I am one of those Ham radio operators. I got my FCC license when I was a teenager 45 years ago. It's my lifelong hobby and have talked to people in every country in the world. I have always had to contend with neighbors who are horrified by the sight of an antenna and they were sure I was the cause of any and all electrical problems and TV interference even if I wasn't at home. Most of my homes had HOA restrictions about antennas so I had to camouflage my antennas or erect them after dark. It seems to me that the nightmare in Martin's neighborhood are his neighbors. Martin isn't making any noise or hurting anyone, but his neighbors are hurting him.

The woman doing the complaining after the fact that the ham got permission for the antenna and Ofcom cleared him of any operating issues, is indeed a nightmare neighbor. I can understand someone having a hard time being polite to this idiot. Being elderly is far more likely to be the cause of the health problems than that ham station.

Seven cancer patients around where his mast is! That may be true but they have absolutely nothing to do with his mast. We had a woman nearby complaining that a newly errected nearby cellphone mast was causing her skin to turn silver. She was very vocal about it and it even appeared in the local paper. It all stopped when the cellphone company disclosed that they hadn't yet turned on the site!.

I had a neighbor call me on the phone once and tell me my radio was whipping out his TV reception and my radio wasn't even on at the time. He didn't believe me so I invited him over. I called his wife while he was here and ask her if the interference was still happening and she said it was, but he could plainly see my radio wasn't even on. We later found out the guy that installed his satellite equipment had not made good connections to it with the coax I repaired the connection for him and he apologized to me.

Canadian commenting. In Canada Ham Radio is an overall part of emergency communications in a vast country located on a huge continent. The busybody women in this story would find they do not have the right to intimidate this person who holds a legitimate license. In my neighborhood one person soon found out that federal law, protecting the rights of Ham Radio Operators, supersedes both municipal and provincial laws and covenants. Federal law, in Canada, eclipses all local laws when it comes to the contributions of these radio operators. As far as the beauty, or lack of beauty, of antennas it is a case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder! On the Atlantic Coast of North America we are subject to a tropical storm season. Five G Phone Coverage is great when it is working and the towers are upright, at times we need our good old fashioned AM Radio towers, so well fastened in place, and the presence of Ham Radio Operators in our communities. In summation Ham Radio makes me feel much safer from August to the end of October. It is worth so much more than little gardens and sight lines!
@rodclark44854 ай бұрын
Very well said, Mary refuse. You live in a wonderful area of canada, I live in Ontario but have visited the East Coast many many times in my 70s and years I am also an amateur radio operator and we don't have any protection to guarantee that we can have an antenna in an apartment. I briefly had a 25-foot fishing pole antenna on my top floor balcony but the landlord quickly ordered me to take it down. Somehow he permits satellite dishes even though they are totally unnecessary
@daveblackford60972 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised no one has come up with an HOA community for hams, and amateur astronomers. I can just see the shared antenna towers, the neighbors actually have understanding how RF. interference, and light trespass actually do work, and being more interested in their neighbor's contacts, than getting them shut down.

Why would Rose care if Martin dug up his own garden or trimmed another neighbor's tree? It's also interesting that the mast is retractable, meaning it probably wasn't even up all the time. It looked cool anyway. Carol seems like a stereotypical busybody. Apparently, she just decided Martin was bad and so made it her personal mission to turn the community against him and get the antenna taken down, even though it didn't actually affect her at all, or really anyone else for that matter. When one thing didn't work, she would just make up something else. First there was the claim of interference, but the authorities found none, so it was onto the cancer story. I'm inclined to believe Martin's account because he straight up admitted that he told Carol "put your nose on your bum and smell it" (lol, good for him). He didn't squirm around trying to look angelic like those women did.

This is hilarious. I'm in my 30s and just got my ham license not long ago. I never want to live in a place like this. I have my own property and home and have installed an EFHW antenna. I think people just like to complain. These folks need a hobby instead of attacking their new neighbor. He has operated ham radio for about 50 years and somehow within 1 year of moving into the community people around him start getting cancer? Wow. I wonder if they would have got cancer without the big antenna. "My TV don't work" okay, more than likely it's going to be Sister Sally's microwave from 1980 causing the interference versus an experienced ham operator using fully tuned, resonant antennas.

In the CRT television sets, there was a crystal which controlled the colors displayed on the screen. This was called the color burst crystal and it's resonant frequency was around 3.5 MHz. This frequency is also within the amateur radio frequency group known as the 80 meter band. So, when transmitting on the 80m band, TV displays would be disrupted by the radio signals. This problem was resolved DECADES ago, so for someone to make this claim is either lying or is using an antique TV. Since old CRT TV's cannot receive modern broadcasts without modification or additional external equipment, the complainers are lying. A cluster of terminal cancer cases, in a retirement community? What? Does Martin have cancer from doing this for over 30 years? Well then, get rid of your microwaves because the frequency uses is the resonant frequency of water, an abundant substance in a human body.

I'm a ham myself, I think his antenna is nice but a little overkill in a small retirement village, wire antennas which are virtually invisible can do a pretty good job and not upset the nosy neighbours. I can get out all over the world on 14Mhz on just an end-fed half wave. No need for such a massive yagi antenna. Ham radio does not interfere with modern digital TV sets. I think the neighbours are full of it to be honest.

The woman doesn't have to stand and look up at it every day but the other side of it is I live in the country and make do with an EFHW 49:1 wire antenna and it serves me very well, If I can hear them I can work them, a tower would be nice but it's true too that he might not be able to erect a 134 foot long antenna in the space he has, mine is mounted in a kid of sloping inverted L. I can't make my own tower so the cost of this + beam antenna is not justifiable for me. When not using the radio the antenna is connected to my Kiwi SDR.

Firstly I must declare I am a Ham radio operator. I sigh at video’s like this give us all a bad name, however there is always two side to the storey. The ham operator would need Planning Permission for this antenna and I,100% guarantee, it would not have been granted. An antenna of that type is totally inappropriate in this location. There are alternatives that could be used that would have no impact on the neighbours, but the operator would have to accept a small compromise in performance. With regard to Cancer this is a total load of rubbish they are no risks if the operator follows the licenced regulations. You are at more risk when using your mobile phone !! and that is small !! Interference to TV’s again if the radios are installed to regulations and it sounds from the Ofcom visit, they are, there would be no problems. Remember also if there was a problem it would only occur on transmission not at any other time so it can be easily monitored.
