an extremely compelling theory. Anywat, I was wondering if you ever thought about doing an episode on secret identities in ASOIAF? I think that could be a very entertaining episode.

Thanks for the kind words... and yeah we thought about a 'mysterious characters' episode one day! Glad you like the podcast ;)

This is a really interesting idea for an episode. I think the mythology of the east in Planetos hits that sweet spot in that it’s super detailed yet incredibly vague and open to interpretation. It’s all just very rich for speculation .

As to the dilemma of sacrificing one person to save the world, it reminds me of The Cabin in the Woods, a hilariously self-ironic horror movie I like way too much. I won't spoil the end but it's my favorite answer to that pickle 😁

So all these nations left essos for westeros, to escape rhe rule of the valerians, just for westeros to b eventually ruled by valerians.

Another comparison to Garin the Great call to arms of over 250,000 fighters to resist the Valyrian freehold comes to mind the legend of Lo Bu the 43rd scarlet emperor assembling a host of over 300,000 men to fight and end the Jogos Nhai... As well as the other comparisons mentioned this to ended in a sad ending for Lo Bu and his army. Thoughts?

Nice work. It's hard to find people with a flexible enough mind to imagine some of the different layers in his world's history. People cling very closely to accepting the current state of the myths and legends. But for a moment allow me to reframe some of this. First I'm convinced GRRM has included a gender based shift that resembles our own. In our world the oldest religions tend to make the sun a female fertility symbol, and the moon a male symbol. Over time patriarchal cultures shift these so that the larger brighter sun represents their power as males and moon a quieter demure female symbol. Consider the last hero legend from this reversed perspective. The maiden of light as the sun and the moon as the lion of the night. So, 30 days, sword is quenched in water. Repeat, sword is quenched in a lion. Repeat, sword is quenched in his wife. Now, what if the sword is a comet. The comet first hits the sea. Another comet hits the moon (lion). And last a third comet hits the sun. First, where does the lion of night come from. The East. What colour are lions on the grass sea? They are white not gold. If the lion of night was a white lion he would match the moon rather than the sun. Or carved of ebony rather than a yellow or white material, is there or was there a black moon and perhaps somewhere in the east a black lion? At the end if the day, the legend and gods are from the east. Lions are only yellow in West. In an eastern context it makes more sense for a white lion of the night to match a white moon.

Would we have the priests of Rhllor to resurrect this person that we would sacrifice?

It has just occurred to me that Rhaegar Targaryen was killed near water, Aerys Targaryen was killed by a lion, the only thing I can't say is that Rhaella Targaryen was killed by love. Well, not unless Aerys wasn't Dany's father.

I don't like spamming comment sections with unrelated things, that's rude and immature. But for the love of everything good in this world: everybody go watch BTS new single "Fake Love" (the MV is in "ibighit" KZbin channel) and listen to their new album "Love Yourself: Tear"! It's really worth your time to at least give them a chance, I promise. Dammit, I'm so excited! They're having their Comeback show at BBMAs, you all, wonderful humans! I'm so sorry, I NEED to share my excitement with... People. Everyone. P.S: I really love your show and I am going to listen to it later when I have more free time because I'm studying now. Maybe during dinner.

Oh and to answer the question you ask at 50:00 (ish). I thought about this a long time, a long time ago, and came to my answer then and it has remained the same answer I will give now. I would ask the person I love most what they would have me do and I would do that, but know that if they asked me to spare them and let the world suffer what ever fate their death might have avoided, I might likely do that as well. Does that make me a terrible human? Maybe more than a little, but the probability of such a fantastical absurdly ridiculous event that is only knowingly solvable by that single action I don't think I can know for any real certainty. So "hypothetical" answer : I'd ask. "Real" event situation answer : ....honestly unknowable, contrary to the slew of smart ass and sarcastic answers popping into my head as I ponder the question.
